Familiar examples include salmonellosis, ringworm, rabies and plague. In the last decade, public attention has focused on the potential transmission of diseases such as salmonellosis from reptiles to their owners. Less attention and risk are associated with small animals compared to imported reptiles. However, sometimes pet owners wonder if they can catch a disease from a pet such as a hamster or rat. A host of potential pathogens including bacteria, internal parasites and fungi can be transmitted between animals and people, although no parasitic protozoan diseases are likely to be acquired by pet owners from small animals.

Sugar Gliders Sugar Gliders are small arboreal marsupials from Australia and New Guinea. Like other marsupials, the females carry their young (joey) in a pouch. Adults weigh 4-6 ounces and measure about 12" from their nose to the tip of their tail. At least half of this length is tail! Sugar Gliders have a thin membrane that stretches from their wrists to their ankles. This allows them to glide from branch to branch like the American Flying Squirrel. They use their tails as a rudder while they travel and gather insects in flight. Their gliding distances have been documented up to 150 feet! Sugar Gliders make wonderful pets for the young and the young at heart! They adapt well to humans and develop strong relational bonds with their owners. They are communal animals that need and crave attention from you, the owner, or another Sugar Glider. How close your newly adopted pet bonds to you will depend on the time you spend together.

From: Timothy.L.Hussey.2@nd.edu (Tim Hussey) Newsgroups: rec.pets Subject: (3.1) What type of housing do Sugar Gliders require? Housing sugar gliders is relatively easy and, being clean animals, require relatively low maintenance. The cage, preferably, should be made of nothing smaller than 1" X .5" welded wire (so babies can't escape). A wire cage is practically a necessity, in order to give them plenty to climb around on. Many bird cages on the market today work great, but making your own may give you more space and be cheaper. The cage should be no smaller than 20" X 20" X 20". My cage is round 24" in diameter and 38" tall and easily accommodates my two gliders. Subject: (3.2) What do Sugar Gliders need to climb/play on? One requirement is the presence of live fruit tree branches. These serve two purposes first, they provide a natural environment for gliders to climb and keep their teeth healthy. Being arboreal, sugar gliders absolutely need branches to climb around on to be physical fit. Plus, it fun to watch them run around they are extremely coordinated and excellent climbers. Secondly, like other small animals, glider teeth never stop growing and they need something to gnaw on. However, unlike hamsters and bunnies, gliders won't touch anything artificial they want the real thing. The best thing to use are wild apple and sassafras branches. I have also been told that oak tree branches will also work. However, whatever you use DO NOT USE ANY BRANCH THAT HAS BEEN SPRAYED WITH PESTICIDES. In the wild, gliders chew the bark off trees looking for insects and sap, so the branches will keep them occupied while your not around.

From: Timothy.L.Hussey.2@nd.edu (Tim Hussey) Newsgroups: rec.pets Subject: (0.3) How to get this FAQ This FAQ can be found and obtained in the following 3 ways: -In the newsgroups rec.pets (posted monthly) -At http://www.nd.edu/~thussey/pets/gliders/faq/ -Mailing me at Timothy.L.Hussey.2@nd.edu and asking. The FAQ is in four parts, all of which should be available wherever this part was located. Each part is important in it's own way, and none should be completely overlooked. Subject: (0.4) The Format of this FAQ I have tried to adhere to digest format throughout this FAQ, in order to make it as easy to read as possible. Each question begins with a line of hyphens, followed by its number and the question itself. In many unix newsreaders, such as rn, trn, and strn, CONTROL-G can be used to jump to the next section. A particular section can accessed immediately by searching for its number or for words from the question. Also, cross-references to other questions are denoted through the use of square brackets; for example, [2.3] means that more information may be found on the noted topic in section 2.3. Subject: (0.6) Credits and Acknowledgements I would like to thank both Emily Rocke (Guinea Pig FAQ) and Brian MacNamara (Hedgehog FAQ) for all their help with my learning the FAQ-writing process, as well as the digest format. Exotic `Fad Pets' Need Special Care, So Do The Homework
    By KRISTEN LEVINE Tribune correspondent
    Published: Oct 2, 2004
Iguanas and hedgehogs and skunks, oh, my! Those critters and other exotic species make up about 9 percent of the American pet population, an American Pet Product Manufacturers Association survey says. But do they really make good pets? Before taking on an unusual pet, be sure to read up on its environmental and care needs. When such pets develop veterinary or behavioral problems, says Tampa veterinarian Teresa Lightfoot, it usually has something to do with their care. ``It's important for caretakers to be very knowledgeable about the animals native environment and attempt to mimic that in captivity,'' says Lightfoot, who is board certified in avian species. She also sees a variety of exotic species at Florida Veterinary Specialists in Tampa. Some exotics become ``fad pets'' that are popular for 10 to 15 years. Recent examples include potbellied pigs, sugar gliders, prairie dogs and hedgehogs. Not all of the more popular exotics make good companions in captivity.

Sugar gliders are intelligent beautiful animals. However, it is important for the prospective caregiver to remember that they are wild animals. Sugar gliders are not domesticated pets! Read more about the challenges and joys of caring for a glider colony here. What are the benefits and joys of keeping sugar gliders as pets? One of the most enjoyable aspects of caring for sugar gliders is being able to observe them at play. They will take treats from your hand, and because they themselves have tiny hands, it is especially fun to watch them hold things. Baby joeys will ride "piggyback" on their parents’ backs, which is always entertaining! They are intelligent animals with distinct personalities, and very social. Having a colony of sugar gliders is almost like a having a piece of the rainforest in your home. Describe the temperament and lifestyle of a typical sugar glider owner. That is, who would make a good owner of a sugar glider?
