The Unsustainability of Cities Patterns of urban development are a particular focus of concern in the search for a path to a sustainable world. The majority of world cities are vortices of unsustainability, concentrating environmental threats and social and economic distress.
  • As magnets of hope cities have drawn rural populations who, in most developing countries, live in sprawling urban slums, shanty towns, colonias, favelas, or townships. Their economies reflect the growing global inequality of wealth and income distribution. Cities concentrate industrial development and its pollution. Motor vehicles dominate urban transportation systems, producing gridlock, excessive use of valuable land, local air pollution, and greenhouse gases. Cities' massive and inefficient energy consumption wastes resources and generates greenhouse gases. Economic globalization lacks an effective model for sustainable local development.

Welcome to the Indigo Development Research and Development Center. Indigo is a research and consulting organization creating systems solutions to meet major challenges of sustainable development. Indigo functions as an action oriented think tank linking the conceptual design of our innovations with strategic plans for implementation. In these pages you can learn about industrial ecology (IE) and how we are applying it to issues of sustainability.
Briefly, industrial ecology is an interdisciplinary framework for designing and operating industrial systems as living systems that are interdependent with natural systems. We view public and private services, urban design, and agriculture as fields that can benefit from IE. Industrial ecology's primary goal is to Abalance environmental and economic interests within emerging understanding of local and global ecological constraints. To achieve this goal industrial ecologists must also coordinate with the social dimension of sustainable development.
Indigo Development creates systems solutions to meet the challenges of sustainable development through industrial ecology:

What do we mean by ecological justice? Ecological sustainability? Sustainable communities? The ecumenical community envisions a world which is secure and flourishing, where the well-being of humans and all other living creatures is cherished, supported and maintained in a harmonious balance; where peoples and livelihoods prosper and the health of the Earth Community is nurtured. Justice and equity must be at the heart of any sustainable economic, social or environmental system supporting Earth Community. Air, water, land and energy sources are part of the necessary environment to sustain life. Ecological Justice is that which respects, seeks to preserve, and advocates for just relationships among all living things. It concerns the future of all life upon this planet, the condition of the natural world and our human impact or footprint upon it.

Bija Vidyapeeth
An initiative of Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology and Navdanya, India; Bija Vidyapeeth offers various courses in Ecological Education for Earth Democracy . This newly founded Institute provides conference and seminar as well as residential facilities in an ambience that reinvigorates our vital link with nature, promotes contemplation and enquiry and dynamic action. Bija Vidyapeeth courses are held at ecological centre on Navdanya's biodiversity conservation and organic farm. Nestling between the Himalayas and the Sivaliks and the Ganga and the Yamuna, the 8-acre farm has rejuvenated biodiversity on a landscape left barren and desertified by eucalyptus monoculture. More than 600 varieties of plants now flourish on the farm, including 250 rice varieties, 30 wheat varieties, and diverse varieties of millet, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables and medicinal plants. . The Navdanya Farm is located 10miles from Dehradun, the capital of the newly formed state of Uttaranchal. This rich biodiversity provides the context for education in earth democracy in which participants learn from nature, and from each other, while they study, live, clean, cook and eat together. Most of the food served at Bija Vidyapeeth comes from Navdanya's own organic farm.

Insight Sustainability, Stability, and Resilience Donald Ludwig Brian Walker , and Crawford S. Holling Department of Mathematics, University of British Columbia; Division of Wildlife and Ecology, CSIRO; Department of Zoology, University of Florida ABSTRACT The purpose of this essay is to define and refine the concepts of stability and resilience and to demonstrate their value in understanding the behavior of exploited systems. Some ecological systems display several possible stable states. They may also show a hysteresis effect in which, even after a long time, the state of the system may be partly determined by its history. The concept of resilience depends upon our objectives, the types of disturbances that we anticipate, control measures that are available, and the time scale of interest. KEY WORDS: bifurcation; multiple stable states; resilience; stability.

  • Introduction
ABSTRACT KEY WORDS: birds, boreal, conservation, disturbance, forests, forestry, natural resources, Nearctic, Palearctic, sustainability, trends. INTRODUCTION The northern boreal forest, or taiga, an area dominated by forests, peatlands, and water, is one of the largest and youngest biomes in the world (Shugart et al. 1992, Helle and Niemi 1996). The current condition of the boreal forest varies from areas that have received intensive management for wood production (such as in northern Europe and Canada) to large, pristine forest areas that have never been logged (such as in central Siberia and in Alaska). The dominant natural disturbance of the boreal forest is fire (Heinselman 1973, Zackrisson 1977, Wein and MacLean 1983), although insect outbreaks, wind, and other animals (e.g., beaver, Castor spp.) are also significant disturbances in many areas (Pastor et al. 1996).

http://www.edibleschoolyard.org/cla_eco.html
Students and staff at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School practice the Principles of Ecology by participating in a community that recognizes the interconnectedness of all living systems. Students' experiences in The Edible Schoolyard kitchen and garden are linked to their science and humanities curricula through the key concepts of community, sustainability, diversity, responsibility, networks, systems, cycles, and flows. These concepts, developed by the Center for Ecoliteracy , are embedded in the long-term pedagogical goals and vision of the school. The overarching principle of community informs the teaching and learning across the sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade programs at King.
Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School
prides itself on being a place where the needs of the student are central, where learning is serious business and expectations are high, and where community values of mutual respect and concern are translated into action. It strives to create a sustainable and nurturing community.
At MLK Middle School, The Edible Schoolyard provides a context in which to experiment with educating the whole child. By focusing on the garden and the kitchen, solutions are sought that are not typical of traditional classroom work. The Principles of Ecology and systems thinking offer tremendous potential for growth and change in education as a whole.
