of Sudan Background:
Problems began for the new republic almost immediately, in the shape of conflict between north and south. Carefully isolated from one another under British rule, the vast cultural differences between these two regions now escalated rapidly, and civil war was imminent.
A military coup, led by General Ibrahim Abboud, overthrew the government in 1958. Parliament was dismissed and martial law was declared, with Abboud as self-proclaimed Prime Minister.
Another coup in 1969, led this time by Colonel Jafaar Mohammed al-Nimeiry, set up government under a revolutionary council. Nimeiry became the Sudan's first elected President in 1972, and signed the Addis Ababa agreement, in an attempt to end strife between north and south. Uneasy peace was maintained for almost a decade and in 1983, Nimeiry was re-elected for a third term of office. His policies for economic recovery were ineffective, however, and unrest grew once more, resulting in Nimeiry's deposition in a bloodless coup in April 1985.
A year of military rule followed, before the rise of a new Mahdi. This was Sadiq al-Mahdi, the great-grandson of Mohammed Ahmad, but, despite many lofty promises of democracy, the new government proved weak and al-Mahdi was deposed in 1989.

April 2002 The takeover of the National Islamic Front government in 1989, and its drive to Islamize a country that is only partly Moslem, has not only led to massive killing, starvation displacement , and pauperization of the Dinka and Nuba populations in southern Sudan. There also has been a systematic drive to eliminate their religions, languages, legal systems, and customs. I believe we need to broaden our theoretical framework beyond the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide to include the concept of what I describe as "cultural genocide." The original draft of the Convention contained a more inclusive definition of genocide: "the destruction of the specific character of the persecuted `group’ by forced transfer of children, forced exile

PRAYER PROFILE
The Sudanese Arabs
A cluster of 7 groups in 7 different countries. The Sudanese Arabs originated in the Khartoum region of Sudan many centuries ago. Today, they live primarily in northern and central Sudan , and in Egypt . A few groups are also scattered in Saudi Arabia Ethiopia Libya Yemen , and the United Arab Emirates The first "pure" Arabs were called " Bedouins ." They were tribal nomads from Saudi Arabia, famous for their love of poetry and war. The Sudanese are a tribe who branched off of the Bedouins. They are a heterogeneous people with a mixture of diverse blood and cultures. Their native language is called Sudani or Khartoum Arabic, and is a dialect of Arabic. The ability to speak Arabic, or one of its dialects, has long been a unifying factor among the Arab people. The fact that most Arabs are Muslims has also served to unify them. The Islamic religion, which developed during the seventh century, gave the Arab-speaking villagers and the nomadic Bedouins common ground. Over the centuries, Arab Muslims have traveled across the Middle East and North Africa, spreading Islam to all who would accept it. What are their lives?

Northeast Sudan, called Nubia in ancient times, was colonized by Egypt about 2000 BC and was ruled by the Cush kingdom from the 8th cent. BC to the 4th cent AD Most of Nubia was converted to Coptic Christianity in the 6th cent., but by the 15th cent. Islam prevailed. In 1821 the north was conquered by Egypt, but a revolt by the nationalist Mahdi in 1881 forced an Egyptian withdrawal. In the 1890s an Anglo-Egyptian force under Herbert Kitchener destroyed the theocratic Mahdist state, and in 1899 most of Sudan came under the joint rule of Egypt and Britain (with Britain exercising actual control). Independence was achieved in 1956. In 1955 the animist southerners, fearing that the new nation would be dominated by the Muslim north, began a civil war that lasted 17 years. In 1972 Pres. Muhammad Gaafar al-Nimeiry ended the war by granting the south a measure of autonomy. However, his imposition of Islamic law on the entire country in 1983 reopened the conflict, and close to 2 million have died since, many from starvation. Nimeiry was deposed by a military coup in 1986. A short-lived civilian government was overthrown in 1989 by Lt. Gen. Omar Hassan al-Bashir; he officially became president in 1993 and was elected to the post in 1996. Bashir's government reinstituted Islamic law, banned opposition parties, and jailed dissidents. Throughout the 1990s the army mounted offensives against the rebels in S Sudan; several cease-fires were announced to allow the distribution of food to famine victims, but they did not hold. In recent years Sudan has supported Muslim fundamentalists internationally.

