After all, the Washington, D.C. , Metro subway system was one of the first to use magnetic-strip farecard technology that has become a standard in many metropolitan areas, including San Francisco, Chicago, London and New South Wales, Australia. Public transit riders in the capital region will now be the first to use one farecard to pay for subway rides, bus trips and also for parking at rail stations. If the test is successful and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority decides to install the technology at all its facilities, Washington could be the first city in the world with an intermodal smart-card system. The cards will be used during a one-year trial period starting in Feb. 1995. Approximately 1,000 patrons will put the smart cards, also called proximity cards, to the test. The DoT's Federal Transit Administration is supporting the experiment with a $1 million grant.

Levels are often sited in a variety of geographic locations, which provide a context and background for game play. In his book Delirious New York , Rem Koolhaas suggests that Manhattan is part of a project "to exist in a world totally fabricated by man, i.e. to live inside fantasy." This makes Manhattan a particularly appropriate study for games and level design. Games need to have a strong narrative to make sense, but they also need to have a strong and structured environment to reinforce that. Whether real locations or abstract patterns, formal constraints and ordering devices for levels can be drawn from different sources. Primarily, it is a matter of looking at our immediate surroundings and thinking about how to reinterpret them for games. The first reaction to the problem was to immediately commit to paper a visual plan, bypassing important stages of the design process such as research, planning and analysis of usage. It soon became apparent that design must be approached as a multi-stepped process of planning, research and implementation that cannot be abbreviated. An outline of the design problem must be formulated early, and a detailed record of existing circumstances and particular data must be collected. This preliminary stage involves brainstorming and creative thinking, and the nail result is an organized logical flow of information (material) in the form of a plan of action including the following five stages: 1. planning, 2. preliminary design, 3. nail design, 4. technical drawings, 5. supervision of fabrication and installation. Chanin School of Architecture pursue a Studio Thesis that is an individual expression of the ideas that inspire the architect in their production of architecture and form the basis of her/his self-criticism. During the Fall Semester, students participate in a Thesis Preparation studio which establishes the initial basis for the critical discussions that surround a work of architecture. As Professor Lebbeus Woods has stated, this preparatory studio is intended as a "collaborative exploration of issues and ideas that can be the basis of diverse individual theses." This project focuses on a complex urban and cultural condition through two stages; documentation and analysis of the condition; and the construction of an analogical construction which is designed from the analysis of this condition. This architectural condition is made of differing elements that are interrelated and interdependent, encouraging diverse approaches and interpretations by the students. It is important that the condition is not mired in intractable social and political debates that prevent students from addressing it openly, for this reason the condition must be embedded in the present urban and social context, yet at the same time detached from it.

Widom, FAIA , of Santa Monica for his contributions to the AIA and the profession, and to the renowned photographer and recorder of modern architecture, Julius Shulman Honor Awards One of the six projects receiving an honor award was the South Coast Plaza Pedestrian Bridge, a collaboration between architects Ellerbe Becket , landscape architects Anderson and Ray, and environmental artist Kathryn Gustafson. The "bridge of gardens" connects two shopping complexes. Constructed of stainless and galvanized steel, with a partially covered canopy, the curving three-story, 600-foot- (183-meter-) long bridge was designed to suggest a winged bird in flight. The design jury liked the garden terrace aspect of the structure and commented that the landscaping across the top of a roadway was "powerful, interesting, and unique." Another honor award went to the San Francisco office of Ellerbe Becket for the Metro Red Line Vermont/Santa Monica Station, which was designed by architect Mehrdad Yazdani, now of the Los Angeles firm Cannon Dworsky. This station, part of the expanding subway system in Los Angeles, consists of an urban transit plaza and subterranean ticketing mezzanine and train platform.

More Securing Our Subways By Michael Chertoff Friday, July 29, 2005; Page A23 In the past couple of weeks we have seen four major terrorist attacks on soft targets in civilian areas: two attacks on mass transit in London; an attack on a shopping mall in Netanya, Israel; and an attack on hotels and resorts in Egypt. The events are a tragic reminder of the dangers we face, the tactics of our enemies and the need for more preparedness. Every act of terrorism is unforgivable, and any life taken by terrorists is an irreparable loss. This is why we have gone to great lengths as a nation since Sept. 11 to provide law enforcement and intelligence personnel with enhanced tools and information to better identify, track and apprehend terrorists before they are able to strike. We have also made significant progress since last year's bombings in Madrid in securing our mass transit systems. State and local authorities have received more than $8 billion in Homeland Security Department grants that can be used for mass transit security, and President Bush has proposed an additional $2.4 billion in his 2006 budget. The federal government has chipped in more than $255 million for state and local transit authorities to increase protection through hardening of assets, greater police presence during high alerts, additional detection and surveillance equipment, increased inspections, and expanded use of explosives-sniffing dog teams.
