History of the region which is politically part of the United Kingdom. Role of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and its use of armed warfare and religious strategies to end British rule. Efforts over the years to stop the violence. Paper Introduction: NORTHERN IRELAND Politically still part of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland’s “Troubles” continue as a fight between the Protestants and the Catholics. Geographically, Northern Ireland is slightly larger than the state of Connecticut, and consists of 26 districts, “derived from the boroughs of Belfast and Londonderry and the counties of Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone. Together, they are commonly referred to as Ulster, though the territory does not contain the entire ancient province of Ulster.” (Brunner 877) Part of the contention deals with the so-called Six Counties, as the Protestants see it, and Nine counties (adding Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan from the ancient Ulster kingdom) that the Catholics want to preserve. Ulster (as we will refer to it from here on) was part of Catholic Ireland, until i

James I, Charles I and the descent into Civil War, the King executed, Cromwell rules
James Stuart was a Scottish Catholic who believed in the "Divine Right" to rule as he pleased. This brought him into conflict with the English Parliament. The failed Catholic Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament in 1605 led to anti catholic riots. The failure of both James and his son Charles I to understand the English tradition of parliamentary liberty led eventually to civil war James died unlamented in 1625. Charles I immediately came in to conflict with Parliament. He tried to rule without summoning parliament for 11 years, but eventually ran out of money, and summoned Parliament in 1640 Parliament was naturally peeved about his neglect of their rights. They refused him money, and the country split between supporters of the king (blue on map left) and supporters of parliament (red on the map) The first major Engagement of the Civil War was at Edgehill in the Cotswolds on 1642. Indecision among the Royalists and the moulding of the New Model army by the parliamentarians led to Parliament gaining the upper hand, and by 1645 Cromwell won the decisive Battle of Naseby. Charles was captured and put on trial for treason in 1649. He refused to recognise the court, but was regardless found guilty. 59 republicans signed the death warrant (above), and after the restoration Charles II prosecuted those that he could.

WAR having been declared against Spain in the year 1739, the Chevalier de St. George despatched Lord Marischal to Madrid to induce the court of Spain to adopt measures for his restoration. But however willing Spain might be to assist him, he was desirous that no attempt should be made without the concurrence of France. About the same time, that is, in the beginning of the year 1740, some of the more zealous and leading Jacobites, in anticipation of a war with France, held a meeting at Edinburgh, and formed themselves into an association, by which they engaged themselves to take arms and venture their lives and fortunes to restore the family of Stuart, provided the King of France would send over a body of troops to their assistance. The association, like that which brought over King William to England, consisted of seven persons, viz., Lord Lovat, James Drummond, commonly called Duke of Perth, the Earl of Traquair, Sir James Campbell of Auchinbreck, Cameron of Lochiel, John Stuart, brother to Lord Traquair, and Lord John Drummond, uncle to the Duke of Perth. [Letters to the Duke of Ormond and Lord Marischal, 27th January, 1740, among the Stuart Papers.

      Bill of Rights (Great Britain)
Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Bill of Rights (Great Britain) , bill regarded as a basic component of Britain's unwritten constitution , the product of the 17th-century conflict of power between Stuart monarchs, their subjects, and Parliament The bill incorporated the Declaration of Rights, the statement of terms on which the Crown of England was offered to the Prince and Princess of Orange. Their acceptance of it permitted them to become William III and Mary II ; with their royal assent in December 1689 it became an Act of Parliament. The bill stated that James II had tried to destroy the Protestant religion, laws, and liberties of the kingdom. It confirmed limitations on sovereigns; they could not exercise suspending or dispensing powers, levy money, or keep a standing army in time of peace without Parliament's consent, or use their prerogative to set up new law courts. Liberties of subjects were acknowledged, with emphasis on those of Parliament. All Englishmen had the right to petition the king, to be free from excessive bail, and to be tried by a jury of freeholders if accused of treason. Parliament should have free elections, and be summoned frequently, and members should be given complete freedom of speech.
