Teaching Thinking Skills
Kathleen Cotton Perhaps most importantly in today's information age, thinking skills are viewed as crucial for educated persons to cope with a rapidly changing world. Many educators believe that specific knowledge will not be as important to tomorrow's workers and citizens as the ability to learn and make sense of new information. D. Gough, 1991 INTRODUCTION Throughout history, philosophers, politicians, educators and many others have been concerned with the art and science of astute thinking. Some identify the spirit of inquiry and dialogue that characterized the golden age of ancient Greece as the beginning of this interest. Others point to the Age of Enlightenment, with its emphasis on rationality and progress (Presseisen 1986, p. 6). In the twentieth century, the ability to engage in careful, reflective thought has been viewed in various ways: as a fundamental characteristic of an educated person, as a requirement for responsible citizenship in a democratic society, and, more recently, as an employability skill for an increasingly wide range of jobs. Deborah Gough's words quoted at the beginning of this report typify the current viewpoint in education about the importance of teaching today's students to think critically and creatively. Virtually all writers on this subject discuss thinking skills in connection with the two related phenomena of modern technology and fast-paced change. Robinson, for example, states in her 1987 practicum report:

LATEST NEWS! (28 April 2005)
My latest guide for students - Excellent Dissertations! - has just been published, by Open University Press, in the STUDENT-FRIENDLY GUIDES series, and is available from all good bookshops. It's a guide to planning, managing and writing up a dissertation project, and is intended for final-year undergraduates and taught postgraduates.
To find out more about it and the other books in the series: CLICK HERE
Excellent Dissertations! supersedes the Notes on Planning and Writing Your Dissertation which were on this website, so I have now withdrawn that document.
Parts of this site are getting a bit dated and in need of refreshing. Apologies for this: I've been giving priority to writing the new book (and there's another on the way). Please bear with me!

AND STILL HERE! (5 November 2003)
Beat the Witch-Hunt! Peter Levin's Guide to Avoiding and Re but ting Accusations of Plagiarism, for Conscientious Students
I've spent much of the past three months checking out instructions to students and material circulating among academics on the subject of 'plagiarism'. I've been shocked by what I've found. Academia seems to be in the grip of a 'moral panic': its values, principles and interests are seen as under attack from legions of plagiarizing students. And students are faced with regulations, instructions and injunctions that contain emotive language and terminology that is open to a variety of interpretations, as well as varying from one institution to another.

This Week's Topic
Study Skills

An essential skill for students in the classroom and in the workplace is the ability to study and to understand written material. This week’s Teaching Tips will help your students with the SQ3R study method, a five-step system of studying.
This Week's Tips
SQ3R Step 1—Survey
(Monday)
Studying begins with surveying the text material. Have students look over the table of contents, and read and think about the title of the book. Have students page through the chapters to look at introductions, headings, pictures, graphs, and charts. At the end of chapters, students should look over chapter reviews and read the summaries. Provide class time for students to familiarize themselves with the text, and then do the same at the beginning of each chapter.

A Call for More Study Skills Instruction
by Joan Sedita, M.Ed.
The term "metacognition" is used in education to describe the learning process. It means transcending cognition, or more simply put, thinking about thinking. Study skills instruction develops in students a metacognitive approach to school - they learn how to learn. Students need to go beyond completing an assignment and think about how they complete it. They need to be aware of the process they follow and steps they take when prereading a textbook, taking notes in class, or answering an essay question on a test. To most people, teaching basic skills means the 3 R's: Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic. I believe, however, that study skills are an essential component of basic skills which for too long has been neglected. I have devoted a significant portion of my twenty years work in the field of learning disabilities to developing study skills curriculums and instructional material, and to training educators and parents how to teach study skills. Study skills instruction benefits all students, but it is crucial to students who have learning disabilities.

LEARNING DISABILITIES NEED STUDY SKILLS INSTRUCTION?

As I write this article I realise that the subject of study skills is vast and with further problems and/ or solutions in the teaching of study skills.

Study Skills:
you can lead a horse to water
Christine Ostler This article first appeared in Summer 1997 Dyslexia Review journal. Many dyslexics experience difficulties with organisation, time-management and 'seeing the wood for the trees' - areas in which some facility is essential for the development of efficient study skills. In this article I propose to outline some of the skills that need to be included in a study skills programme, giving examples of the difficulties experienced and of the resistance/reluctance some pupils show when strategies to improve these skills are introduced. I will describe the strategies I have employed in order to facilitate effective studying when confronted with, "I've tried it but it doesn't work", or "there's no time to do that!". The scenarios I recount are all genuine, although to save my pupils' blushes I've changed their names
IDENTIFYING A PREFERRED LEARNING STYLE
Pupils who have followed a multi-sensory literacy course will be familiar with using various modalities to develop automaticity in sound/symbol correspondence. Whilst all the senses are important for efficient learning, some pupils will rely more heavily on a particular modality: they may need a strong visual input of words, pictures, diagrams and colour; or they may need to hear the information and repeat it, since learning from one's own voice can be a powerful memory aid; or they may need to use their motor memory, writing, drawing or tracing the information. It is helpful for a pupil to be aware

Study Skills
1. At a British University, the system places less emphasis on short-term assignments and more on a long term perspective. 2. Much work is not set but assumed; you are expected to pace yourself, learn as you go along and read extensively, without always being told what to read. 4. Organising yourself and your work.
  • If you do not relax and enjoy yourself sufficiently, your work will suffer. You will also miss out on many experiences which form an important part of life in Britain and of your development as an individual.
  • 5. Note-Taking
  • Note-taking is for three things: organises information given;
    lists references for future use;
    spurs concentration
    Note-taking is NOT to record every word. When listening to a lecture or doing a practical in the laboratory or in the field, identify the main arguments and the conclusion. These need to be underlined or highlighted. Illustrative details can be just listed briefly in between.
