th century, more precisely in 1821, when forces of Khedive Mohammed Ali Pasha entered Sudan, European attention was attracted to the study of Sudan history. Travelers and researchers then started visiting Sudan and some wrote and documented their observations of sites and personal history of some prominent figures.
Religious Diversity in Sudan:
Islam and Christianity are the two major religions in Sudan. Islam is the religion of the majority of the Sudanese people, followed by Christianity and then the other local creeds. Islamic Sharia and customs are the sources of legislation and non-Muslims are governed by their own laws in personal issues. The law guarantees full freedom of worshipping and equality of all religions.
Entry of Islam in Sudan:
Traditional Beliefs:
As regards the religious beliefs of Ingassina and Medob, they are related to the sun. Ingassina tribesmen also practice fire flames. In Nuba Mountains area, we find the "Kujur" as one of the important religious beliefs. Nuba tribes believe in one God as a supreme power for them, the Kujur is a human being with a spirit of God inside him. The Kujur is used for calling for rain and his aid is sought against disease. These beliefs are still practiced in some areas of Sudan.
Sufi Sects:
The Sufi sects contributed to spreading Islam all over the Sudan. They also contributed to the removal of differences based on racial, tribal and social affiliations by the bond of the path of Allah.

The Republic of Sudan is the largest country in Africa with a land area of over 2.5 million km and an estimated population of 39 million. It is dominated by the River Nile and borders the Central African Republic, Chad, Libya, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The capital, Khartoum is situated at the confluence of the White Nile and Blue Nile. Its land borders total 7,687 km with a coastline on the Red Sea of 853 km. The enormous range of latitude means that there is great variation in climate. The north of the country is desert with little rainfall and high daily temperatures. The Red Sea coastal plain receives winter rain whilst the southern parts of the country receive rain from March to November. The terrain is generally flat and featureless with mountains in the far south, north-east and west. The land elevation is from sea level to the highest point Kinyeti at 3,187 m close to the Uganda border. The official language is Arabic and some English is spoken. More details can be found at

Northeast Sudan, called Nubia in ancient times, was colonized by Egypt about 2000 BC and was ruled by the Cush kingdom from the 8th cent. BC to the 4th cent AD Most of Nubia was converted to Coptic Christianity in the 6th cent., but by the 15th cent. Islam prevailed. In 1821 the north was conquered by Egypt, but a revolt by the nationalist Mahdi in 1881 forced an Egyptian withdrawal. In the 1890s an Anglo-Egyptian force under Herbert Kitchener destroyed the theocratic Mahdist state, and in 1899 most of Sudan came under the joint rule of Egypt and Britain (with Britain exercising actual control). Independence was achieved in 1956. In 1955 the animist southerners, fearing that the new nation would be dominated by the Muslim north, began a civil war that lasted 17 years. In 1972 Pres. Muhammad Gaafar al-Nimeiry ended the war by granting the south a measure of autonomy. However, his imposition of Islamic law on the entire country in 1983 reopened the conflict, and close to 2 million have died since, many from starvation. Nimeiry was deposed by a military coup in 1986. A short-lived civilian government was overthrown in 1989 by Lt. Gen. Omar Hassan al-Bashir; he officially became president in 1993 and was elected to the post in 1996. Bashir's government reinstituted Islamic law, banned opposition parties, and jailed dissidents. Throughout the 1990s the army mounted offensives against the rebels in S Sudan; several cease-fires were announced to allow the distribution of food to famine victims, but they did not hold. In recent years Sudan has supported Muslim fundamentalists internationally.

Geographical Regions
Northern Sudan, lying between the Egyptian border and Khartoum, has two distinct parts, the desert and the Nile Valley. To the east of the Nile lies the Nubian Desert; to the west, the Libyan Desert. They are similarstony, with sandy dunes drifting over the landscape. There is virtually no rainfall in these deserts, and in the Nubian Desert there are no oases. In the west there are a few small watering holes, such as Bir an Natrun, where the water table reaches the surface to form wells that provide water for nomads, caravans, and administrative patrols, although insufficient to support an oasis and inadequate to provide for a settled population. Flowing through the desert is the Nile Valley, whose alluvial strip of habitable land is no more than two kilometers wide and whose productivity depends on the annual flood. Western Sudan is a generic term describing the regions known as Darfur and Kurdufan that comprise 850,000 square kilometers. Traditionally, this has been regarded as a single regional unit despite the physical differences. The dominant feature throughout this immense area is the absence of perennial streams; thus, people and animals must remain within reach of permanent wells. Consequently, the population is sparse and unevenly distributed. Western Darfur is an undulating plain dominated by the volcanic massif of Jabal Marrah towering 900 meters above the Sudanic plain; the drainage from Jabal Marrah onto the plain can support a settled population. Western Darfur stands in stark contrast to northern and eastern Darfur, which are semidesert with little water either from the intermittent streams known as wadis or from wells that normally go dry during the winter months. Northwest of Darfur and continuing into Chad lies the unusual region called the
