Charles Groves , who was a Biological Sciences major at Oklahoma State University. Charles graduated summa cum laude in May 2003 with a 3.9 GPA and has been accepted to medical school. Missy Connor who is an Elementary Education graduate of Oklahoma State University and who maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her college career.
And of course I have to offer a few tips of my own!
-Use the time between classes. When you have a 50-minute break in between two classes, instead of walking home and then turning around to walk right back to class, find a spot to sit down. Look over the notes you just took and look up anything you were not clear about. Spend the other half of the time preparing for the upcoming class. Look over the notes from the most recent class meeting and review the chapter you were supposed to have read.
-Find what works for you. Everyone here uses their own unique way - you have to find your unique way, through trial and error, for yourself.

National Association of School Psychologists Many capable children at all grade levels experience frustration and failure in school, not because they lack ability, but because they do not have adequate study skills. Good study habits are important for success in school, to foster feelings of competence, to develop positive attitudes, and to help children realize they can control how well they do in school and in life. Good study habits lay the groundwork for successful work habits as an adult. For children to learn good study skils, teachers and parents must work together. It is most important to help children build good habits, to develop a system that works for an individual child, and to use the system effectively and consistently. Preferred learning styles vary from child to child. Children need to discover how they learn and then work out a study system that fits best. Parents of elementary aged children usually help their children more than parents of adolescents. However, adolescents also need parental support and encouragement throughout high school.

Preface
Many students consult me for advice on how to overcome specific difficulties with their studies. I expect there are many more who wish they had written materials to consult but do not know what to look for or where to find it. I wrote this annotated bibliography with those students’ needs in mind. The materials I have reviewed are available from the AU Library. Students can access the AU Library Catalogue online from the Learning Centres or on the World Wide Web. The materials are organized into five sections. "English Grammar" contains books focusing on language usage and spelling. "Exams and Exam Anxiety Reduction" discusses books about exam preparation, taking specific types of exams, and dealing with exam anxiety. "Math and Math Anxiety Reduction" has books that teach and refresh math skills or deal with exam anxiety; the Tobias book does both. "Study Skills" books cover a wide range of study skills and are often a good place for students to begin their reading. "Writing Essays, Research Papers and Reports" focuses on writing major documents.

One student said she had bought a brand new notebook for school. She said she put it together with new supplies including a zipper bag, cute pens and pencils, dividers, and folders just like the one she had carried the year before. A boy in the group asked why she didn't just use the notebook binder she had from last year. Her answer was classic, "Well, I lost it and have no earthly idea where it is!"

Up Use Back Button to Return to Table of Contents Here is a great method for teaching the study skills sections in On Course : "Wise Choices in College." This method uses a collaborative learning strategy called the Jigsaw. Instructors of any course will probably find a use for this multipurpose collaborative teaching strategy. The Jigsaw process is great for giving students the responsibility of learning and for teaching any body of information that can be segmented...so this same process could be used in an English class to teach grammar or a math class to teach formulas. In fact, I can't think of a subject with which it couldn't be used. It could even be used in an orientation to familiarize students with a body of information such as important parts of the college catalogue. The Jigsaw is a great strategy for adding student involvement and zest to the learning process. THE JIGSAW SET UP: Students have a copy of the On Course text open to the chosen "Wise Choices in College" section: Effective Writing, Effective Reading, Effective Note Taking, Effective Memorizing, Effective Studying, or Effective Test Taking. DIRECTIONS: 1) Put your class into home groups of 3 students each.

Teaching Study Skills with Brain Science by Timmi Jo Forbes (primary author), H. Teresa Buckland, M.Ed, Susanna Cunningham, Ph.D., Mona Murr Kunselman, Ph.D., Jennifer Wilkinson, and Jenny L. Williamson, M.Ed. As a learning disabilities specialist, I have found that parents, teachers and students often misunderstand learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). I have also found it challenging to convince my sixth through eighth grade students that although their brains might be organized differently, they are smart and they can learn. In search of facts and science to back up my assertions, I applied for the Making Connections 1997 Summer Institute sponsored by the University of Washington School of Nursing. After attending, I could hardly wait to take what I had learned back to my non-science Special Education English/Literature classes and try placing the new information into my curriculum. To enhance reading, critical thinking and writing skills, students were assigned additional activities.
