The most likely time for the strings to snap unexpectedly is on their first tuning, and it is important to keep your eyes out of the way. Tune up slowly, and make sure you have a pitch pipe or tuning meter handy, and that you know the correct tuning so you don't over tighten the strings. Before you tune a hammered dulcimer you need to get the middle bridge in exactly the right position. Tune just the top and bottom courses so you can still move the bridge. Then move the bridge until you get a perfect fifth by sounding the strings either side of the bridge. Do this both top and bottom, then check the middle too before continuing with the tuning on the rest of the strings. You can't move the bridge once it is tuned. Buzzes On cheaper mandolins, banjos etc. you may find there is a metallic rattle on the odd string when you first tune them up.

Students can earn an associate degree in string instrument technology in the two-year, hands-on program. During the first semester, students become acquainted with the violin and tools. They learn to make necessary repairs to the violin, and they make a pattern and forms to make their own violin. Students spend the next three semesters making a violin. They cut their own wood for the violin, learn about pigment and varnish, and complete the making of a violin as part of their degree requirement. They also take a course on the history of violin making, which is also popular with students pursuing performance degrees in string instruments. Since the program was established in 1978, 95 percent of the graduates have accepted positions and are currently working in the field. Computer-generated and computer-enhanced sounds have enriched musical language and expression. But computer-based music performances still mostly involve people sitting rigidly behind a laptop, their fingers hidden by the screen. What it is How it works Four roughly parallel metal rods are each divided into a long and a short section by a bridge element. The pressure and position of the fingers on the longer rod section are continuously sensed to control pitch and expression; pressure on the shorter sections controls velocity, attack and volume. MIDI software converts this information into sound and, through magnets under each rod, vibrates the rod according to the pressure it senses, thus returning haptic feedback to the player. Value/potential The instrument and its interface is cheap to produce. Though designed for musicians of varying ability, it offers those who have mastered the subtleties of traditional stringed instruments not only a new range of sounds but a familiar richness of aural and haptic feedback.
