Summer Internships for High School Youths
The goal of High Schools That Work is to advance career-bound youths’ academic, intellectual, technical and personal skills. These students are defined as the large number of high school students who plan to work, enter the military, attend a two-year community college or technical school, or enroll in a four-year college or university after high school graduation. By integrating high-level academic studies with technical learning, high schools can raise the achievement of these students. Many high schools cannot provide the in-depth career studies or modern technology and equipment to prepare students for today’s workplace. A well-planned summer internship can meet these needs. Summer internships motivate students to select the right courses, study harder and make learning in high school a priority. Students benefit from seeing real-life applications of the academic, technical, intellectual and personal skills that are being taught in high school. Internships also give students access to primary jobs — jobs that lead to high wages and career pathways — rather than low-skill, low-wage secondary jobs or "youth" jobs usually available to high school students. Summer internships may be offered in any field, including manufacturing, health care, banking and finance, travel and hospitality, communications and construction.

The 2005 Summer Internship Program is designed to allow college students an opportunity to be mentored by professionals in their chosen field, use state-of-the-art equipment and technology, and learn valuable interpersonal and presentation skills. There will be 5-10 internships, depending on the needs of the Scientific Investigators. During the internship, students will gain an understanding of research methods, instruments and testing procedures, and how test results contribute to a larger research project. They will assist an Investigator and/or designee in resolving problems in the execution of experiments. Our goal is that they will understand, recognize, and properly perform and record established experimental procedures. At the end of the internship program, students will give an oral presentation about their experience to the research staff.

Summary/Abstract:
This is a description of a program created to provide students with internships in a variety of scientific fields. Students research and identify their own internship opportunities. Students keep a daily journal describing their experiences during their 30 hour volunteer internship programs.
Activity:
In this program, students choose a field of science that interests them and shadow their sponsor; dentist, physician, forest ranger, researcher, midwife, nurse, etc. for 30 hours. They keep bound journals in which they record their thoughts and experiences each day. When they have completed the required 30 hours, they turn in a typed summary of their internship along with their journal and experiences to the class and discuss what they learned and how it influenced them. This activity has been successful beyond my wildest dreams! The internship allows students the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge and experience to actual life situations; to see the relevance of what they learn in the classroom; to provide experiences that expose them to science careers; and to instill an appreciation for science and its benefits to man and other animals. The experience of working with a scientist makes students feel good about themselves and gives them the confidence they need to choose science-related careers. Since I began this program, many of my students go on to study science and several now work in science oriented jobs.

Highway scare students start internships
Story Tools MIAMI, Florida (CNN) Three medical students who were stopped on a Florida highway for a highly publicized, 17-hour terror investigation, have begun an internship in Miami, a Muslim activist from Florida said Sunday. Ayman Gheith, 27, Kambiz Butt, 25, and Omer Choudhary, 23, were driving September 13 to Miami, where they were to begin their internship at Larkin Community Hospital, when they were stopped on Interstate 75 by police. RELATED 'Bring it down' was about a car, students' lawyer says Terror scare men: 'We want our dignity back' She said, they said Florida authorities had been told to be on the lookout for the men, who were traveling in two cars, after a woman reported she heard them make suspicious comments at a restaurant in north Georgia. The men were cleared and released after 17 hours on the side of the road, but the hospital, citing "threatening, ethnic, racial e-mails directed at Muslim-Americans," decided to turn the students away. "We felt that the students' medical education would be adversely compromised due to the current national attention," Larkin Community Hospital President Dr. Jack Michel said at the time.
