Baron answers questions (as "Dr. Grammar") and offers advice on dealing with the Language Police (William Safire and his ilk), the demands of politically correct language, the peculiarities of English spelling, jargon, plagiarism, and sundry other topics. Baron, Dennis E. Grammar and Good Taste: Reforming the American Language . New Haven: Yale Univ. Press, 1982. After the Revolution, English supplanted Latin and Greek as the dominant language of instruction in American schools. Patriots sought to differentiate American from British English by establishing native standards of spelling, grammar, and pronunciation. Some advocated the formation of an American Academy, like the French Academy, to set these standards. The authors of popular grammar textbooks also attempted to set standards. Although no uniform "Federal grammar" emerged, the link between correct grammar and patriotism led to the association of correctness with good morals in general, and hence with social prestige. The link between grammar and morality also fostered intense anxiety about correctness that continues to this day. See: Francis Christensen, "A Generative Rhetoric of the Paragraph" [

The style guide is intended to provide stylistic consistency by choosing among various correct but alternative rules of spelling, capitalization, hyphenation, punctuation, etc., and by documenting those choices. Stylistic consistency enables writers and editors to work more efficiently, and it helps readers to concentrate on content without being distracted by variations in how rules and conventions are applied from one page to the next and from one publication to another. What really could Vitanza mean when he writes that the university is not a safe place for students to learn to write?
    Victor J. Vitanza

    Christine Farris

'We' have yet to write 'writing'! 'We' may never write 'writing,' but 'we' must start letting writing write. Such a writing cannot, should not, take place, and will not, unless under the most radical, still unthinkable, conditions . . . take place . . . in the university (or the schools). It is simply not safe for students to write 'in' or 'at' the university. Any university. What is taught at the university is not-writing.
    Victor J. Vitanza

Certainly the humanist cult of self-expression that dominated turn-of-the-century composition pedagogy, with its insistence on the personal essay, can be called an art of display with some justice.

    Where Rhetoric Meets the Road:
First-Year Composition print version Don't some things just go without saying Where did we go wrong? What did we forget to put in the curriculum?!
In the beginning was the word and the word was rhetoric . Corbett, Kinneavy, Horner and Lauer said, 'Let rhetoric spread within English departments throughout the land . . . as a productive theoretical foundation for teaching first-year composition.' They separated process from product. And, they said, rhetoric was good. Thus began the field of rhetoric and composition studies.
    Krista Ratcliffe
Finally I decided that if the rhetorical roots of our program's first-year writing curriculum are so overgrown as to be invisible to the new kids on the block, perhaps it is because, as Cheryl Glenn said in her reply to Krista Ratcliffe's e-mail, the field of rhetoric is now so "plastic" (qtd. in Ratcliffe ), located in an ever-changing and sometimes embattled English Studies intersecting with postmodern theory, cultural studies, and critical pedagogy. When I entered the field of composition in the 1980s, thanks to people like Edward Corbett, Andrea Lunsford, and Win Horner, the connections to rhetoric, indeed, went without saying. The "rhetoric" shaping the freshman writing course familiar to our current graduate students is perhaps less recognizable as rhetoric We bought into what Susan Miller would later call the "neoclassical account" ( Textual 36) of composition's historical beginnings in ancient rhetoric, which, reduced to mere style, fell into "decline," only to be rescued by (and the rescuer of) composition in the latter half of the twentieth century (

The field of linguistics has just seen the publication of a comprehensive resource for discourse analysis Barbara Johnstone's new text Discourse Analysis. Johnstone describes the method of discourse analysis as a heuristic: [T]he basic question a discourse analyst asks is "Why is this text the way it is? Why is it no other way?" [...] We can divide the questions that need to be asked about a text into six broad categories. Each of these aspects of text-building is both a source of constraint a reason why texts are typically some ways and not others and a resource for creativity, as speakers, signers, and writers express themselves by manipulating the patterns that have become conventional.
