Principles of Quality Screening Programs
... TeenScreen Community
Erie, PA School District Overview
Each year, more than 1,100 enrolled ninth graders in every high school in the school district of the city of Erie are offered a mental health check-up. Erie was the first TeenScreen site in the nation to offer district-wide screening.
History
In 2000, mental health advocates and school professionals from the Erie community became interested in the Columbia University TeenScreen Program after hearing it presented at a conference.
After training by Columbia University, the pilot Erie TeenScreen program was conducted at one high school where 108 ninth graders were screened over the course of seven days. By the end of the pilot, it was revealed that 87 percent of the students who were found in need through the Erie TeenScreen program had not been previously identified by school personnel, parents or healthcare professionals.
After completing the pilot, the Columbia University TeenScreen staff and the Erie School District immediately designed a proposal to offer the screen to every ninth-grade student in the district's four high schools. A plan of action was approved by the school board and quickly put in place. The Erie TeenScreen team carefully followed the procedures developed during the pilot. Parent permission is required for all screening. Screening groups were selected by homeroom to go to the school computer lab equipped with as many as 20 computers and a centralized printer. The Assistant/IT Project Coordinator handled setting up the computers and ensured that the lab was ready. Students then took the Diagnostic Predictive Scales (DPS), a computerized screening assessment.

We all have times when we feel sad or stressed. There are times when day to day problems get us down. However these feelings are usually short-lived. This is not depression! When doctors use the term "depression" they are talking about an ongoing serious situation in which a person feels down most of the time for a long period, weeks or months, and sometimes years. When this happens it makes it difficult to keep up with everyday things. Work, school and social life can all be affected. Depression has an impact on appetite, sleep and the ability to concentrate and think clearly. Depression is also called "depressive illness", "major depressive disorder", "dysthymia' or "clinical depression".

What causes people to want to take their own lives?
  • Because each person is unique, there is no single reason why people choose to end their lives. However, from research we know that there are several factors that may contribute to a person engaging in suicidal behaviour.
Mental disorder, most commonly depression, appears to be the most important risk factor for suicide and suicide attempts.
Research from the Canterbury Suicide Project in Christchurch has found that young people who have died by suicide, or who have made a serious suicide attempt, often have shared circumstances, such as:
    • they have some underlying psychological distress or mental illness they display some recognisable mental health or adjustment difficulty before the suicide attempt immediately before the suicide attempt they may face a severe stress or life crisis that often centres around the breakdown of an emotional or supportive relationship they tend to come from disturbed or unhappy family and childhood backgrounds they tend to come from socially and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.

It is important to distinguish between risk factors and risk prediction. Risk factors are usually studied in large populations as isolated factors. In contrast, risk prediction for individuals who may face complex, multifactorial problems cannot be achieved merely by adding up the risk factors derived from these population studies. However, an awareness of these risks can guide the development of appropriate and safe interventions. There are a number of risk factors that predispose people to suicide, including pre-existing psychiatric disorders, and both biological and psychosocial facilitating factors. Key risk factors include:
  • recent loss loved ones dying or committing suicide isolation previous attempts depression or bipolar disorder serious physical illness.

When Terrorists Strike: What School Counselors Can Do. ERIC Digest. by Juhnke, Gerald A. Terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, DC, and the continued threats of terrorism have the potential to engender negative psychological effects upon school age children and their families. School counselors and mental health professionals working with children need to be knowledgeable regarding interventions which allow students to openly discuss immediate and future concerns, cumulative stressors resulting from on-going terrorist threats, and post-terrorism psychopathology (e.g., anxiety, distress, etc.). This digest will familiarize readers with basic Critical Incident Stress Debriefings (CISD), outline the differences between CISD and the Adapted Family Debriefing Model for school students, and describe how mental health professionals can use this model as a post-terrorism response intervention. Source : ERIC Clearinghouse on Counseling and Personnel Services Ann Arbor MI. The Challenge of Counseling in Middle Schools. ERIC Digest. This digest deals with how counselors in middle schools can help youngsters face the various challenges of early adolescence. Counselors are called upon to plan programs that make middle schools inviting places for young people to learn and grow. There are major differences between middle schools and high schools, differences that cause some students to get lost emotionally and to fail academically. Middle school counseling programs need to focus on preparing youngsters for the increased independence of life in high school that is typically accompanied by more social pressures and by increased stress. THE CHALLENGE OF UNDERSTANDING SELF Early adolescence is difficult for most youngsters, a time for challenging one's self and the ideas brought from childhood. It is the beginning of physical, emotional, social, and intellectual growth which brings excitement, delight, anxiety, and misunderstanding. The child, who in elementary school was obedient and academically motivated, may seem disrespectful and lazy in middle school. Early adolescence begins the transition from acceptance of adult direction to challenging authority and moving toward self direction. The goal of middle school counselors is to provide a blend of challenge and support that will promote identity development in early adolescence.

Educators and students can exist in a more healthy living and learning environment by acknowledging the special needs of the grieving child. Foremost is the complex relationship between loss issues and a child's ability to function in and out of the classroom. The needs of the grieving child must be addressed in a new and fresh way within our school systems to create a safe haven for learning for our young people. Grief in the 'nineties Children's grief should be seen as an ongoing life process that is approachable through words, activities and non-verbal communication. Educators can use this understanding to create a safe environment for parents, teachers and children to acknowledge and process difficult feelings. So often adults rely on the prevailing myth that children are too young too grieve. When a child is capable of loving, he is capable of grieving. Yet many of today's children are born into a world of grief issues that await them inside their homes and outside their neighborhoods. Boys and girls are becoming increasingly traumatized by these prevailing social and societal loss issues in their homes, in their schools and in their communities. A major percentage of America's children face the loss of the protection of the adult world, as grief issues of homicide violence and abuse infiltrate their outer and inner worlds. Issues involving shame and secretiveness when death is caused by such occurrences as suicide and the contraction of AIDS create a grieving child that is locked into the pain of isolation - which can be far more damaging than the original loss.
