November 17: Sudan's main labour federation is calling on workers to toil an extra two hours a day from next Saturday in protest against sweeping US trade and economic sanctions. In a weekend meeting, the Sudan Workers Trade Unions Federation said that by extending the six-hour working day, Sudanese workers could express their determination to upgrade production in the face of the US sanctions. Sudanese President Omar el-Bashir said yesterday his country would boycott the US dollar in trading transactions in reprisal for the recent United States trade and economic sanctions against Sudan. The Sudanese Parliament has urged the military-backed government to ban US aid organisations in Sudan. The Parliament's move on Tuesday was the latest in a series of protests against the US decision to tighten sanctions against the government which Washington accuses of sponsoring terrorism. The Ugandan army is building up its forces along its border with Sudan to springboard attacks by the SPLA of John Garang, a Sudanese military official has said. General Mohamed Abdallah Oweidah, chairman of the Sudanese parliament's defence committee, described the build up as "a means for backing the Garang movement in operations it is planning to launch".

    Introduction
Situated in northeast Africa, the Sudan is the largest country on the continent. It is bordered with Egypt to the north, Ethiopia and Eritrea to the southeast, Kenya, Uganda and Zaire to the south, the Central Africa Republic and Chad to the west and Libya to the northwest.
The greatest part of Sudan is vast plain traversed by the northward flowing Nile River and its tributaries. Widely separated mountain chains and many hilly areas reach a maximum altitude of 7,000ft. The northern area is mainly desert, with rock at or near the surface covered by thin soils of low fertility. The western undulating sandy wastes merge into the Red Sea Hills to the east.

      Sudanese Customs:
The Sudan is MINIATURE REPRESENTATION of Africa: a large country with geographic, extremes ranging from sandy desert to tropical forest. It has about 600 tribes who have Arabic as their common language, beside there are about 142 different languages. The cuisine is a melding of the many varied backgrounds of the people who live in the Sudan's land. The ritual of hospitality is as important in the Sudan as it is in other Arab and African countries. And while there is a measure of similarity in all the Arab and African countries, each has its unique characteristics. For example , no other country prepares coffee as the Sudanese do, and if this country acquired culinary fame, it is for its Sudanese Jebena (Special made Sudanese Coffee). How the Sudanese make their Coffe!!!

Sudan's civil war closes in on ancient Nubian culture
May 20, 1998 Web posted at: 4:58 p.m. EDT (2058 GMT) From Correspondent Catherine Bond NUBA MOUNTAINS, North Sudan (CNN) For 14 years, the civil war in Sudan has driven people from the fertile Nuba mountains towards either garrison towns or the refuge of rebel-held areas nearby. A famine now looms for the Nubians, one of Africa's oldest cultures, whose people have lived isolated in a northern region of the country for decades. "We need some relief to come because we don't have enough to eat and we don't want to go back to the Arabs," said Nubian Musa Elbende . "We want to stay in the mountains. We don't want to join with the government in Khartoum." Though a resilient and self-reliant people, they face depleted grain surpluses and many have been displaced by government attacks. For almost 15 years, the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and other rebel factions have been fighting the government in Khartoum. The rebels want autonomy for the mainly Christian south from the Muslim north. Cut off from even basic necessities , many villagers have been forced to leave
