The majority had responded to Barber's surveyyes, that "technology will be directly responsible for significant change in English teaching between now and the year 2000" (Barber, 1986). One point in that report made me refocus on aspects of my own work. The commentators in the report, a wide range of international composition specialists, agreed on the importance of at least one field of technological advance that could have the broadest impact on the schools: educational software that is heuristic, interactive, and contextual.
