Introduction
Increasing numbers of Christian theologians and ethicists are responding to the environmental challenge as the world gets hotter, stormier, unequal, crowded, more violent, and less biodiverse. In this pivotal time, what do Christian ecotheology and ethics contribute to the struggle to secure the earth community’s well-being? The multiple traditions of Christianity take competing and cooperative forms and convey an emphasis that can be either constricting or liberating. The focus here is on recent ecumenical Christian thought that emphasizes seven key themes.
Seven Key Themes
The first theme reexamines elements of scripture and tradition and refocuses Christian affirmations and ethics in ecologically-alert terms. All of the earth community is valuable to God, who continues to create, sustain, and redeem the whole. God relates directly to and cares for the well-being of otherkind, created to enjoy being in their own right and not only function as companions or helpers of humankind. Christians are recovering an earth-centered pneumatology that experiences God’s spirit immanent in creation as the power of life-giving breath

May 5, 2005 Global Ecology Research Center Receives 2005 Excellence in Energy and Sustainability Award from AIA San Francisco Located at Stanford University, this center is an extremely low-energy laboratory and office building for the Carnegie Institution, based in Washington, D.C. The Global Ecology Research Center building drastically reduces carbon impacts while providing laboratory and research spaces that meet the highest standards of comfort and performance. The design team was able to reduce carbon emissions associated with the building operation and materials by over 60% over traditional measures, while aggressively pursuing habitat and water conservation goals. 'The Global Ecology Research Center achieves what some people thought was unattainable: a high level of energy performance without compromising important non-energy sustainable design issues,' said Peter Rumsey, president of Rumsey Engineers. 'It's extremely gratifying to be recognized by the AIA for the extraordinary work done by the design team to make the client's vision a reality.' The AIA's Excellence in Sustainability Award honors built work that lowers the impacts of building operations on energy demand and global climate change. While the primary focus of this award is energy performance, the winning project must take an integrated approach, creating a healthy, aesthetically pleasing environment for users, and fostering resource efficiency in non-energy related areas.

Integral Ecology and Sustainability
Recorded at Integral Institute's first Ecology and Sustainability seminar, these clips provide an introduction to integral ecological awareness. The premise of Integral Ecology is simple: only by using a better map of ourselves will we be able to help save Gaia. An all-quadrant, all-level and see the problem, one must also be at a moral stage where one is motivated to act upon it. Moreover, any activist has to build social consensus between people with different cultural contexts, economic backgrounds, behavioral patterns, and levels of interior development. Not an easy task! But one made easier, we hope, by using an integral map....

http://www.strom.clemson.edu/publications/Potts/introduction.html
What is Travel Ecology?
T ravel ecology is a community tourism planning approach uniting the themes of social development and ecological sustainability (Potts and Harrill In press; 1998; 1997). We argue that sustainable tourism and "sustainable community tourism development" have failed to emphasize the constraints and opportunities associated with the development of local social and political institutions. We contend that tourism planning should help create equitable, sustainable communities resilient enough to survive in a highly volatile international environment, rather than "sustaining" tourism or specific aspects of tourism development. The term travel ecology indicates theoretical affinity with the fields of political ecology and cultural ecology, as well as an attempt to move away from sustainable tourism models. From global political ecology, the approach incorporates an impact analysis of international economic and political conditions on community sustainability. From American cultural ecology, the approach borrows the environmental ethics of Leopold and Muir as well as the democratic pragmatism of John Dewey. The travel ecology approach is based upon six broadly conceived principles: discovery, mutuality, locality, historicity, potentiality, and enhancement. We view these principles as contributing to tourism planning theory, rather than constituting a definitive model or process: Discovery is the beginning of dialogue among residents, during which they discover mutual fears and expectations. It is during this phase that the tourism planner must assist with the construction of goals and objectives, assist inventory development, facilitate public dialogue, and at times mitigate conflict between stakeholder groups. The sustainable tourism literature places little emphasis on potential conflicts arising over resource distribution and use. The travel ecology approach recognizes that conflict is a necessary part of the "good" community as a method of social learning.

http://www.ssu.missouri.edu/faculty/jikerd/papers/Ecology-Sustainability.htm
The Ecology of Sustainability John Ikerd The World Book Encyclopedia provides three different definitions of Ecology: the branch of biology that deals with the relation of living things to their environment and to each other, the branch of sociology that deals with the relations between human beings and their environment, and the balanced or harmonious relationship of living things to their environment. All three are appropriate and relevant to issues of sustainability. Sustainability is a question – a big question – as the late Bob Rodale, an early pioneer of sustainable agriculture, used to say. How can we meet the needs of people today, all people today, while leaving equal or better opportunities for those of the future? How can we ensure the long run health and productivity of the natural ecosystem? How can we create a healthy, enduring society? To achieve and maintain sustainability, we must integrate the ecology of biology and sociology with a new ecology of economics in finding ways to work and to live in harmony and balance with each other, other living things, and our natural environment. Today, we are confronted with growing evidence that contemporary, modern society is not sustainable.

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Industrial Ecology and Sustainability
Robert A. Frosch
What is now called "industrial ecology" brings these developments together into a systems view of industry, seen by analogy with natural ecosystems as a collection of industrial organisms organized into a network through which flow energy and used and reused materials, and from which come products and services. We can study material civilization as an ecological network involving industry, consumers and the natural environment. This large-scale system view illuminates new possibilities for connections in the material and energy web, and new ways to minimize or eliminate environmentally destructive effects of human activities. I have been involved with the development of industrial ecology since it began some years ago, stimulated by Robert U. Ayres's work in industrial metabolism, growing through a series of workshops conducted by the National Academy of Engineering, and through the work of a network of academic, industrial, non-government organization and government colleagues.
