Welcome! I am a Board-Certified Clinical Psychologist with a private practice in Austin, Texas. I serve children, adolescents, and adults who are seeking individual psychotherapy to address problems such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, divorce, parenting, ADHD, relationship problems, difficulties in work, adoption issues, chronic pain or recovery from a difficult childhood. I have a collaborative approach to therapy and see it as a partnership in which I can educate, support, encourage, and guide clients to improve their lives. There are no guarantees in counselinghowever, in my experience patients do get better and almost always achieve the goals they set forth at the beginning of therapy. In my opinion, an important quality to look for in a psychologist or therapist is someone you feel comfortable with. Equally important is their training and experience. I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and have worked with clients on problems such as depression, anxiety, relationships, childhood issues, self-esteem, medical problems such as infertility or chronic pain, or simply feeling "stuck in a rut" of making the same mistakes in life but not knowing why or how to change. If you are interested in psychotherapy please email me or call my office to set up a consultation appointment. My office is in south Austin and I have both evening and Saturday hours for your convenience.

RELATED STORIES, SITES NEW ORLEANS (CNN) Mental stress can increase even triple the risk of death in people with poor coronary artery circulation, researchers said Tuesday. Patients may not die suddenly while under such stress, but are more likely to succumb to their heart disease later, said Dr. David Sheps, a researcher at East Tennessee State University. Sheps and colleagues focused their research on volunteers with ischemia a condition where blood flow to the heart is reduced. People with bad hearts often suffer chest pain during physical exertion when clogged coronary arteries are unable to supply enough blood to their heart muscle. But doctors have learned over the past 10 years that mental exertion can also overwork the heart, often without pain a condition called silent ischemia.

Brain scan could act as mental stress test for Alzheimer's
(AP) The brains of people with a genetic risk for Alzheimer's have to work harder than normal to perform simple memory tasks long before any outward symptoms of the disease develop, a study suggests. The findings suggest that the measuring technique used in the study could develop into a kind of mental stress test for early detection of Alzheimer's, much like treadmill tests for heart abnormalities.

The hectic holiday season can leave many people feeling exhausted and anxious instead of merry and bright. Mental health experts offer some ways to counter the chaos.
document.write(""); Jane Weaver document.write(''); Health editor MSNBC Mary Huhn, a writer in New York City, loves the "social whirl" of the holiday season, but she knows she can't be the life of every party if she's too tired from work and staying up late. She's learned to say "no, thank you" to some invites, tries not to stress out about "all the yummy food offerings in my face," gets enough sleep and maintains her exercise routine. "I try to pay attention to what my body and mind are telling me," she says. "I know that if I feel overwhelmed, I won't enjoy myself." Huhn has figured out how to get the most out of the holidays without stressing out, but the hectic season can leave many people feeling exhausted and anxious instead of merry and bright. Not only are some folks coping with seasonal malaise caused by shortened days and cold winter weather, but they also face the pressure to find the year's hottest (and most expensive) gifts to please family and friends.

U.S. Marines clear a house as they look for weapons caches during an operation west of Baghdad in June. The stress of combat is leading to an increasing rate of mental health disorders among troops returning home from Iraq.
WASHINGTON - Thirty percent of U.S. troops returning from the Iraq war have developed stress-related mental health problems three to four months after coming home, the Army's surgeon general said Thursday. The problems include anxiety, depression, nightmares, anger and an inability to concentrate, said Lt. Gen. Kevin Kiley and other military medical officials. A smaller number of troops, often with more severe symptoms, were diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, a serious mental illness. The 30 percent figure is in contrast to the 3 percent to 5 percent diagnosed with a significant mental health issue immediately after they leave the war theater, according to Col. Elspeth Ritchie, a military psychiatrist on Kiley's staff. A study of troops who were still in the combat zone in 2004 found 13 percent experienced significant mental health problems.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
What Is PTSD?
Post-traumatic stress disorder, also known as PTSD, is among only a few mental disorders that are triggered by a disturbing outside event, quite unlike other psychiatric disorders such as depression Many Americans experience individual traumatic events ranging from car and airplane accidents to sexual assault and domestic violence. Other experiences, including those associated with natural disasters, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes, affect multiple people simultaneously. Dramatic and tragic events, like the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, and wars occur, and with media exposure such as we have today, even people not directly involved might be affected. Simply put, PTSD is a state in which you "can't stop remembering." Although the disorder must be diagnosed by a mental health professional, symptoms of PTSD are clearly defined. To be diagnosed with PTSD, you must have been in a situation in which you were afraid for your safety or your life, or you must have experienced something that made you feel fear, helplessness, or horror. The worse the trauma, the more likely a person will develop PTSD, and the worse the symptoms. The most severely affected are unable to work, have trouble with relationships, and have great difficulty parenting their children.

