The aim of the conference is to present and discuss new developments and trends in energy technologies which may make major contributions to sustainable energy developments in the coming decades.
The world is facing major challenges in providing energy services to meet the future needs of the developed world and, in particular, the growing needs of developing countries. This challenge is enhanced by the need to provide these energy services with due respect to following factors: • Economic growth
• Sustainability
• Security of supply
• Exploitation of local resources
• Reduction of CO emissions Recent research shows that energy technologies can make significant contributions to economic development while meeting concerns about the climate and environment. However, this will require dedicated policy efforts and intensification of energy research and development.
The Risø International Energy Conference 2005 will identify critical areas where action is required now as well as in medium and long-term perspective. The conference will focus on the scientific development of new technologies, their market perspectives, and realistic contributions to the factors listed above. What are the requirements new technologies need to meet, and what are the perspectives for their role in the future supply system?

Efficiency and Renewable Energy Funding Proposed for Cuts by White House
Funding levels for most of the DOE's core renewable energy programs have been targeted for reductions including the biomass/biofuels, geothermal, hydropower, and solar energy programs. Collectively, these accounts would be reduced by nearly $24 million, not including another $4 million targeted to be cut from the Distributed Energy account. Similarly, a number of the core energy efficiency accounts are also targeted for reductions. These include the Industrial Energy Efficiency program which would be cut by $18.3 million or 24%, the Energy Efficient Buildings program whose funding would be reduced by $7.5 million or 11% and the State Energy Program which would be cut by $3.2 million or 7%. The letter argues that "at a time when the price of gasoline is exceeding $2 per gallon, a barrel of oil is over $50, and natural gas is more than $6/mmBtu, cut-backs in DOE's core EE/RE programs are truly penny-wise and pound-foolish."

Industrial ecology and sustainable energy
Optimisation techniques for sustainable production
This research is focused on modelling product-process chains with respect to sustainability-related topics, particularly reuse/recycling related problems, and sustainable industrial parks. There is an emphasis on quantitative analysis and the application of mathematical programming techniques. This is complementary to other work of the same researchers, in which application of techniques from systems and control theory is investigated.
Eco-industrial parks
The main emphasis of this research is on the enhancement of sustainability of industrial parks, by means of (1) the exchange of materials and energy flows, (2) the efficient use of surface area and (3) the clustering of activities. Although the focus is om quantitative analysis of materials- and energy flows, this is embedded in a context of organisatorial, town and country planning, and other relevant aspects.
Sustainable waste water treatment systems
The project is aimed at gaining insight in sustainability-related aspects of the various wastewater treatment systems. A method is developed for optimisation and comparison of a large number of such systems simultaneously. A methodological framework is developed, based on LCA, but extended with economic, social, and technological sustainability aspects. Based on an inventor, mathematical models of these technologies are formulated, subsequently a selection is carried out that is based on optimalisation calculations. This will provide us with more insight on the achievable sustainability level of waste water treatment plants.

Operation Fresh Start is a U.S. Department of Energy initiative that aims to help communities apply the principles of sustainable development when recovering from natural disasters, as well as to use sustainable planning techniques in pre-disaster development. This section provides background information to help you understand sustainable development and how this vibrant principle can be applied to strengthen your community’s future. Sustainable development is a strategy by which communities seek economic development approaches that also benefit the local environment and quality of life. It has become an important guide to many communities that have discovered the traditional approaches to planning and development are creating, rather than solving, societal and environmental problems. Where traditional approaches can lead to congestion, sprawl, pollution, and resource overconsumption, sustainable development offers real, lasting solutions that will strengthen our future. Below are a selection of articles that present good overviews of sustainable development, as well as a list of top Web sites that offer additional information and resources.

Sustainable energy: perspectives for Asia
[Report No. 2002GW44, prepared for The Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs]
Executive summary This study undertaken just before the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002, examined the context within which the energy sector in the Asian region has evolved over the last 25 years, with a view to evaluating the sustainability of this evolution. The exercise was supported by the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Norway, and executed under the auspices of the AEI (Asian Energy Institute) The assessment draws on a review of the literature, an analysis of data and an evaluation of perceptions of eminent personalities, experts, and different stakeholders on developments in the energy sector and their impact on the economy, society, and the environment. The study points to mixed performance, with developments in the sector being driven by political, economic, and strategic considerations and less so by sustainability imperatives when there is a conflict. There has been a general decrease in energy intensity of GDP in the region driven by structural and technological factors. Energy intensities also vary widely within the region reflective of differences in structural composition of economies, technological factors, level of development, dependence on traditional fuels, energy self sufficiency, fuel mix and so on. Sector reforms and an integrated energy vision can be catalytic in influencing each of these forces towards greater efficiency of the energy system. Prices can play an important role in the context of structural reform, inducing not only advancements in technology but also structural changes that promote a pattern of growth that optimizes the use of a nation's resource endowments, both human and natural.
