Substitute teachers provide a valuable service to our students and schools. They are "day-to-day" employees who can decide which days they want to work and in which schools they want to accept assignments. Since substitute teachers follow the school calendar, there is no expectation of employment during school holiday, breaks, or during the summer months. Substituting teaching often meets the needs of individuals changing careers or retirees looking for flexible and rewarding work. Many teachers begin their careers as substitute teachers, providing them an opportunity to get to know school staff and school culture prior to accepting full-time teaching positions. Substitute teaching is also a great way to make employment contacts for positions which may become available in the future.

Substitute teachers have a difficult job. Not only must they meet new students on a regular basis, they must also make judgements about how to provide meaningful continuity until the regular teacher returns. • From Mary Garrett, mgarrett@mail.win.org , a language arts teacher at Francis Howell North High School in St. Peters, Missouri: Electronic Sub Plans " I find that email is the perfect tool for sending sub plans to school when I am not able to go myself. I just email a friend who can print out the plans and take them with him/her in the morning. (Of course, I call first to make sure the friend is able to do it.) I already have an outline of my schedule and other permanent information on word processing. Whenever I am going to be absent, I just type in the current information. Computers make planning so much easier." From Susan Smith

When there is a teacher absence, rarely is there time to plan significant learning activities, so too often "busywork" becomes the assignment for the day. This book solves that problem by suggesting ideas for meaningful, short-term classroom activities, with an emphasis on the processes of speaking, listening, and writing in the classroom. Many of the activities include reproducible artwork in an 8 1/2" X 11" format.
