The String Instruments
Brass Woodwinds Strings Percusion Links Home This is the String Family . The four major instruments in the string family are the violin viola cello , and the double bass . String instruments are plucked or played with a bow. They are built the same way. The instruments are made of many pieces of wood which are glued together. The body of the instrument is hollow. This becomes a resonating box for the sound. Four strings (sometimes five on the double-bass) made of animal gut, nylon, or steel are wrapped around pegs at one end of the instrument and attached to a tailpiece at the other. They are stretched tightly across a bridge to produce their assigned pitches.
The Violin Listen to the violin.
The violin is the highest sounding instrument in the string family. It is held under the chin, resting on the shoulder. top
The Viola Listen to the viola.
The viola is the alto voice in the string family. Like the violin, it is held under the chin, resting on the shoulder. Unlike the violin, the viola is slightly larger and is tuned five notes lower. top
The Cello Listen to the cello.

String Instruments from Around the World
According to the classification system developed by E.M. von Hornbostel and C. Sachs, all string instruments are called chordophones. Chordophones are instruments in which strings are stretched under tension, and sound is produced by causing strings to vibrate. This may be done by plucking, strumming, striking, or bowing the strings, or even allowing them to be blown by the wind, as in the case of the Aeolian harp. String instruments are known in every culture.
String instruments can be divided into four categories: harps, zithers, lutes, and lyres. Because there are so many variations of these instruments, it is sometimes difficult to assign an instrument to one category.
Early string instruments may have looked like the hunting bow (bow and arrow). Such an instrument is called a musical bow. The first object drawn across it to produce sound may have been a stick. Various types of resonators such as gourds were added to these bows to enhance the sound. If you think of the hunting bow standing upright, with its curved back next to you, you can imagine, with the addition of some strings, how the harp came into existence. We know that the harp has existed since ancient times. Harps have frames, across which strings are stretched. There is a resonator, or in the case of the modern Western symphonic harp, a soundboard. A folk harp, called the arpa

http://eamusic.dartmouth.edu/~kov/soundArt/panGoed.html
Long string instruments have been a popular form of working with the coupling of sound and space as a compositional subject. The basic principle they work upon is the amplification of longitudinal waves in strings rather than transverse waves. That is, what is heard is the expansion and contraction of the length of the string, not the perpendicular displacement of the string. Thus, long string instruments can actually be "played" by the wind, by sounds travelling through the air, or by merely brushing the string horizontally. Long string instruments exist all over the globe, with instruments on the Isle of Wight, Nova Scotia, New Zealand, Australia and germany. Some Americans who have worked in this medium are Ellen Fullman, Terry Fox, Phil Niblock, Tom Johnson, and Alvin Lucier. Their first long string instrument was an installation in Mainz. When invited to make a work for the hall, Panhuysen and Goedhart wanted to create something which would employ the specific architectural and atmospheric qualities of the hall. "We wanted to make an artwork from the entire space using as few means and interventions as possible, a drawing in three dimensions, and we chose steel strings, known as 'Swedish music wire' for our drawing material." (Panhuysen, p. 2) The inclusion of sound into the work was gradual, beginning with the chosen strings. Later, they found that "the strings seemed to be better visible when they were sounded." With the decision that sound should be a part of this environment, they began working with resonators and amplifiers for the hall. When they were finished, "The space itself became a huge instrument whose sound fitted the atmosphere of the building." (Panhuysen, p. 2)