Developing the Collection
Page 3 of 5 N ew acquisitions significantly enhance our understanding of objects already in the collection and of ancient Egyptian culture. The collection of the Department of Ancient Egypt and the Sudan amounts to over 110,000 objects. Most pieces entered the collection through two principal routes: private collectors in the 19th century, and early 20th century excavations. The collection continues to grow, however, principally through the division of finds courtesy of the Sudanese government, and the purchase of objects from old private collections. The Museum adheres to the UNESCO treaty of 1970, and will not consider objects that left Egypt after that date. New acquisitions can significantly enhance our understanding of other artefacts in the collection, and can also increase its breadth and coverage of ancient Egyptian culture. The following objects exhibit the range of objects and their different histories.

War has been a fact of life in Sudan for several generations. The country has seen only eleven years of peace since 1956. More than 2 million people have died in the conflict between the Islamic government in the north and black tribes of the south. Fueling the hostilities is up to a billion barrels of crude oil, waiting to be tapped under the disputed land. The people remain desperately poor and even the most basic infrastucture has been destroyed. On January 9th 2005 the north and south signed a long awaited breakthrough peace accord, but at the same time, similar violence continues in Darfur in the west of the country. In both areas, the vulnerable population depends on foreign aid organizations for their basic needs. var imageName = ''; document.write(imageName); document.write(captionList[1]);

Displacement as Translation: A Tale of Three Audiences
Rebecca Lorins
University of Texas at Austin In this paper, I will discuss the performances and practices of the Kwoto Cultural Center as a strategy of translation. Although the Center's primary audience consists of displaced southerners in Khartoum, they acknowledge a series of other audiences: northern Sudanese, diaspora Sudanese, and funders, sponsors and supporters abroad. This paper focuses particularly on the tension that exists between the work and its message as it is performed for indigenous audiences and as it is translated for the international circuit. Although I agree with recent calls by scholars for more precise applications of the term "displaced" and "displacement (Assal 2000; El Shazali 1995), I am more interested in this paper in when, how and why the term gets deployed amongst southerners in Khartoum, as both a mode of self-definition and a means toward self-determination. When do performances seek the city as "home" and when is "displacement" invoked? I argue that the employment of the vocabulary of "displacement" can be a means of entering, becoming visible to, and gaining currency in, ongoing international conversations

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Heather J. Sharkey. Living With Colonialism: Nationalism and Culture in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Berkeley: University of California Press, 2003. xiii + 232 pp. Map. Glossary. Bibliography. Index. $24.95. Paper. This well-researched volume greatly illuminates our understanding of the modern Sudan and of the political, social, cultural, and religious forces that helped to forge it during the colonial era. Created as the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan in 1898 out of the ruins of a Turco-Egyptian sphere of influence and the theocratic Mahdist state, this vast territory was in principle a condominium jointly administered by Great Britain and Egypt. In reality, however, the Sudan was uniquely administered by the British. Yet, as Sharkey notes, the fiction of joint administration was maintained not only through the use of the term condominium, but also by placing the Sudan under the Foreign Office, not the Colonial Office, and by creating a separate Sudan civil service.

    Main article: History of Sudan Religious leader Muhammad ibn Abdalla, the self-proclaimed Mahdi ( Messiah ), attempted to unify the tribes of western and central Sudan against the British Empire . He led a nationalist revolt culminating in the fall of Khartoum in 1885, in which the British General Charles George Gordon was killed. The Mahdist state survived until overwhelmed by an Anglo-Egyptian force under Lord Horatio Kitchener in 1898. Independence was achieved in 1956, but the Arab-led Khartoum government reneged on promises to southerners to create a federal system, which led to a mutiny by southern army officers that sparked 17 years of civil war from 1955 to 1972.
