It will be useful to make a distinction at the outset between STYLE and USAGE. As readers of this journal know, there are two meanings of the term usage. The commonsense use of the term in books under review here might better be called usage conventions or usage rules. It is often the case that when such usage pronouncements were first made, they did not reflect the actual facts of usage by major writers of the time; hence, the term usage can, in reality, be quite misleading. However, it is also the details of actual usage that one often means by the term

Teaching Minority Students To Write Effectively
Prepared by: Herman A. Estrin
ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading, English, and Communication Digest #83
Today, many beginning students in urban public colleges and technical schools are members of minority groups. Such is the case at New Jersey Institute of Technology, where I taught. To teach these high school graduates (many of whom have had very little writing practice) how to write a composition effectively, we had to dispel their fear of writing, give them something to write about to encourage them to write with success, and instill in each student self-confidence, dignity, and a sense of self-worth. To accomplish these goals, the following six-step approach was used: 1. Instruct students how to write a composition by: a. Choosing an appropriate subject and limiting it. b. Considering the purpose of writing. c. Writing a central idea of the composition. d. Developing a working plan or an outline before writing the composition. e. Using the outline as a tool in writing.

Name: Elements of Style - William Strunk What's at the Site:
This is one of the sites listed by Bartleby.com, so links to other useful sites, such as authors, familiar quotations, and English usage are found at the top of the page. The Elements of Style page is something most of us remember in book form as the Bible of writing style. I wonder if E. B. White would have enjoyed seeing it in digital form. How to use the site:
The theory is that students will get a good foundation in the first few chapters of the online book. After the foundation, students can build upon it and thenýbreak the rules. But first, students should use Elements of Style to learn usage, composition. Students will also find Matters of Form, Commonly Misused Expressions, and Commonly Misspelled Words. We hope that it will answer many of the questions about Freshman English which students may have. Let us know if you have additions or other ideas.
To the Student
Welcome to Composition I and II at Lynchburg College! In your first two semesters here, you will be required to take English 111 and 112, two parts of a year-long course offered by faculty teaching in the English Program. Ordinarily, you will remain in the same section for both semesters so that you continue under the guidance of one instructor. Each of these courses is a step along the way toward meeting the learning goals of Freshman Composition. Course requirements and standards are consistent across sections. Following are the goals which establish that consistency:
