Most of the population lives in the capital Paramaribo, and most of the rest live in the coastal region, in villages and towns along the main road of the country, aptly called the "East-West Connection". In the old days transport went over water though, so most places are also along the river. Curiously enough, it is possible to travel the country from East to West along inland rivers and canals. In this story I will just visit two villages: the Amerindian village Galibi, on the mouth of the river Maroni, and, deep into the interior, the Maroon village of Dritabiki.
Galibi
There are two tribes of Amerindians in the coastal region: the Arowaks and the Caribs. The Arowaks are the oldest inhabitants of Suriname, and invented agriculture there. Long before the Europeans came, the Caribs had arrived, and pushed the Arowaks from their best grounds. The strength of the Caribs was their invention of the sailing ship *. Their largest settlement, capital if you want, is on the mouth of river Marowijne. This place is called Galibi houses *, that stand, well separated, in a long row along the river. The Indians here are still roughly 75% self-supporting: producing their own food, cloths, tools, etc., although, of course the influence of western culture is strong: they are Catholics now, and their children go to school. The main occupation is fishing (on the ocean). They decided to do a bit of over-production here: a co-operative business was formed, and they sell the surplus catch in town. This way the Galibians hope to stay in control of their own future, and not become a tourist attraction. For themselves, they like their

Winti Culture, an Afro-Suriname religion.
Winti is an Afro-Suriname religion and culture with a strong social foundation. Winti has its own reference of notions and core symbols: the four elements: Mother-earth, water fire and air-and its own magical ritual acts as wel.
Winti has also strong roots in the Afro-American religion.
A short explanation about Winti

A Short Biography of the Author
Henri.J.M. Stephen born in 1934 in Coronie, Suriname. The former dutch Guyana. He worked for more than 36 years in the health care in the Netherlands and Suriname. He has also worked in the Gouvernement Hospital in Paramaribo and for the last twenty years at the clinical department of psychiatry and neurology at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. While he was in Suriname (South America) he got aquainted with the traditional popular health care of Suriname. He discovered how valuable traditional health care was and how beneficial this approach was to patients. Henri Stephen did his military services in the Netherlands and was engaged in serveral medical duties. He worked in several millitary hospitals in Suriname as well in the Netherlands. During his military service he was often sent into the jungle and was entrusted dities, which required medical skill.
Henri Stephen counsels in his capacity as a confident many people throughout the country. He is asked for advice by hospitals, social institutions, courts and many other institutions engages in the field of education. He is a " bridgebuilder" between two cultures and between transcultural-psychiatry, spirituality on the one hand and the regular mental healthcare on the other hand. But Henri Stephen is above all a conservator of the, from one generation to the other, oral transmitted philosophical and religious wisdom of the Afro-Surinamese (South America) society. Low population density and shifting political fortunes have combined in a way that has, until very recently, minimized the environmental threats to these forests. In Suriname, CI is working to promote biodiversity conservation through the rehabilitation of the existing protected area system, and the development of economically viable market alternatives such as non-timber forest products and ecotourism. Suriname Culture Suriname's ethnic mix is reflected in the religious allegiances of its people. The most important Christian denominations are Roman Catholic and Moravian Brethren, but many Christian groups also practice traditional African beliefs such as obeah and winti . About 80% of the East Indian population are Hindu. Although Dutch is the official language, the vernacular Sranan (also known as Surinaams), an English-based creole, is widely spoken. Hindi, Javanese, Chinese, Djuka and Saramaccan (both English-based creoles) and various Amerindian languages are also spoken. The development of a strong national arts scene has been hampered by the fact that many of the country's intelligentsia live abroad (mostly in the Netherlands), partly because of greater economic opportunities and partly because of military repression. However, gamelan offers an insight into the cultural life of the Indonesian community; sculpture and carvings express the values of the Amerindian and Bush Negro populations.

Have you already visited the Suriname Museum? A visit to this museum, located in the Fort Zeelandia, is a must during your stay in Suriname.
Fort Zeelandia was named after the Dutch Province of Zeeland, when the fort was conquered from the English by the Dutch Admiral Abraham Crijnssen in 1667. It is the place where the first colonists set foot on land, and this is where Suriname, as we know it today, originated. The location of the Fort Zeelandia on the bank of the Suriname River does not only have a historical meaning: it still provides a spectacular view from the bastions of the fort. Every first Sunday of the month there is a cultural event in the courtyard of the fort. Usually, the performances during this cultural evening include singing, dancing and music of the various cultures of Suriname. Please check the local media for information on the program of the coming cultural event. The Suriname Museum hereby invites you to take look at not only the past, but also at the contemporary culture of Suriname. The Suriname Museum would like to welcome you on the Fort Zeelandia grounds, located on the riverside, behind the building of the National Assembly. The museum is open Tuesdays to Fridays, from 9 am - 2 pm, and on Sundays from 10 am - 2 pm. Every Sunday there are guided tours at 11 am and 12.30 pm. If you would like a guided tour on other days, please make an appointment by phone.
