The Associated Press Thursday 28 July 2005 Symptoms appear several months after returning from Iraq, military says. Washington - A survey of troops returning from the Iraq war found 30 percent had developed mental health problems three to four months after coming home, the Army's surgeon general said Thursday. The problems include anxiety, depression, nightmares, anger and an inability to concentrate, according to Lt. Gen. Kevin Kiley and other military medical officials. A smaller group, usually with more severe cases of these symptoms, is diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. The 30 percent figure is in contrast to the 3 percent to 5 percent diagnosed with a significant mental health issue immediately after they leave the theater, according to Col. Elspeth Ritchie, a military psychiatrist on Kiley's staff. A study of troops who were still in the combat zone in 2004 found 13 percent experienced significant mental health problems. Follow-up Screenings Soldiers departing a war zone are typically given a health evaluation as they leave combat, but the Army is only now instituting a program for follow-up screenings three to six months later, said Kiley, speaking to reporters.

PubMed Citation ABSTRACT Background The current combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have involved U.S. military personnel in major ground combat and hazardous security duty. Studies are needed to systematically assess the mental health of members of the armed services who have participated in these operations and to inform policy with regard to the optimal delivery of mental health care to returning veterans. Methods We studied members of four U.S. combat infantry units (three Army units and one Marine Corps unit) using an anonymous survey that was administered to the subjects either before their deployment to Iraq (n=2530) or three to four months after their return from combat duty in Iraq or Afghanistan (n=3671). Stress For many people stress is a fact of life in the modern world. Deadlines, juggling work and personal commitments, interruptions, rush hour traffic, conflict at home, or even the ringing of a cellular phone, are all familiar sources of stress. Although it is impossible to eliminate all stress from daily life, it is possible to control the effect that stress has on the body and the mind. Severe stress can be damaging to physical and mental heath. It can lead to lowered efficiency, depletion of adaptive resources, wear and tear on the biological system, and, in extreme cases, severe personality and physical deterioration, and even death. People with increased levels of anxiety and nervous tension often need to develop more effective ways of dealing with day to day stress.

Most importantly, see your GP for advice and treatment. For all cases of ill health, if you think it would be helpful, you can request a referral to see a specialist counsellor or psychologist through your GP, or your workplace may provide counselling for you. You could speak to your Occupational Health advisor or your manager to find out more about this. Your GP or counsellor should also be able to provide you with further information, including contact numbers for support groups and crisis telephone numbers. If you do not feel strong or confident enough to speak to someone on your own, you could take a friend or family member with you when you first go to see your GP or psychiatrist for a diagnosis.

Beating Middle of the Night Stress

    By: Kate Hufstetler

What do you do when you wake up in the middle of the night and cannot go back to sleep? Do you lie there tossing, stretch, panic, and feel your heart thumping? Do you notice your own shallow breathing? Do you try futilely to follow the random speeding thoughts that race through your mind? Top ^ Combating the Effects of Stress by Trevor Dumbleton The effects of stress are many and varied and, it is now known, they are almost all entirely bad. Stress weakens the system, tears down the body and mind, and causes long-term health problems that have been documented in numerous studies and reports. Thus, stress is ultimately a bad thing that should be avoided. By keeping stress away, you can help ensure a lifetime of health and keep yourself from overloading your body and mind. Information - Mental Health Is It the Blues or Depression? Is It Worry or Anxiety? Reduce Your Anger and Stress Aging and Alcohol Abuse Is It the Blues or Depression? Every woman gets the blues days of feeling sad or unhappy. But when these feelings darken, interfere with everyday life, and last for several weeks, they could be symptoms of a serious medical illness called clinical depression . One out of every four women will suffer one or more bouts of depression during her lifetime. Depression is even more common among women with heart disease , especially if they have had a heart attack, invasive surgery, or a heart transplant. In fact, a recent Canadian study found that women are twice as likely as men to experience depression after a heart attack. Some researchers also believe that depression may actually cause heart attacks because it creates biological hormonal changes that put added stress on the heart. Also, women suffering from depression may
