  • Most popular press articles suggest a link between the winter holidays and suicides (Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania 2003). However, this claim is just a myth. In fact, suicide rates in the United States are lowest in the winter and highest in the spring (CDC 1985, McCleary et al. 1991, Warren et al. 1983). Suicide took the lives of 30,622 people in 2001 (CDC 2004). Suicide rates are generally higher than the national average in the western states and lower in the eastern and midwestern states (CDC 1997). In 2002, 132,353 individuals were hospitalized following suicide attempts; 116,639 were treated in emergency departments and released (CDC 2004). In 2001, 55% of suicides were committed with a firearm (Anderson and Smith 2003).

Every year, 30,000 Americans take their own lives by committing suicide. At least 15% of people with depression complete the act of suicide, but an even higher proportion will attempt it. While depression is one of the most treatable mental disorders, it is also one of the most underdiagnosed and underrecognized. One of the scariest emotional experiences people suffer in their lifetime is to experience a severe form of depression. Over 1 in 5 Americans can expect to get some form of depression in their lifetime. Over 1 in 20 Americans have a depressive disorder every year. Depression is one of the most common and most serious mental health problems facing people today. Many people still carry the misperception that suicidal thoughts or behaviors are deserved that when a person has reached this point in their lives, there is no turning back. Nothing could be further from the truth. You can turn back. If you are thinking about suicide right now, you may want to visit this web page (

Suicide in Youth
Carol Watkins, MD According to the Surgeon General, a youth commits suicide every two hours in our country. In 1997, more adolescents died from suicide than AIDS, cancer, heart disease, birth defects and lung disease. Suicide claims more adolescents than any disease or natural cause. Adolescents now commit suicide at a higher rate than the national average of all ages. The rate of adolescent suicide in adolescent males has tripled between 1960 and 1980. Suicide rates for adolescent females have increased between two to three fold. There have been striking increases in suicidal behaviors among African American males, Native American males and children under 14. Much of the increase can be accounted for by deaths due to guns.

37. AJCongress On Muslim Decree Allowing For Women Suicide Bombers

Women May Not Drive a Car, but Can Blow Themselves Up:
AJCONGRESS CONDEMNS SAUDI RELIGIOUS DECREE
THAT WOMEN CAN SERVE AS SUICIDE BOMBERS;
CALLS ON RELIGIOUS LEADERS TO SPEAK OUT IN OPPOSITION
(August 7, 2001) American Jewish Congress Executive Director Phil Baum today called on Muslim and non-Muslim religious leaders to condemn the decree of the Saudi Arabia High Islamic Council that women can serve as suicide bombers. The full text of his statement is as follows: Saudi Arabia is so protective of its women that it requires them to be garbed from head to toe and severely restricts the kind of education they can receive and the work they can do. Women are not permitted to drive a car, but the Saudis now have declared that it is perfectly acceptable for women to blow themselves up as suicide bombers. The Saudi High Islamic Council gave its approval last week for women to become agents of death; already, a 23-year-old Palestinian mother of two was seized by Israeli security last week as she brought explosives to Tel Aviv's central bus station. Apparently, when it comes to killing Jews, nothing is off limits to segments of the Muslim world. With this edict, it is not enough for Muslim mothers to encourage their children to be suicide bombers and upon their death to praise them for their heroic and noble action; now, in addition, they are called upon themselves to set an example for their children.

40. Teen Suicide - AACAP Facts For Families # 10
Describes risk factors, symptoms and warning signs of suicide in adolescents/teens.
http://www.aacap.org/publications/factsfam/suicide.htm
T EEN S UICIDE No. 10 (Updated July 2004) Suicides among young people nationwide have increased dramatically in recent years. Each year in the U.S., thousands of teenagers commit suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for 15-to-24-year-olds, and the sixth leading cause of death for 5-to-14-year-olds. Teenagers experience strong feelings of stress, confusion, self-doubt, pressure to succeed, financial uncertainty, and other fears while growing up. For some teenagers, divorce, the formation of a new family with step-parents and step-siblings, or moving to a new community can be very unsettling and can intensify self-doubts. For some teens, suicide may appear to be a solution to their problems and stress. Depression and suicidal feelings are treatable mental disorders. The child or adolescent needs to have his or her illness recognized and diagnosed, and appropriate treatment plans developed. When parents are in doubt whether their child has a serious problem, a psychiatric examination can be very helpful. Many of the symptoms of suicidal feelings are similar to those of depression.
