The Communication and Study Skills Unit (CSSU) teaches communication and study skills to all incoming first year students. The courses are designed to help students make the difficult transition from secondary to tertiary level education. To facilitate this transition, courses are specifically designed for the communication needs of students in different faculties. The different study modes and strategies applicable to university study are also taught. Each course also contains a section which focuses upon the development of academic writing skills which go beyond the narrow conceptualisation of communication and study skills as a course concerned only with study skills activities and incidental remediation of writing conventions, grammar, punctuation and essay structuring.
Currently, communication and Study Skills courses are offered to first year students only. With the introduction of semeristerised courses from August 2002, CSSU courses will be offered as General Education Courses (GEC) at two levels. Level I will comprise six (6) foundation courses, which every 1st year student will be required to study in two semesters to earn a total of 4 credits.

There is Physics involved in the following paragraph. English teachers unaccompanied by science teaching colleagues may wish to skip this paragraph) Whoever decided (Einstein?) that time is relative was right. Physicists everywhere will be pleased to know that lengthy and scientific observation has confirmed it: time can pass really quickly when you're up to your eyebrows in the whirling chaos of a new term and year. Fortunately, thanks to chaos theory, you can be confident that somewhere underneath the apparent random madness of the average school day, there is order.
