Democracy's Edge and Hope's Edge "The ecological crisis is in part a crisis of education. This highly original volume makes a critical contribution to rethinking how we teach our children about their place in nature. The best book of its kind."Michael Pollan, author of The Botany of Desire "This is a marvelous book. Zenobia Barlow and Michael Stone present a beautiful array of essays that embrace theory, philosophy and practice with spirit and substance. Ecological Literacy: Educating Our Children for a Sustainable World is a remarkable gift to environmental educators everywhere."Bora Simmons, Past President, North American Association for Environmental Education DESCRIPTION (back to top) Reorienting the way human beings live on the Earth and educating children to their highest capacities have much in common, say the thinkers and educators behind this groundbreaking book. Both endeavors must be viewed and pursued in the context of systems: familial, geographic, ecological, political. And our efforts to build sustainable communities cannot succeed unless future generations learn how to partner with natural systems to their mutual benefit. In other words, they must become "ecologically literate."

POST CONFERENCE REPORT THE SUSTAINABLE CITY 2004 Third International Conference on Urban Regeneration and Sustainability
    16 - 18 June 2004
    Siena, Italy
Organised by Wessex Institute of Technology, UK and The University of Siena, Italy Incorporating the Prigogine Awards OVERVIEW The Third International Conference on The Sustainable City took place recently in Siena and Colle Val D'Elsa, organised by the University of Siena and the Wessex Institute of Technology. This meeting is one of several important initiatives taken by WIT in collaboration with the renowned Italian Academic Institution.
The conference addressed a series of problems of great importance and urgency in modern society. The meeting attracted a large number of participants from a wide variety of fields, stressing the need to find solutions which bring different disciplines together. This conference was particularly important as it launched the newly established Prigogine Medal and Prize. It was opened by Prof Nicola Dimitri, Vice Rector of the University of Siena and an economist who referred to the importance of Prigogine's work for all scientists, including his own speciality. He was particularly pleased by the new award being associated with his University as Prof Prigogine had strong connections with Siena where he had received an honorary PhD degree.

revised 07-30-00 Agroecology: principles and strategies for designing sustainable farming systems. Miguel A. Altieri University of California, Berkeley Principles of Agroecology In the search to reinstate more ecological rationale into agricultural production, scientists and developers have disregarded a key point in the development of a more self-sufficient and sustaining agriculture: a deep understanding of the nature of agroecosystems and the principles by which they function. Given this limitation, agroecology has emerged as the discipline that provides the basic ecological principles for how to study, design and manage agroecosystems that are both productive and natural resource conserving, and that are also culturally sensitive, socially just and economically viable (Altieri 1995). Agroecology goes beyond a one-dimensional view of agroecosystems - their genetics, agronomy, edaphology, and so on,- to embrace an understanding of ecological and social levels of co-evolution, structure and function. Instead of focusing on one particular component of the agroecosystem, agroecology emphasizes the interrelatedness of all agroecosystem components and the complex dynamics of ecological processes (Vandermeer 1995).
