Bank Street Thinkers
Supervising the Beginning Teacher (1959)
by Claudia Lewis and Charlotte B. Winsor
Described here is an attempt to reduce the period of student teaching by a supervised work-study plan. For 27 years Bank Street College of Education has been preparing liberal arts college graduates for nursery and elementary teaching, in a one-year course of intensive graduate study. The premise has been that personal maturity together with a disciplined educational experience are proper requisites for competent creative teaching. The program has, of course, undergone many changes since its inception in the early '30's, but none of these has been more far-reaching in implications than the recent revisions undertaken as a result of the growing teacher shortage and the "great debate" in education, often most directly related to teacher education. About five years ago, Bank Street College - along with other teacher training institutions in this area - came face to face with this urgent social-educational problem: Is there a way to put more teachers into elementary classrooms sooner without the loss of effective learning for teachers? "Is teacher education necessary at all?" is a cry heard all about us. For school people the answer is a resounding "yes" but a soul-searching examination of method may be in order. The outlines of a new training plan began to take shape in our thinking. Could we reduce the period of student teaching and offer qualified candidates the opportunity to teach

When the Student Teacher Arrives
Last modified September 23, 2005
Participants in the Student Teaching Program
The student teacher is assigned to work with a cooperating teacher subject to the latter's consent. This assignment in no way takes away any of the rights, privileges and responsibilities of the cooperating teacher. It is hoped that the student teacher will show initiative and a desire to accept responsibility. These are just two of the criteria for measuring an individual's readiness to teach. However, in all cases, the student teacher must receive the consent of the cooperating teacher before proceeding along any course of action. The cooperating teacher should stand ready to help the student teacher in every way possible. Student teachers can best use this assistance by asking for help when it is needed and by planning lessons well in advance so that there is ample time for the discussions and revision of the lesson plans. The University supervisor's position is that of a liaison between the University and school. This person will visit the school periodically to consult with and evaluate the student teacher. On the occasion of these visits, it is hoped that there will be a period of time when the student teacher, cooperating teacher, and University supervisor may discuss the student teacher and set forth solutions to any problems that have arisen. During each visit, and particularly at the end of the student teacher's assignment, the University supervisor will ask for advice from the cooperating teacher about the evaluation of the student teacher.

Describes the process and outcomes of a collaborative self-study by five Chilean teacher educators interested in improving their supervision of student teachers, examining problems they encountered as first-time writers of a self-study report. Student Teaching at the Middle Level Most beginning teachers will agree that the student teaching experience is the most practical and worthwhile experience in their teacher preparation program. It is the one culminating experience that brings together the earlier studies in subject matter specializations, adolescent development, pedagogy, and curriculum. Middle level student teachers also share a respect for this final field experience, yet these students are often placed in a setting that is basically different from the junior highs of yesteryear. In addition to the former areas integrated into the student teaching process, there is an added dimension to this teacher induction process in which the student teacher must learn to absorb the culture of the middle level schools. The fact that many beginning teachers in middle level schools are encountering elements such as interdisciplinary teaming, flexible block scheduling, advisory programs, and integrated curricula adds to the uniqueness of the middle level student teaching practicum. Because the experience may be unique, there are a number of ideas that can facilitate the transition from college student to effective middle level teacher. A few of those ideas are: getting off to a good start, developing effective interpersonal relationships with the cooperating teacher and the university supervisor, and acclimating the student teacher to the responsibilities of an effective middle school teacher.

Field Experience
Students in the University of Virginia Teacher Education Program have varied experiences working in classrooms. Starting in the second year of college, the field placement activities gradually increase in complexity and responsibility. For example:
  • Second Year, conducting structured observations of children, schools, and communities.
  • Third Year, tutoring an individual student, developing a case study
  • Fourth Year, includes such activites as:
    • planning and teaching a multi-lesson unit, and
    • developing and implementing conflict resolution strategies within schools
  • Fifth Year, one-semester Teaching Associateship: full-time student teaching experience in Fall semester
  • Fifth Year, Spring Semester, conducting a field project investigation or equivalent experience approved by the program area
Local school divisions work closely with the Teacher Education Program to provide second-year, third-year and fourth-year students with experiences in observation, tutoring pupils and teaching lessons or units. Several schools have developed close relationships with faculty responsible for specific field and course work related experiences. Teachers in these schools are committed to the professional growth of Curry School students and incorporate their teacher preparation activities into their classroom curricula and routines. All early field experiences are placed in local schools convenient to the university.
