Coping with stress
Factsheet 32, for young people

About this factsheet This is one in a series of factsheets for parents, teachers and young people entitled Mental Health and Growing Up . The aims of these factsheets are to provide practical, up-to-date information about mental health problems (emotional, behavioural and psychiatric disorders) that can affect children and young people. This factsheet looks at what stress is, what causes it and how it might feel to be suffering from stress. It also gives some practical advice about how to cope with different types of stress. Introduction What is stress? Everyone feels stressed at times. You may feel under pressure, worried, tense, upset, sad, angry - or maybe a mixture of uncomfortable feelings. There are many ordinary situations that can make you feel stressed. For example, your school work may pile up, preparing for exams may seem as if it'staking forever, you may be being teased or bullied at school, or having problems with teachers. At home you may be arguing with parents, brothers or sisters, or close friends.

Health Issues Smoking — Why Is It So Hard to Quit? Printer Format E-mail Information
By David Krogh
Posted: Wednesday, January 1, 1992
ARTICLES
Publication Date: January 1, 1992
Almost everyone has watched someone try to quit smoking. They charge into the effort with optimism because of some new-found belief that hypnotism, nicotine gum or acupuncture will do the trick this time. They quit for a week or two, maybe even a few months, but then suddenly they're...smoking again. And, it's not just one cigarette here and there, their all-consuming habit has returned It's as if the whole effort to stop never took place. Why does this happen? How can someone not choose whether to continue this strange ritual of inhalation and exhalation? The mystery behind the inability to quit relates to the nature of the drug. Nicotine has almost no effect on a smoker that an onlooker can perceive. We believe we know why heroin is attractive: it makes people euphoric. In a slightly different way, the same thing is true of alcohol or cocaine. It would make sense that the more a drug does for us, the more alluring it would be. But if this is true, how can we explain nicotine, which hardly seems to have any noticeable effect and yet, to judge by its number of users, is easily the world's most addictive substance? Why Do People Smoke?

BellaOnline's Mental Health Editor Workplace Stress It use to be acceptable years ago for the big boss to yell at his subordinates all day, everyday. Employees from all types of walks of life, vocations, races, and geographical locations would have to put up with the stress of the workplace and then come home and deal with life at home.
History has shown that people will find a way to decompress - but unfortunately many people never learned healthy ways to do it and their marriages, families, etc. suffered because of it.
Think of the overworked mother who comes home and releases all her stress by yelling at her children about homework, their friends, their behavior etc. That behavior creates a different type of stress within the family structure that will be a legacy for those children and their children. Many people think they don't have time to decompress in "healthy" ways or ways that they would prefer. So they have an after work drink or smoke. Unfortunately, there are serious health consequences for these types of decompression tactics and they can snowball into crutches and/or addictions. So what do we do?

BellaOnline's Mental Health Editor Survive Holiday Stress The holiday season can be a very bittersweet experience for a lot of people and cause havoc on your mental health. Although it is a time to spend time with loved ones, be thankful for the year's blessings, and usually exchange a few gifts many people feel a lot of stress when it comes to dealing with those things. Some people can become so anxious about the holidays that they shut down and haven't enjoyed the season for years. But with the help of this quick list that won't be you this year!
Preparation.
Don't worry if you weren't in line at the mall the day after Thanksgiving - you still have time. But get started now. If you are having company, get the guest room ready. If you are cooking, plan and write down your menu along with an ingredient list. Compile a list of gift ideas and do a little two or three days a week, whether it's stopping by the local Target or going online and ordering the latest Barbie doll. Do not wait to the last minute for anything. The anxiety of not getting to your tasks will only create high levels of stress.
