Sufism: Sufi Quotes
Do not buy the enmity of one man for the love of a thousand men. Al Ghazzali (Essential Sufism) Illness itself is one of those forms of experience by which one arrives at the knowledge of God ...
It is, so to speak, the cord of love by which God draws to Himself the saints.
Al-Ghazzali Asking good questions is half of learning. Muhammad (Essential Sufism) A donkey with a load of holy books is still a donkey. Traditional (Essential Sufism) Whatever you have in your mind - forget it; Whatever you have in your hand - give it;
Whatever is to be your fate - face it! Abu Sa'id (Essential Sufism) For every sin but the killing of Time there is forgiveness. Traditional (Essential Sufism) If someone remarks: "What an excellent man you are!" and this pleases you more than his saying, "What a bad man you are!" know that you are still a bad man. Sufyan al Thawri (Essential Sufism) A seeker went to ask a sage for guidance on the Sufi way. The sage counseled, "if you have never trodden the path of love, go away and fall in love;
then come back and see us."

Love alone is capable of revealing the truth of Love and being a Lover. The way of our prophets is the way of Truth. If you want to live, die in Love; die in Love if you want to remain alive. I silently moaned so that for a hundred centuries to come,
hayhâ and hayhât, a corruption of the same term in Persian means 'alas' or 'woe to me!'
(Divan, 562:7) The name Mowlana Jalaluddin Rumi stands for Love and ecstatic flight into the infinite. Rumi is one of the great spiritual masters and poetical geniuses of mankind and was the founder of the Mawlawi Sufi order, a leading mystical brotherhood of Islam. Rumi was born in Wakhsh (Tajikistan) under the administration of Balkh in 30 September 1207 to a family of learned theologians. Escaping the Mongol invasion and destruction, Rumi and his family traveled extensively in the Muslim lands, performed pilgrimage to Mecca and finally settled in Konya, Anatolia, then part of Seljuk Empire. When his father Bahaduddin Valad passed away, Rumi succeeded his father in 1231 as professor in religious sciences. Rumi 24 years old, was an already accomplished scholar in religious and positive sciences.

Qur'an
The Qur'an is the primary text of Islam, revealed to the Prophet Muhammed beginning in the year 610 C.E. It was canonicalized between 644 and 656. The Qur'an is required reading for anyone who wants to understand Islam. Qur'an means "The Recital" in Arabic; according to the story, the angel Gabriel commanded Muhammed to "Recite!". Hypertext Qur'an This page links together all of the Qur'an versions at this site. Unicode Qur'an This is the Arabic text of Qur'an presented using Unicode . It is still a bit experimental and should not be considered authoritative. The Holy Qur'an: Arabic Text, Pronunciation Guide, Yusuf Ali English Text This is a merged version of the excellent Yusuf Ali English translation with transliterated Arabic and Arabic script presented using GIF image files. The Qur'an translated by E.H. Palmer [1880] (Sacred Books of the East, vol. 6 and 9) This version of the Palmer translation was prepared by an unknown editor prior to the inception of sacred-texts. It is missing the scholarly apparatus and has some differences with the printed version. A new etext of these books has been created and will be linked into the hypertext in the near future, at which point this version will be phased out.

The Sufi Conundrum
by Jay Kinney I can still recall the first time I ran into someone purporting to be a Sufi. I was visiting San Francisco in 1971 and had just met the long-haired printer who was publishing an underground comic that I was co-editing. He sported a worn denim jacket with a large winged heart embroidered on the back in the homespun fashion of the time. Having seen that symbol around before, I asked him what it stood for. "Sufism," he replied (or something to that effect), which led me to inquire about what that was. The gist of his response was that Sufis were proponents of love and he was a part of a local Sufi group that held "Sufi dancing" every week. "You oughta come," he opined. "It's a great place to meet chicks!" As it turned out I didn't go Sufi dancing, I didn't meet any Sufi "chicks," and my later relations with that printer were soon clouded by his deplorable business sense, all of which left me with an extremely confused notion of Sufism. A couple of years later, having now moved to San Francisco, I went to a reading by Allen Ginsberg which was preceded by a performance of the Sufi Choir, a Bay Area phenomenon of the time. Given their mixed repertoire and Marin hippie sartorial style, the Sufi Choir didn't ease my confusion about Sufism one bit. On the one hand I had heard that Sufis were Islamic mystics (though surely the printer with the denim jacket and the Sufi Choir didn't match that image); on the other hand I had read a short book by Sufi teacher Hazrat Inayat Khan that emphasized the unity of all religions. This sounded fine, but all the parts didn't fit into a coherent whole as far as I could tell.

SUFI AND DZOGCHEN REFLECTIONS
"I follow the Way of Love,
and where Love's caravan takes its path,
there is my religion, my faith."
Ibn 'Arabi "Saints and mystics throughout history have adorned their realisations with different names and given them different faces and interpretations, but what they are all fundamentally experiencing is the essential nature of the mind." Sogyal Rinpoche Sogyal Rinpoche, in his work The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying (1992), quotes from many of the world's Great Wisdom Traditions. Given the richness and radical insight of both Dzogchen and Sufism it is understandable that he chose to quote the Sufi mystic poet Jalaluddin Rumi: "O love, O pure deep love, be here, be now! Be all; worlds dissolve into your stainless endless radiance" (1992, p364). Like Dzogchen, Sufism uses exquisitely rich metaphors which Dzogchen practitioners may find both beautiful and insightful as they study the View. Through a sample of the ecstatic poetry from Fakhruddin 'Araqi's work, Divine Flashes (Lama'at), we hope such an opportunity is afforded. Both Dzogchen and Sufism are diamond-like Wisdom Teachings grounded in the Radical Primordial Reality. The goal of Sufism is to become the perfect mirror of the Formless through the purification of the heart. "In Sufism, as in most other authentic traditions, it is possible to become aware of the metaphysical transparency of forms and to be able to contemplate the One in the multifaceted manifold."

Man must not only be in contact with good; he must be in contact with a form of it which is capable of transforming his function and making him good. A donkey stabled in a library does not become literate. This argument is one of the differences between Sufi teaching and the attempted practice of ethic and self improvement in other endeavours. The point is generally neglected by the reader or student. Talib Kamal said: "The thread does not become enobled because it goes through the jewels." And: "My virtues have not improved me, any more than a desolate place is made fertile by the presence of a treasure."
