ICOM and the West African Museums Programme (WAMP) have published a Directory of Museum Professionals in Africa in 1993. While this concentrates on museum staff and their professional expertise, it also includes details of many of the museums in Africa. A new edition of this guide is currently under development. South Africa is said to be the most beautiful country in the world. It at least is the most beautiful place in Africa. Since the fall of Apartheid in 1994, more visitors than ever are discovering her changing and breathtaking scenery, historic Cape Dutch vineyards or fantastic beaches where surfing is probably the most popular pastime. Like the skies, your options are endless - from tracking lions in the great grasslands or sampling a taste of traditional African life to the awe inspiring Rift Valley or the dramatic Drakensberg Mountains

SWAZILAND: New radio drama spreads AIDS awareness
[ This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]
IRIN/James Hall AIDS radio drama producer Ntombiyembuso Tfwala MBABANE, 11 Aug 2004 (IRIN/ PLUSNEWS ) - A new radio drama aimed at transforming Swazis' knowledge of AIDS into a change in personal behaviour began broadcasting this week.
"The show's purpose is to give information, but I think it is fundamentally different from other attempts at AIDS communication in Swaziland during the past 15 years," said Alan Brody, UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) country representative, who is sponsoring the drama.
"The information is now out there - people know all about AIDS - but this knowledge hasn't changed behaviour. We aim to do that," Brody told IRIN.
Entitled 'Even Now There is Still Hope', the 15-minute drama, followed by a 15-minute panel discussion, will be broadcast twice weekly on public radio's SiSwati language station. "The programme is based on a theatrical presentation, that was itself based on a health motivator lecture, which was very successful in showing how HIV is spread from one individual to another until an entire community is at risk," said the programme's producer, Ntombiyembuso Tfwala.

Exploring Contemporary Africa: Lessons on South Africa
In July of 2001, fifteen teachers from across the Pacific Northwest traveled to South Africa and Swaziland as part of a Fulbright Study Abroad Program to study the cultures and societies of southern Africa. Their mission was to gather first-hand information and resources for teaching about contemporary, post-apartheid southern Africa in the classroom. Based on their travels, the group produced a collection of lesson plans and resources adaptable to a broad range of classroom subjects and grade levels. Exploring Contemporary Africa contains personal stories, interviews and anecdotes on life in post-apartheid southern Africa, focusing on economics, education, government and society. Swaziland
This past weekend I left South Africa. I just needed a little break from the country…so I went to Swaziland! I rented a little WV Golf Chico with my sister and two other friends. It was great to learn how to drive on the other side the road. I think I only gave them a couple scares when drifting off into the ditch. It was really fun. We arrived at a friend’s house on Friday night – after spending almost an hour at the border pushing through customs. On Saturday we went into the Manzini market and then to a traditional celebration, the Reed Dance. It is a celebration for all the married women in Swaziland. The King of Swaziland was there (identified by three feathers in his hair). Everyone was in traditional clothing and the women sang and danced with weapons of dance in their hands (i.e. dusters, large wooden spoons). I was surprised by how well the people of Swaziland were able to hold on to their culture and traditions. I was happy to see that it was not a “touristy” event and most people there were locals. Saturday night we went to Milwake Game Reserve and stayed in circular huts for the night. When we woke in the morning and opened the windows, we could see zebras! Because this park did not contain dangerous animals, i.e. lions, elephants, wild dogs, we were able to go hiking through the park the whole day! It was fun to walk next to zebras, waterbuck, and wildebeest. We also saw hippos and crocodiles in the lake. We had a great weekend. I was very happy to be able to visit another country and feel a difference in culture. Swaziland is the only pure monarchy left in Africa and it also has only one major ethnic group, unlike South Africa where many different groups live together.

Sexual health for the Millennium - Declaration of the 17th World Congress of Sexology
[English] [French] [Arabic] [Portuguese] ... [Spanish] Sex work and the politics of researching gender and culture
Sex work, a critical subject in advancing knowledge on gender and work, has a troubled position in the African academy. In 2000, at the center for Basic Research in Uganda, we sat as a scientific committee to select abstracts submitted by 160 prospective researchers in the Eastern and Southern African region on the subject of gender and work. There was not one single abstract on sex work. So I asked the committee, "What about sex work?" Full article » Research and capacity-building for the promotion of sexual health and well-being in the West Africa region
Despite three decades of capacity building, there is still little research on the health problems of the poor. This is even more acute regarding sexual health of people in West Africa. Research is essential in improving the status of sexual health in any community.
