Substitute teachers may get more pay
County public school leaders are proposing a daily rate increase of 17 to 18 percent.
By REBECCA CATALANELLO, Times Staff Writer Published August 12, 2005 Teachers aren't the only ones in demand in Pasco County. The people who fill in for teachers are pretty darn popular, too. In an effort to woo more substitute teachers into Pasco's public classrooms, school leaders are proposing offering them a little more dough. Substitute teachers could see their daily rate of pay increase 17 to 18 percent to $55 or $65, depending on their educational credentials. Long-term subs - those who substitute for at least 11 consecutive days - could make $85 per day, up $3 from the current rate. And retired Pasco County teachers willing to substitute could get even more: a $10-per-day bonus on top of the regular pay rate.

Though they're counted on to teach thousands of schoolchildren each day, many say they often feel like they're taken for granted and treated as second-class citizens. A recent pay cut, new expenses for mandatory training sessions and other concerns have prompted some substitutes to sue the Department of Education and push for union representation. Hawai'i substitutes warn that schools here can't always properly cover for absent teachers, and that a shortage of substitutes is growing and can only worsen under new DOE conditions and the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

By ARA Content, 11/30/2002 Let's have a cheer for America's substitute teachers if you can find one.
On any given school day, one in every 10 classrooms needs a substitute teacher, according to The Substitute Teaching Institute at Utah State University. The nationwide shortage of teachers, including substitutes, has many schools scrambling to fill these classrooms.
"I have been a superintendent of schools for more than 20 years, and I can attest to the fact that finding qualified substitute teachers is a time-consuming, and sometimes frustrating, task," said Dr. Edward Favolise, superintendent of Ansonia Public Schools in Connecticut.
