Feeling stress
James Tighe, clinical nurse research fellow Stress in itself isn't necessarily harmful. Everyone needs goals and challenges. But too much can be damaging. We explain how to spot when stress is becoming unmanageable and suggest ways to deal with it.
In this article
Recognising stress Dealing with stress Work-related stress Tackling work stress Stress is a well known trigger for depression and it can also affect your physical health - so it's important to identify the causes of stress in your life and do everything you can to minimise them. Any sort of loss, such as bereavement, divorce or separation, or a child leaving home, causes stress, as do long-term illness and disability. But things like marriage, moving house, a new job and holidays have quite high stress ratings too. Worrying about deadlines or about not being up to the challenges of a particular task may also produce symptoms of stress, such as tension, irritability, feelings of tiredness, sleep problems and haggard looks.
Recognising stress
Some common signs of too much stress include:
  • increased irritability heightened sensitivity to criticism signs of tension, such as nail-biting

oday t here is a huge focus on physical well-being. However, we cannot cut off the body at the neck as did many physicians years ago. The two work together and today we know that stress can often cause more damage to the body than some forms of cancer and other diseases. I f we are to consider our overall well-being, we should not draw a line between our bodies and our heads, our minds are more complex than we even realized. M any perceptions about mental health have changed over time. Although, it can sometimes be difficult to recognize signs that a person is struggling with their mental state. Often people, especially teens and young adults think seeking help for depression or another 'mind matter' makes them a weaker person. This is just not true.

What is good emotional health?
People with good emotional health are in control of their thoughts, feelings and behaviors. They feel good about themselves and have good relationships. They can keep problems in perspective. It's important to remember that people with good emotional health sometimes have emotional problems or mental illness. Mental illness often has a physical cause such as a chemical imbalance in the brain. Stress and problems with family, work or school can sometimes trigger mental illness or make it worse. However, people with good emotional health have learned ways to cope with stress and problems. They know when they need to seek help from their doctor or a counselor. Return to top

Seattle Office: Lakeview Medical Dental Bldg. 3216 NE 45th Place Suite 303 West Seattle, WA 98105 Phone: (206) 903-9434 Welcome, In my practice I provide counseling for adults, children, couples, and families. I'm located in Seattle's University Village area and provide treatment for: Relationship Issues Life and Career Transitions Divorce Adjustment Physical and Sexual Abuse Depression Adoption Stress / Anger Management Parenting What interferes with people getting started with counseling? There are a number of possibilities. Someone may be just unfamiliar with what counseling is. They never went to a counselor and do not know anyone (family or friends) who have. So it is more of a fear of the unknown. Perhaps they are afraid of feeling criticized/judged for their behavior, thoughts, feelings etc. The purpose of counseling is to provide people with a better understanding of themselves and the links between their thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Sometimes people in need of counseling are feeling so hopeless that they cannot imagine someone/something being helpful. It is like wearing a pair of sun glasses, everything appears darker. Some people see themselves as self reliant and it is difficult to ask someone for assistance. Asking for help feels like a sign of weakness. However it actually takes strength and courage to initiate counseling and buckle down and focus on solving one’s problems. Click
