Country Info Sudan Introduction Sudan General Data Sudan Maps Sudan Culture ... Sudan Time and Date Sudan Culture Back to Top The Sudanese of the south are of African origin. Islam has made only modest inroads among these followers of orthodox religions and of Christianity, which was spread in the twentieth century by European missionaries, and Arabic has not replaced the various languages of the south. The strong regional and cultural differences have inhibited nation building and have caused the civil war in the south that has raged since freedom, except for a time of peace between 1972 and 1983. The distrust between Sudanese of the north and those of the southwhether elite or peasantshas deepened with the long years of hostilities. And the cost of war has drained valuable national resources at the expense of health, education, and welfare in both regions.

Sudan Africa
CULTURE Sudan is a miniature representation of Africa: a large country with geographic, extremes ranging from sandy desert to tropical forest. It has about 600 tribes who have Arabic as their common language, beside there are about 142 different languages. The cuisine is a melding of the many varied backgrounds of the people who live in the Sudan's land. The ritual of hospitality is as important in the Sudan as it is in other Arab and African countries. And while there is a measure of similarity in all the Arab and African countries, each has its unique characteristics. For example, no other country prepares coffee as the Sudanese do, and if this country acquired culinary fame, it is for its Sudanese Jebena (Special made Sudanese Coffee). The Sudanese fry their coffee beans in a special pot over charcoal and then grind it with cloves and certain spices. They steep it in hot water and serve it lovingly in tiny coffee cups after straining it through a special tresh grass sieve.

Local resistance at this time was led by Mahdi Mohammed Ahmed, a figure revered by his people as both a mystic and a holy warrior. The so-called Mahdists defeated a British-led force of Egyptian troops in 1883. This culminated in the death of the British commander, General Gordon, when the Sudanese took Khartoum after a long siege. The Mahdists retained control of Sudan until the British re-conquered the territory in 1898. An Anglo-Egyptian condominium was established in 1899. In 1914, Egypt itself was made a British protectorate and Sudan was accordingly taken under British rule. When the protectorate was dissolved in 1922, the future of Sudan was left open, as a subject of further negotiations. In 1929, the condominium was restored. In May 1969, the civilian government of Mohammed Ahmed Mahgoub, which had been elected after the fall of the Abboud regime in 1964, was itself deposed in a military coup that installed Jafaar al-Nimeri as president. Nimeri negotiated a settlement with the south in 1972. When the settlement collapsed in 1983, it signalled the beginning of the end for Nimeri himself. The main cause was the introduction of Islamic Sharia law, intended to placate increasingly troublesome Muslim elements complaining about the austerity program introduced on the instruction of the IMF earlier in the year. Not surprisingly, it was not well received in the south either and was later withdrawn.

Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery are giving residents the opportunity tosee the exotic work of artist Medina Hammad at an exhibition of vibrantpaintings following her recent visit to Sudan. There will also be an opportunity for students and young people ver 15 yearsold to talk to Medina about her work at a special exhibition evening on Thursday4 May 2000 at 7pm Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery has been given an 'Artworks' award tostage the exhibition evening and special workshops for schools. Medina is the daughter of an English mother and a Sudanese father and herfeelings as an outsider to both cultures led to these paintings which exploreher Sudanese roots. Medina's childhood home in England was filled withmysterious exotic objects from Sudan; some of these objects are displayed in theexhibition and feature in the paintings. Other paintings are based on ancientSudanese secret rituals that Medina witnessed on her visit and a series ofdrawings tell stories from the Arabian Nights. Maggie Warren, Visual Arts Officer for Peterborough City Council, said:"The paintings fill the gallery with colour, light and movement. I'm surevisitors will find them exciting. The exhibition, which is from the UsherGallery in Lincoln, is accompanied by information telling visitors thebackground behind the works".

Tribes of Liberia
  • Background
Many consider the Gola to be earliest tribe to inhabit Liberia, but the Gola themselves claim they met the Dei ethnic group there when they arrived. The Dei ethnic group are a vanguard group of Bassa that settled Liberia in waves. The ethnic groups of Liberia can be divided into five major groups:
  • Mel (Gola, Kissi) Kwa (Dei, Bassa, Kru, Krahn, Grebo) Mande-Fu (Kpelle, Gio, Mano, Loma) Mande-Tan (Vai, Mende, Mandingo) Repatriated (Americo-Liberians, Congo, Caribbean)

The history of most of these ethnic groups spans over thousands of years.
The Dei would settle first and would later be joined by the Gola ethinc group before any of the other Bassa groups arrived. The Gola ethnic group originated somewhere in Central-Africa. During the Empire of Ancient Ghana they were heavily involved in the land-surveying and judicial aspects of the empire. The other ethnic groups that fall under the Mande-Tan, Mande-Fu were also members of Ancient Ghana. Because of the their influence in the judicial aspects of the Ghana, the Gola's social structure dominated through the Poro. With the influx of Islam many groups adopted while others resisted. The Golas fought three wars with pro-Islamic elements in a changing Ghana. These wars were known as the Kumba wars. The Golas lost the third of these wars and were forced to retreat toward, Sierra Leone. They were pursued by the Mende, Gbandi and Loma. Their battles with the Mende in Sierra Leone forced them to retreat yet again and settle finally in Liberia where they encountered the Dei.
