Sugar Gliders Natural History The sugar glider is a small, nocturnal, arboreal marsupial native to New Guinea and the southern and eastern coasts of Australia. Being marsupials, the females raise their young in a pouch. Mature sugar gliders weigh 90 to 120 grams, with males typically larger than females. They are about five inches long from their nose to the base of their tail. The tail adds another six inches to their length, which is used as a rudder to navigate as they glide. Gliding distances are reported up to 150 feet. Being a nocturnal prey species, their eyes are large, protruding and widely spaced. Sugar gliders have four toes on their hind feet, with an opposable first digit and partial fusion of the second and third digit. Always transport an ill hedgehog in a small secure container that can be kept warm, particularly in cold climates. This little creature is a member of the same order that includes kangaroos, opossums, wombats and Tasmanian devils. The sugar glider can make a fascinating and unique pet since they are reasonably easy to care for; however, sugar gliders require more time than most small caged mammals and have some specialized needs. Sugar gliders are named for their preference for sweet foods and their ability to glide through the air like a flying squirrel. This gliding is made possible by a thin membrane of skin called a patagium that extends between their front and back legs. They can glide over 150 feet and use their long tails as rudders to control the direction of flight. Gliders have odd qualities, such as opposable fingers and toes, and very soft tongues. Like all marsupials, the female has a pouch in which the baby glider is carried. The sugar glider's head and body measures five to six inches with a bushy tail of equal length. The ears are constantly in motion, moving independently of one another to pick up the smallest sounds. The eyes are very large and dark and are oriented toward the sides of the head to allow a wider field of vision to help them hunt at night.
