Mt. Gretna ...A Special Place For Year-Round Enjoyment. (Visit a great online article on Mt. Gretna)
In the 1890's, the Pennsylvania Chautauqua Society founded Mt. Gretna, attracted by the region's natural beauty. The landscape is still just as inviting gently wooded mountains, a stream, and a lake. Throughout the Summer, the Chautauqua's educational and cultural tradition is carried on with first-rate events in music, theater, and art. As cooler weather sets in, the area displays some of the most stunning foliage of the Northeast. When snow flies, cross country skiers enjoy expertly groomed, picturesque trails. Spring brings a green-dusted calm to the acres of protected Gamelands, crossed by miles of trails for mountain biking and hiking.

Kids Summer Craft Ideas
By: Kelly Milano With summer here, many of us are looking for things to help keep our kids busy and out of trouble during the long, hot summer days. Without spending a fortune on craft supplies or days out, you can create some unique masterpieces with your children; masterpieces that can last a lifetime.
ROCK GARDEN
Encourage them to use their imaginations and look for rocks that can be turned into animals, flowers, dragons or fairies once you are at home. When you return home, cover your table or other work surface with plastic wrap. This makes for easy cleanup once the project is finished. Arrange an assortment of water tempra paints and paint brushes and have fun painting to your hearts content. Use the creations throughout your garden or house hold plants. Another idea is to take the dried rock creations, glue them into the inside lid of a clean, dry baby food jar, seal and glue the lid and you have your own miniture rock garden.
PAINTED PIGGY BANKS
Turn empty Koolaid canisters into piggy banks that your kids design and create. Simply peel the outside label off the plastic canister. Wash the canister and allow to dry completely. Once dry, arrange the various paints and brushes, remembering to cover the work surface with plastic wrap first. Your child can use their imagination to make a farm animal, a beach ball or other ball, face or anything they can dream up.

Without spending a fortune on craft supplies or days out, you can create some unique masterpieces with your children; masterpieces that can last a lifetime. ROCK GARDEN During the morning, when the sun's rays aren't so hot and the morning breeze is still present, take a walk together, looking for rocks. Kids love rock hunting and with every new find will grow more excited. Tell them to keep an eye out for rocks of all shapes and sizes, watching for flat, smooth stones, as well as jagged, sharp rocks. Posted to the Web: Thursday, August 04, 2005 Sorry, your browser does not support floating frames Opportunities for employment and income generating for youths and young school leavers abound in craft making, waiting to be explored. But many youths are seemingly unaware of the immense money-spinning potentials in craft making that could effectively tackle poverty in the country. Craft making is a "miracle vocation" with the increased demand abroad for Nigerian crafts such as beaded jewelries, beaded bags, adire clothes, beaded slippers and fashionable hats. Above all, children can acquire craft making skills for self employment. Vanguard Education Weekly spoke with Mrs. Modupe Phillips Adeyemo, Managing Director/Chief Executive, Adephim Ventures, operators of the Adephim Craft Center, located at RCCG Greater Grace Assembly, Bode Thomas, Surulere, Lagos. The center is organising a four-week summer craft making school to run from Monday, 8th August to 2nd September, 2005. Excerpts: When did you start this craft center?

Flowery Summer Hat
Back to Home Back To Summer Home This is an elegant summer hat draped with fresh flower.
Isn't this a nice idea to celebrate the sporting this bright and colorful headgear!
Supplies:
Poster board
a marker pen
one soft pencil
a pair of compasses
(one of those found in the geometry box)
a ruler
scissors
glue transparent tape twisted paper for decoration Steps: 1.Before getting started, fix up the size of the hat roughly. Tips: Place a ruler flat on the top of the wearer's head. Mark the two ends that hold the length of the wearer's head with a bright colored marker pen. Read the length. Place the ruler on a paper and mark these two marked-ends along the ruler with two dots. 2. Now, use a pair of compasses to draw a circle on colored poster board. Fix up the pencil from the needle of the compass at a length equal to the one read by the ruler. 3. For a better design, add some 5cm or 2 inches above the length you fix up. Now complete drawing the circle. When the first circle is finished, draw a second circle 2.5 cm or 1 inch inside the first one.

The activities below illustrate some of the crafts, techniques, and materials which Native and Colonial children might have used for their toys and crafts. None of these activities is inherently dangerous. All have been classroom tested over many years. However, TeachersFirst recommends that students interested in trying any of these acitivities at home get the permission of a parent before beginning.

Craft-of-the-Week Recipe-of-the-Week Dessert-of-the-Week ... Summer Learning by Osmosis
by Beth Bruno
Many educators say, "Students leave us every spring as efficient, effective learners, but after two months of vacation their minds have turned to mush! We have to spend many weeks every fall reviewing and re-teaching them what they have forgotten over the summer." Whether your child is in a traditional school or you are a homeschooler, essential skills can be lost over the summer, unless you take an active, yet subtle, role in your kids continuing education over the summer.
