Kings, queens, and princes, wild beasts and exotic birds Shawn and I have traveled to the land of fairytales! Swaziland, the smallest country in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the few absolute monarchies left in the world, is definitely magical. When the people speak, it is as if they are singing. Their native language, Siswati, is quick and bouncing, like a gazelle or a hip-hop song. But when they speak English, which most do, it is slower and more melodic. The words they choose in English are like poetry, a small indication of the richness of their language to non-Siswati speakers like me. For example, today I asked a man on the street for directions to the Post Office. His reply went something like this: "You move straight, do not turn, until you reach the place where the water bubbles up from the ground. Then you will move left, down the hill." I wandered off smiling, entertained by visions of a mountain spring here in the middle of the city of

Media Directory MISA-SWAZILAND Country Profile The Kingdom of Swaziland under the leadership of King Mswati III, Africa 's last absolute monarchy, has continued to face numerous socio-political and economic challenges. The subsequent challenges around the rule of law and the continuous tensions regarding the constitutional developments are a great concern to political development of this country. What remains a great challenge though for this parliament is that they do not have an instrument that elevates them to a Constitutional Assembly. At present moment, the second draft has not been distributed to the masses, for further scrutiny. The infamous 1973 Decree that saw the office of the Kingship assuming the executive, legislative and judiciary powers has centered on one person. Political parties were banned as the Bill of Rights was thrown out of the window. The King has continued to enjoy unequivocal powers in the absence of the repealed Independence Constitution. Progressive formations and labour movements have had nasty experiences at the hands of the security forces as they attempted to pursue a political agenda and call for democratic changes. The country remains governed under the 1973 Kings Proclamation to the Nation and the Tinkhundla system of Government that was initially an experiment by the late King Sobhuza II. Majority of the people have since adopted a culture of silence in the absence of free political activity. The civil society has never been exposed to good civic education on matters of good governance and democratic dispensation. Recently, the King introduced the concept of a ‘Smart Dialogue' without success in addressing the impasse and tensions within the political and economical front.

Swaziland Culture Back to Top The two main cultural events are the Incwala in December and the Umhlanga in August. The Incwala is sometimes described as a first-fruits ceremony, but, spread over six days, it is a much more complex ritual of renewing and strengthening the kingship and the nation, with songs and dances used only on this occasion. The Umhlanga, or Reed Dance, brings together the maidens of the nation to cut reeds for the annual repairs to the windbreaks of the queen mother's village; it lasts for five days. It is also symbolic of the unity of the nation and of its perpetuation through the massed ranks of young women. Both ceremonies are held at the national capital of the queen mother. Other ceremonies are associated with the communal weeding and harvesting of the king's fields and with customary marriages. Most ceremonies are accompanied by orthodox music, songs, and dancing. Musical instruments are simple in design, a kudu horn used for hunting or herding cattle, a calabash attached to a bow for love songs, the reed flute, played by small boys while herding, and rattles made of seedpods attached to the wrists and ankles. more typical of the homestead nowadays are the radio and record and tape players.

Swaziland is a small landlocked country in Southern Africa. It is almost completely surrounded by South Africa but it also borders on Mozambique . Most people visiting Swaziland will come from Johannesburg only about 400 km from Mbabane the capital of Swaziland and connected by good roads. The major attraction of the country is its well preserved culture. From the ritual smearing of the bride with red ochre in the traditional marriage ceremony to the mystical rite of Kingship, the Incwala, each ritual is deeply significant and is performed only at the appropriate time and place. The centuries- old ceremonies are as valid today as they were in days of Ngwane, the first King of Swaziland and this balance of ancient and modern, traditional and western gives Swaziland and her people their distinctive character. Urban Swazi's in spite of a very 20th century lifestyle still maintain firm links to the rural areas where water is fetched from the river and cooking takes place in a three-legged pot over an open fire. When duty calls, there is no contradiction for the majority of Swazi's in leaving an air-conditioned office in town and shedding a three-piece business suit in favour of the traditional cloths and skins of emahiya and to take their place with the regiments to perform the task or ceremony for which the nation has been summoned. Watching the regiments wearing the traditional dress of their great-grand-fathers, singing the songs of their ancestors and performing the ancient ritual dances, only the glimpse of a wristwatch here or a flashlight there will remind you that this is not the Swaziland of a hundred or two hundred years ago. Remember that no man will gain the respect of a Swazi unless he is married. In Swazi culture, if you are single, you have no experience!

The Book Chain in Swaziland By Makana Mavuso In 1968, just a month before the country attained its independence, the Proscribed Publications Act (No. 17 of 1968) was enacted. This empowered the Minister of Public Service and Information to proscribe any publication by notice published in the Gazette 'if the publication is prejudicial or potentially prejudicial to the interest of defence, public safety, public order, public morality or public health'. The Swaziland National Archives University of Swaziland Library and Swaziland National Library. It is worth noting that, although the Swaziland National Library Service has been in operation for a number of years, it was only in 2001 that a Bill (No. 11 of 2001) was introduced to establish this service. Literacy, languages, writers and writing Two main languages serve as official languages in the country: English and Siswati. These are used throughout the education system, and in any materials published, e.g. newspapers and books. In recent years, very few Swazi nationals have been engaged in writing, for it does not appeal as an occupation or as a serious source of income. The only area that has a number of writers is in the production of learning materials e.g. textbooks for schools. Prior to the country's independence, schools were using textbooks written and published in South Africa and other countries. It was realized that such material was not always relevant to Swazi children and that even the schools' curricula needed to be improved. The National Curriculum Centre (NCC) was then established to perform the following tasks, among others:
