Perhaps a child you know is facing the death of a loved one. Adults often fear that children are too fragile to face the reality of death. Actually, most children are emotionally strong and want to know about death. The truth helps them understand what is real, and what is imaginary. Just like adults, children need to be able to feel pain, mourn, and grow. This fact sheet will help you understand how children view death and how you can help a child cope with the death of a loved one. To learn more about the process of mourning, read Learning to Live Through Loss (L-842) available from your Extension office [Kansas].
HOW PRESCHOOL CHILDREN PERCEIVE DEATH
Very young children understand facts best. They think in specific, concrete terms. When death is explained as "sleep" or "a long trip" they may expect the deceased to wake up, or return. Very young children see death as reversible, as it is often shown in cartoons. They may ask, "When will Bobby come back?" You may need to explain again and again, "Bobby is dead. That means he won't ever live with us again. But we will always remember him."

DETROIT, October 7, 2004 - Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network have awarded grants to nine community-based groups in Michigan to help more than 21,000 youths, their parents and teachers understand and combat one ofAmerica's most common, yet most hidden afflictions: depression. The grants are awarded to support the Social Mission of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network. Part of that mission is to create a positive impact on the health of Michigan's communities by focusing on four key social health initiatives: Depression Awareness and Treatment, Access to Health Care, Domestic Violence and Abuse Prevention, and Physical Activity and Nutrition. More than 35 proposals were received from groups across Michigan to help raise awareness about depression and direct children, youths and their parents to appropriate sources of care. The grants will fund programs through 2005, and were announced on National Depression Screening Day, Thursday, October 7.

During the 2001 legislative session, the Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 158 and Senate Bill 518 pertaining to the work of the school counselor. Senate Bill 158 relates to counseling students regarding higher education. Beginning in the 2001-2002 school year, Senate Bill 158 requires each counselor at an elementary, middle or junior high school, including an open-enrollment charter school offering those grades to advise students and their parents or guardians regarding the importance of higher education, coursework designed to prepare students for higher education, financial aid availability and requirements. Additionally, the high school counselor is required to provide information to a student and parents during the student's first year and senior year in high school regarding:

On the afternoon of Saturday, May 4, 2001, the cast of the Monadnock Regional High School production of "Ordinary People" gathered in the school auditorium in Swanzey, N.H., for its first dress rehearsal. Opening night was only four days away, and the mood was strained and occasionally hostile. The problem, most of the cast agreed, was an angry Greg Kochman, who played the lead role of Conrad, a suicidal teenager coping with the death of this older brother. Eric (left) was outgoing, popular, and mischevious. Greg (right) was more reserved and studious. Greg, then a junior at Monadnock, was in one of his moods. "He was so angry that week, and that day was the worst of it," recalls Christen Arrow, who played Conrad's mother in the play. "He would just lash out at people for no reason." Katherine Depew, who played Conrad's therapist in the play, had never heard Greg say the lines so well. "He said it static, monotone, and it was the best he had ever done. It was eerie." Theater, it seemed, was going to save him. "Greg loved the role of Conrad," recalls Casey Gallagher, then a Monadnock senior who considered Greg his best friend. "He needed that role. He was acting out what he felt for his brother."

Using a blend of powerful testimony, moving narrative, insightful analysis and practical advice , Bullycide: death at playtime validates the experience of being bullied at school and enables scars to heal, trauma to diminish, self-esteem to return and confidence to grow. The book reveals negative stereotypes ("weak", "sensitive" etc) to be projections of the bully's own weakness and inadequacy and that so-called "victim characteristics" are misperceptions of strengths to be valued and cherished. Click here for excerpts Bullycide: death at playtime gives families and children who have been driven to suicide by bullying a voice to enable the truth to be heard, sometimes for the first time. Around 5000 people commit suicide in the UK each year. Bullying causes psychiatric injury, a feature of which is reactive depression. Suicide is now the main cause of death for 18-24-year-old males in the UK.

Kathy Poole, whose son Torian committed suicide 5 years ago.
But for good friends Kathy Poole and Nayo Watkins, this popular view is dead wrong. Five years ago, Poole's 15-year-old son, Torian Graves, shot himself to death at their Durham home. Two years later, Watkins' 16-year-old son, Mekye Malcolm, hung himself from a tree on the campus of the Carolina Friends School in Chapel Hill. "The black community thinks of itself in a certain way," says Watkins, relaxing on a sofa across from Poole in the latter's den. A large quilt adorned with pictures and items of clothing worn by Poole's late son drapes the wall behind them. Watkins, an arts consultant and freelance writer, believes that African Americans have been imbued with a will to survive in the face of great suffering. This collective show of strength, she says, often prevents blacks from knowing how to talk about suicide. "We are trying to get people to talk about it," says Watkins, "to recognize it as a major problem in our community, and to look out for each other." Historically a group with a relatively low incidence of suicide, recent data on suicide rates for black youth point to a growing problem. According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control, the suicide rate among blacks in the United States aged 10 to 19 more than doubled between 1980 and 1995, and for the 10 to 14 age group the rate had tripled. By 1995, suicide had become the third leading cause of death among blacks aged 15 to 19. Although the CDC does not provide figures for North Carolina, it does report that, during the same 15-year period, the largest increase in suicide rates among black youth occurred in the South.

The Robbie Kirkland Story "I may be gone, but I hope I'm not forgotten. Remember me." By Robbie Kirkland On Jan. 2, 1997, my darling 14-year-old son, Robbie Kirkland committed suicide after a 4-year struggle to accept and find peace with his homosexuality. Our family loved, supported, and accepted him but could not protect him from the rejection and harassment he experienced at his Catholic schools or his overall perception of how society and religion view homosexuality. Robbie, my only son, was a very special and loving person. He was kind and sensitive with a witty sense of humor. He loved writing and had dreams of being a writer. At an early age Robbie was teased and harassed because he was noticeably different from the other boys. Robbie was soft spoken, gentle, creative, and disliked sports. Robbie made many efforts to fit in with the other boys such as participating in sports and pretending to have crushes on girls. It wasn't enough. He was still perceived as gay and encountered teasing and harassment, usually out of the teacher's view. Over a period of time, the effects of homophobia, he encountered at school, left him feeling ashamed, isolated, and insecure. He was not happy to be gay, knowing how much his Catholic schoolmates, society, and the Catholic doctrine rejected homosexuality. Once again we reassured him of our love, support, and acceptance. We, of course, canceled our AOL account.

Laura Rhodes, 13, from Neath, south Wales, died in September 2004 while a 14-year-old friend from Birmingham, who also took an overdose, survived. Laura's parents said she was unhappy after bullying about her weight and sexuality at Cefn Saeson School, Neath. But coroner David Osborne said the situation at the school was not the main cause of the suicide pact. The two-day inquest in Neath heard that Laura and her friend, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had met on the internet in September or October 2003 and had formed an "extremely close" relationship. 'Spur of moment' In August 2004, the two teenagers went on a two-week holiday to Crete with Laura's parents. A day after returning to south Wales, they ran away.
