Sustainable Agriculture A sustainable agriculture is economically profitable, environmentally sound, and socially viable for the long term. Many of the links listed at the end of this page deal directly with defining sustainable agriculture in more detail. This page focuses on the production, processing and marketing of agricultural products that are grown or sold in non-conventional ways. Examples include various methods of direct marketing, on-farm or cooperative processing, and organic food and feed. Below are brief descriptions of CARI projects, programs and resources that fall under the umbrella of sustainable agriculture. Click on each to go to that item's page.

of Science Sponsored by With the population exceeding 6 billion and growing by about 6 million a month, the need to protect agricultural land and to increase food production has become critical. Does sustainable agriculture have the answers? Printer-friendly version of complete topic About 5000 years ago, large cities were flourishing in the flat plains of what is now southern Iraq. The cities were surrounded by thousands of hectares of crop land irrigated from the rivers. Farmers grew barley, wheat, flax, dates, apples, plums and grapes, and herded sheep and goats for meat and milk. This early example of intensive agriculture proved unsustainable. By around 4000 years ago, desert had replace the fields and the cities had been abandoned. History records many such examples of agricultural communities flourishing and then failing, often because farming eroded the soil, exhausted the soil’s nutrients or caused a build-up of salt. There were many fewer mouths to feed in those days; the global population was probably no more than a couple of hundred million. So if agriculture failed in one area, plenty of arable land remained available for development. The world no longer has that luxury. The need to protect agricultural land and to increase food production has become critical. Around the world the concept of sustainable agriculture has been embraced to try to ensure that food supplies will continue to match demand.

INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH IN THE DRY AREAS Helping Small Enterprises Capture the Livestock Products Market in West Asia and North Africa The good news is that demand for small ruminant products in West Asia and North Africa (WANA) is expected to grow due to increased affluence and population growth. The bad news is that the poor in marginal areas of the region whose livelihoods depend on livestock production may lose their market share due to low productivity and poor marketing infrastructure. Improper livestock production practices may also erode the natural resources.

LEISA Magazine, Volume 21:2 - More than money
- Agriculture has a fundamental role to play in supporting and shaping our present-day societies. It has far greater value to humans than the market price for the final produce: Agriculture could potentially form the basis for strong rural communities and their economic activities, provide healthy food and maintain ecosystem services such as clean air and water, recycling of nutrients, and the maintenance of biodiversity and attractive landscapes. In this issue of LEISA Magazine we have tried to bring together examples of how people have been able to create a richer and more sustainable livelihood through wise use of their natural resources and the available opportunities. Strengthening their communities has often proven to be an essential part of this process. Read the articles. global edition

The Southern SAWG assists family farmers and farm communities to prosper in a healthy environment by helping to remove technical, institutional and economic barriers to sustainability. Southern SAWG works to:
  • Provide forums for the exchange of information between farmers and others in the agricultural community. Enlarge the marketing opportunities for sustainable farmers and assist in the development of farmer-controlled marketing strategies. Advocate for sustainability as a fundamental principle of state and federal agricultural policies. Redirect land-grant university research and technical assistance priorities towards sustainable agriculture. Build farmer leadership in the sustainable agriculture movement.

Impact of Food Production on the Environment
Impact of Food Production and Diet on Health ... Acknowledgements Abstract Environ Health Perspect 110:445-456 (2002). [Online 20 March 2002] Introduction The Union of Concerned Scientists (1) said that industrial agriculture views the farm as a factory with "inputs" (such as pesticides, feed, fertilizer, and fuel) and "outputs" (corn, chickens, and so forth). The goal is to increase yield (such as bushels per acre) and decrease costs of production, usually by exploiting economies of scale. Industrial agriculture depends on expensive inputs from off the farm (e.g., pesticides and fertilizer), many of which generate wastes that harm the environment; it uses large quantities of nonrenewable fossil fuels; and it tends toward concentration of production, driving out small producers and undermining rural communities. The following environmental and public health concerns are associated with the prevailing production methods:

Reducing Food Poverty with Sustainable Agriculture:
A Summary of New Evidence Executive Summary Jules Pretty and Rachel Hine, University of Essex
SAFE-World Research Project
February 2001 The Scale of the Challenge
  • Over the past 40 years, per capita world food production has grown by 25%, and food prices in real terms have fallen by 40%. Between the early 1960s and mid-1990s, average cereal yields grew from 1.2 t/ha to 2.52 t/ha in developing countries whilst total cereal production has grown from 420 to 1176 million tonnes per year. At the year 2000, there were 790 million people hungry. Despite progress on average per capita consumption of food (up 17% in the past 30 years to 2760 kcal), people in 33 countries still consume under 2200 kcal per day. Although a combination of increased production and more imports will mean per capita consumption will increase to about 3000 kcal per day by 2015, food insecurity and malnutrition will still persist.
  • Changes in Demand for Food
  • Food demand will both grow and shift in the coming decades for three reasons: increasing numbers of people (until at least the mid-late 21 st century) mean the absolute demand for food will increase;

    Sterling College About Sterling Academic Programs Student Life ... Academic Calendar Sustainable Agriculture Description of Major Samples of Internships and Senior Applied Research Projects Degree Requirements News to Note! Sterling College's Sustainable Agriculture Program was recently highlighted in an article about college and university farms. The article can been found on the Rodale Institute's New Farm website , which "reaches a global community of food producers to exchange valuable 'farmer-to-farmer know-how.'" Sustainable agriculture strives to build a food and fiber production system that is economically viable, while protecting or enhancing environmental quality and the quality of life for consumers and farmers. Farmers and other agricultural professionals work to develop innovative farming techniques, and vibrant local economies and markets, while protecting natural resources such as soil and water quality, and wildlife habitat. Our Sustainable Agriculture program parallels the College’s mission by combining academic study, experiential challenges, and work. The College Farm, consisting of solar-powered barns, pasturelands, gardens, fruit trees, greenhouses, and a diversity of livestock, is a living lab for the exploration of sustainable agricultural systems. Working alongside faculty, students become involved in the farm through a college-wide work program, structured skill-building activities, and careful academic inquiry into farming systems. Students study the principles of science and economics that underlie agricultural systems and learn a variety of agricultural techniques and practices applicable to the small, diversified farm and homestead. Further classes provide additional technical knowledge, explore and assess a range of agricultural models from biodynamic to corporate farms, and examine the human relationship to nature and agro-ecosystems.
