Intervening in Child
and Teen Suicide
Intervention can take many forms and should throughout the different stages in the process. Prevention includes education efforts to alert students and the community to the problem of teen suicidal behavior . Intervention with a suicidal student is aimed at protecting and helping the student who is currently in distress . Postvention occurs after there has been a suicide in the school community. It attempts to help those affected by the recent suicide. In all cases it is a good idea to have a clear plan in place in advance. It should involve staff members and administration. There should be clear protocols and clear lines of communication. Careful planning can make interventions more organized, and effective.
Intervention With a Suicidal Student
Many schools have a written protocol for dealing with a student who shows signs of suicidal or other dangerous behavior . Some schools have automatic expulsion policies for students who engage in illegal or violent behavior. It is important to remember that teens who are violent or abuse drugs may be at increased risk for suicide . If someone is expelled, the school should attempt to help the parents arrange immediate, and possibly intensive psychiatric and behavioral intervention.

Initiatives in Rhode Island Prepared by The RI Suicide Prevention Planning Team June 2000 Revised July 2000 Northeast Injury Prevention Network Suicide Data Book: Rhode Island Data Highlights Gender Similar to national figures, in 1996 among Rhode Islanders 10-75+, females attempted suicide more often than males (80.6/100,000 vs. 59.4/100,000 people) but males completed suicide at a rate five times greater than the rate for females (16.3/100,000 vs. 3.8/100,000)*. Age Unlike national trends that show the greatest rates of suicide among people over 65, suicide rates in Rhode Island during the period 1992-1996 are evenly distributed across all age groups, with rates peaking at ages 40-44 (14.5/100,000)*. Note: Rates are not age-adjusted Race While the number of suicides among whites far exceeds those among minority groups, the suicide attempt rate for blacks is almost twice as high as for whites (124.4/100,000 vs. 65.3/100,000 respectively). The rate of suicide for all races combined during the period 1992-1996 were 9.6/100,000. YRBS According to 1997 YRBS data, 24% of high school students in Rhode Island seriously considered attempting suicide in the past 12 months compared to 20.5% nationwide, and 10% attempted suicide in the past 12 months compared to 7.7% nationwide.

LCQ13: Students committing suicide Following is a question by the Hon Frederick Fung and a written reply by the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr Yeoh Eng-kiong, in the Legislative Council today (December 3): Question: Regarding the problem of Hong Kong students committing suicide, will the Government inform this Council: (a) of the respective numbers of students who attempted suicide and who died of suicide in each of the past five years, broken down by grades in school; and (b) whether measures and means are in place to identify suicide-prone students and to help them give up the thought of suicide; if so, of the details and effectiveness of such measures and means; if not, the reasons for that? Reply: (a) According to the information reported by schools to the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB), the numbers of students involved in attempted suicide and fatal suicide (mutually exclusive) in the five school years from 1998/99 to 2002/03 are set out in the (b) Tackling the student suicide problem requires the concerted efforts of the Government and the community. Great Bend is proactive in promoting school and student safety. Before the tragedies in Colorado and other parts of our country, the district and the city of Great Bend began developing the position of school liaison police officer. That officer spends 80 percent of his time in the schools. He coordinates Crimestoppers and a youth forum at Great Bend High School and at Great Bend Middle School. In a joint effort with the district and the police department, emergency procedures have been updated and revised. This spring, Great Bend Middle School (GBMS) took a team of 12 students to the attorney general's "Increase the Peace" summit. The summit provided training for team-building, an opportunity for students to identify the problems in their own schools, and empowered the students attending to accept some control to self-monitor. GBMS team members presented to the student body a program explaining the district's expectations of acceptable behavior. The groups are planning regular assemblies, posters for the hall and other activities to model responsible behaviors throughout the year.

    Series on depression resonates
It isn't easy to look over the edge at suicide, but many have because of depression. By JIM TOLER
The Free Lance-Star Date published: SUICIDE AND DEPRESSION have touched more lives than I ever imagined. That fact is clear from reader response to the three-part series published earlier this week. The phone calls, e-mail messages and online chats on fredericksburg .com have been surprisingly positive, and definitely heart-wrenching when people open up about their situations and those of people close to them. Among those who called was a man who attempted to kill himself years ago. "I want to thank you for the articles you've been running on suicides," he said. "I understand the pain these folks go through. I got help for it and things are OK now."

Congressional attention to the mental health needs of children and adolescents has continued to increase significantly over the past year.  The heightened focus is due in large measure to departing U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher A number of recent legislative initiatives in Congress reflect the increased awareness of mental health issues.  Unfortunately there is still not clear recognition that schools are a natural context in which to provide effective prevention and intervention services for children and youth.  It is imperative that school psychologists communicate to Congress the benefits of school-based mental health services and the resources that are necessary to make them accessible and appropriate for all youngsters.
    Youth Suicide Prevention
Suicide is among the ten leading causes of death worldwide each year and is one the top five causes among 15-19 year olds (World Health Organization (WHO), 2001). Indeed, more teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease
