GEOGRAPHY
Sudan Table of Contents Sudan is Africa's largest country, embracing 2,505,813 square kilometers of northeast and central Africa. It consists of a huge plain bordered on three sides by mountains: to the east the Red Sea Hills, to the west Jabal Marrah, and on the southern frontier the Didinga Hills and the Dongotona and Imatong mountains. Jutting up abruptly in the south-central region of this vast plain are the isolated Nuba Mountains and Ingessana Hills, and far to the southeast, the lone Boma Plateau near the Ethiopian border. Spanning eighteen degrees of latitude, the plain of the Sudan includes from north to south significant regions with distinctive charactersnorthern Sudan, western Sudan, the central clay plains, eastern Sudan, the southern clay plains, and the Jabal Hadid, or Ironstone Plateau, and southern hill masses.
Geographical Regions
Northern Sudan, lying between the Egyptian border and Khartoum, has two distinct parts, the desert and the Nile Valley. To the east of the Nile lies the Nubian Desert; to the west, the Libyan Desert. They are similarstony, with sandy dunes drifting over the landscape. There is virtually no rainfall in these deserts, and in the Nubian Desert there are no oases. In the west there are a few small watering holes, such as Bir an Natrun, where the water table reaches the surface to form wells that provide water for nomads, caravans, and administrative patrols, although insufficient to support an oasis and inadequate to provide for a settled population. Flowing through the desert is the Nile Valley, whose alluvial strip of habitable land is no more than two kilometers wide and whose productivity depends on the annual flood.

The country is mostly a vast plain, broken by several mountain ranges; the Jebel Marra in western Sudan is the highest range, but the highest mountain is Mount Kinyeti Imatong, near the border with Uganda. The Blue and White Niles meet in Khartoum to form the Nile, which flows northwards through Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea.

In the northern and western semi-desert areas people rely on the scant rainfall for basic agriculture and many are nomadic, traveling with their herds of sheep and camels. Nearer the Nile, there are well-irrigated farms growing cash-crops.

During 1984/85, there was a severe drought and crop-failure in the west of the country, which came to world-wide attention through media coverage and the Band Aid fund-raising initiative.

Country List World Factbook Home The World Factbook Sudan Introduction Sudan Background: Military regimes favoring Islamic-oriented governments have dominated national politics since independence from the UK in 1956. Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war for all but 10 years since then. The war is rooted in northern economic, political, and social domination of non-Muslim, non-Arab southern Sudanese. Since 1983, the war and war- and famine-related effects have resulted in more than 2 million deaths and over 4 million people displaced. The ruling regime is a mixture of military elite and an Islamist party that came to power in a 1989 coup. Some northern opposition parties have made common cause with the southern rebels and entered the war as part of an anti-government alliance. Peace talks gained momentum in 2002-03 with the signing of several accords, including a cease-fire agreement. The Republic of Sudan, Africa's largest country, borders the Red Sea and nine other nations. Its landscape changes from desert in the north, through a central belt of grassy plains and swamps, to a lush tropical south. < BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS Tomb of the Mahdi in Omdurman THROUGHOUT ITS HISTORY SUDAN has been divided between its Arab heritage, identified with northern Sudan, and its African heritages to the south. The two groups are divided along linguistic, religious, racial, and economic lines, and the cleavage has generated ethnic tensions and clashes. Moreover, the geographical isolation of Sudan's southern African peoples has prevented them from participating fully in the country's political, economic, and social life. Imperial Britain acknowledged the north-south division by establishing separate administrations for the two regions. Independent Sudan further reinforced this cleavage by treating African southerners as a minority group. Another major factor that has affected Sudan's evolution is the country's relationship with Egypt. As early as the eighth millennium B.C., there was contact between Sudan and Egypt. Modern relations between the two countries began in 1820, when an Egyptian army under Ottoman command invaded Sudan. In the years following this invasion, Egypt expanded its area of control in Sudan down the Red Sea coast and toward East Africa's Great Lakes region. The sixty-four-year period of Egyptian rule, which ended in 1885, left a deep mark on Sudan's political and economic systems. The emergence of the Anglo-Egyptian condominium in 1899 reinforced the links between Cairo and Khartoum. After Sudan gained independence in 1956, Egypt continued to exert influence over developments in Sudan.

Nile Proper . This mighty river flows northward through Sudan and Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. Map Credit
To the south, tropical lakes of Central Africa feed the Nile river. Emanating from Lake Victoria (3720 feet), the Nile flows through Lake Albert (2030 feet) of western Uganda, and northward through southern Sudan as the Mountain Nile to Lake No. Here several smaller tributaries join the river forming the White Nile which flows quietly through the grassy plains of central Sudan to Khartoum.
The Blue Nile drains the high mountains (13,000+ feet) of Ethiopia, with the help of the Atbara River, which flows into the Nile approximately 150 miles north of Khartoum. These two rivers carry rocky debris that eventually forms the fine stone dust known to comprise the black mud of the Nile.
Below (north of) Khartoum the Upper Nile Aswan (also Assuan ), forms the natural southern boundary of Egypt.
Throughout its length, rocky walls, sometimes 600 to 800 feet tall, flank either side of the valley containing the Nile. This valley never exceeds five to nine miles in width throughout the Sudan but broadens past Aswan reaching widths of up to thirty-three miles. Near Gebel Silsileh, about thirty miles north of Aswan, the Sudanese sandstone gives way to limestone. The limestone forms cliffs along the Lower Nile for nearly 475 miles to the Delta
The cliffs reach high, table-like plateaus that are surrounded by sand from the nearby deserts. The Libyan Desert, the northeastern part of the Sahara, borders the Nile to the west. To the east, the limestone plateau skirts the Arabian Desert which parallels high mountains further east. Primarily granite and gneiss, these mountains border the Red Sea and rise to heights of 6000 feet or more.

    Geography and climate
Sudan is the largest country in Africa (about ten times the size of the UK). The Dinka and Nuer live in an area about twice the size of the UK, in the band of country that stretches between Zaire in the West and Ethiopia in the East, from around the level where the White Nile is joined by the rivers Bar el Ghazal and Sobat, south to the rising land that borders Uganda and the Central African Republic. The population of southern Sudan is only about 5 million; the same as Scotland. South Sudan is a land of swamps and open savannah. The swamps of southern Sudan are the largest in the world and are formed when the waters of the White Nile and its tributaries flow down from the highlands of Ethiopia, Uganda and the Central African Republic into the low clay basin that forms much of southern Sudan. The swamps swell with the torrential rain that inundates the area between May and September, then recede gradually during the dry season. From this vast reservoir, the White Nile moves sluggishly north on its long journey up towards Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, where it is joined by the Blue Nile, on into Egypt, and eventually to the Mediterranean Sea. The swamps of southern Sudan abound with an enormous variety of birds. Indeed with its big views and huge skies, the whole area is unusually beautiful.