    Anxiety Disorders
The anxiety disorders are the most common, or frequently occurring, mental disorders. They encompass a group of conditions that share extreme or pathological anxiety as the principal disturbance of mood or emotional tone. Anxiety, which may be understood as the pathological counterpart of normal fear, is manifest by disturbances of mood, as well as of thinking, behavior, and physiological activity.
    Types of Anxiety Disorders
The anxiety disorders include panic disorder (with and without a history of agoraphobia), agoraphobia (with and without a history of panic disorder), generalized anxiety disorder, specific phobia, social phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, acute stress disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (DSM-IV). In addition, there are adjustment disorders with anxious features, anxiety disorders due to general medical conditions, substance-induced anxiety disorders, and the residual category of anxiety disorder not otherwise specified (DSM-IV). Panic Attacks and Panic Disorder
    unexpected situationally bound
, or situationally predisposed Panic attacks are not always indicative of a mental disorder, and up to 10 percent of otherwise healthy people experience an isolated panic attack per year (Barlow, 1988; Klerman et al., 1991). Panic attacks also are not limited to panic disorder. They commonly occur in the course of social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, and major depressive disorder (DSM-IV).

    Stressful Life Events
A majority of Americans never will confront the stress of surviving a severe, life-threatening accident or physical assault (e.g., mugging, robbery, rape); however, some segments of the population, particularly urban youths and young adults, have exposure rates as high as 25 to 30 percent (Helzer et al., 1987; Breslau et al., 1991). Life-threatening trauma frequently provokes emotional and behavioral reactions that jeopardize mental health. In the most fully developed form, this syndrome is called post-traumatic stress disorder (DSM-IV), which is described later in this chapter. Women are twice as likely as men to develop post-traumatic stress disorder following exposure to life-threatening trauma (Breslau et al., 1998.) Past Trauma and Child Sexual Abuse
Very few treatments specifically for adult survivors of childhood abuse have been studied in randomized controlled trials (IOM, 1998). Group therapy and Interpersonal Transaction group therapy were found to be more effective for female survivors than an experimental control condition that offered a less appropriate intervention (Alexander et al., 1989, 1991). In the practice setting, most psychosocial and pharmacological treatments are tailored to the primary diagnosis, which, as noted above, varies widely and may not attend to the special needs of those also reporting abuse history. Domestic Violence
Mental health interventions for victims, children, and batterers are highly important. Individual counseling and peer support groups are the interventions most frequently used by battered women. However, there is a lack of carefully controlled, methodologically robust studies of interventions and their outcomes, according to a report by the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council (IOM, 1998). A research agenda for violence against women was developed (IOM, 1996) and has served as an impetus for an ongoing research program sponsored by the U.S. Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services. Clearly, there is an urgent need for development and rigorous evaluation of prevention programs to safeguard against intimate partner violence and its impact on children.

Gender and women's mental health Gender disparities and mental health: The Facts Mental illness is associated with a significant burden of morbidity and disability. Lifetime prevalence rates for any kind of psychological disorder are higher than previously thought, are increasing in recent cohorts and affect nearly half the population. Despite being common, mental illness is underdiagnosed by doctors. Less than half of those who meet diagnostic criteria for psychological disorders are identified by doctors. Patients, too, appear reluctant to seek professional help. Only 2 in every 5 people experiencing a mood, anxiety or substance use disorder seeking assistance in the year of the onset of the disorder. Overall rates of psychiatric disorder are almost identical for men and women but striking gender differences are found in the patterns of mental illness. Why Gender?
