[Categories: Extreme sports]
Street luge is an extreme gravity-powered activity that involves riding a street luge board (sometimes referred to as a sled) down a paved (An open way (generally public) for travel or transportation) road or course. How to Street Luge
Street luges have been clocked moving faster than 80 mph, with the rider lying mere inches from the pavement. In addition to being an exciting and fun sport, street luge is a personal challenge, a thrilling hobby and a brotherhood in which the initiation is speed. Steps: Attend a street luge event, such as the X Games, and see what it's all about. Talk with the riders and verify that they're not simply out of their minds. Research what it takes to build a street luge (see "Set Up a Street Luge Board," under Related eHows), draw up your plan and gather your materials. Build your custom street luge. Realize that this is a major aspect of the sport. The more research and knowledge you can pour into your custom luge, the better your luge experience will be. Gather your safety gear and bless it according to whatever religion you subscribe.

Luge Speak

Where street luge began, no one is quite sure. Lugers from West Coast of the United States to the Swill Alps all claim to have given birth to the sport some time in the ‘70’s. We do know that the sport evolved from skateboarding, using skateboard-style wheels and trucks and first debuted in front of a national crowd at the 1995 X Games. The sport has been known as " downhill skateboarding", "laydown downhill skateboarding", "butt boarding", "land luge", "dry land luge" and "road luge". Many credit X Games creator Ron Semiano with coining the term "street luge" The first organized event is said to have taken place in Signal Hill, CA. The event began in 1978 and abruptly ended in 1978, when both athletes and spectators were injured. After the event at Signal Hill, the first of many street luge organizations emerged. To this day, the rules remain separate between the following organizations:
  • URA – Underground Racers Association - was formed and began to organize underground races that were picked up by Skateboarde r magazine and local TV stations.

by John Gettings After two years in San Diego, the world's largest "alternative" sports competition is moving north to San Francisco for more biking, blading and boarding under the California sun. From June 25 to July 3, more than 400 athletes are scheduled to compete in nine gravity-defying sports on land, at sea, and in the air.
The street luge is speeding towards a TV near you, as one of nine "alternative" sports to be featured at the fifth Summer X Games.
Introduced to the world by ESPN in 1995, the Summer X Games is celebrating its fifth birthday this summer. And thanks to ESPN/ESPN2 and ABC, television viewers will see almost 30 hours of coverage of the nine-day sports festival. The Games' three most hotly contested sports, in-line skating, bicycle stunt riding and skateboarding, all consist of both a women's and men's division, competing separately in Street events that test agility and Vert (short for vertical) events that rate creativity. Street events take place on flat land and require that the athletes negotiate through an urban obstical course made up of iron railings, ramps, and cement walls. The Vert events take place in the more traditional halfpipe, on which each up and down run ends with a gravity-defying acrobatic maneuver off the edge of the pipe's mouth.

Imagine jumping on your skateboard and flying down a hill at 70 miles per hour with no brakes. That's just another day at the office for Biker Sherlock - one of the world's top downhill skateboarders and street lugers. Biker has been doing extreme sports ever since he was born in 1966. He was actually riding a surf board when he popped out of his Mom! (Well, maybe not really...) Since then he's been riding skateboards, wakeboards, mountainboards , mountain bikes and just about anything else with a board or two wheels. It wasn't until 1995 that he first tried the sport that he's most well known for - street luge. Street luge is different from downhill skateboarding. Instead of standing, you lay down on the luge. It's also faster. You can get going up to 90 miles per hour. "At first, I thought it was for wussies. But I love anything that has to do with speed and this is just a really pure, Biker fun rush," says Biker. Eight months after his first street luge, Biker took the gold medal in the sport at the 1996 X-Games. Since then, Biker has won eight medals in street luge and downhill skateboarding at

She has a passion for speed and an eye for clothing design. She dresses in leather, but not to make a fashion statement. She wears it for protection while kicking asphalt at 60+ MPH on her street luge. What about the pink and white flames on those leathers? That just to lets the world know that, yes, there is a woman out there who refuses to be intimidated by macho competitors with names like Rat Sult and Biker Sherlock. In recent years, with the explosion in extreme sports attendance and viewership createdby national TV coverage of the X-Games and Gravity Games, events such as street luge have become a little more glamorous. Thanks to Pamela Zoolalian, her sport is becoming a bit more chic. "When I first started luging, the guys thought I was just this cute little thing out there goofing," recalls Pamela. "Then my status improved to "she is one wild chick"and bragging rights with fellow riders who view the back of her helmet slogan "Spanked By A Chick". Now that I¹ve been ranked as high as #10 in the world, and at one point held the sports speed record , my competitors know that I¹m a serious contender each time I race."

The Ultimate Ride
By Megan Pasche, 18 You are flying down a steep hill, lying two inches from the ground. The only thing separating you from the concrete is an aluminum board. Your feet rests on pegs, your back is flat on the board and your head is slightly elevated so you are able to see where you are going. You are reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h. The only equipment protecting you is a motorcycle helmet and a leather body suit. Welcome to the extreme world of street luging.
The concept is actually quite simple: up to six racers go head to head bumping and passing each other and the first one to cross the finish line claims victory. A street luge is operated by someone appropriately called the 'pilot'. Tom Mason, a professional street luger and stunt man, affectionately known as The Bad Boy of Street Luge, summed it up best when he said, "For a few seconds, I am truly flying like superman and feel like a speeding bullet."
It is unknown exactly how street luge originated, however, it began in the 70's. It evolved from skateboarding and has obviously been taken to a more extreme level. The first organized event is said to have taken place in 1978. Unfortunately, it ended in disaster when athletes and spectators were injured. It was not until 1995, that street luge was presented to a national audience at the X Games.

They looked for Marcus and the group but apparently they were not on the same train as they said they were. Regardless, they checked in at the tourist information office, got the keys to the cabin, and proceeded to go to their cabin. The cabin was simply gorgeous and cosy, being fully furnished with living room with 2 sofa beds, a cable TV with 15 channels, a kitchen complete with cooking utensils, dishware and cutlery, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, a bathroom with laundry machine, and a small bedroom with 2 bunkbeds. They then proceeded to make the apartment their territory by putting up the THP banner and the Malaysian flag. William didn't have a French flag though. After that they proceeded to assemble their luges in order to get some practice. Unfortunately it was starting to rain.

Story by Daniel Squier - The Times-Standard Sunday, August 24, 2003 Eureka, California The search for speed. The quest for the next adrenaline rush, yearning for a new adventure, a chance to push personal and physical limits to the edge, and then ride that edge in a blissful whirl of excitement. This is what drives some men and women into what are commonly called "extreme sports." We have seen them showcased on ESPN's "Xgames." Twenty-somethings using their
skateboards, motorcycles, street luges, bicycles and speedboats to perform what normally amount
to extremely dangerous maneuvers. To the newest generation of thrill-seeking sportsmen, those
moves have morphed into a passion for finding the next mind-boggling challenge. Those of us who choose more sedate pastimes, such as sitting back with a cold beverage on a Sunday morning watching large men smash into one another on a football field, or calmly reclining in the bleachers of a local ballpark observing the timelessness of a baseball game, watch these young daredevils with a certain amount of awe mixed with a healthy dose of "You fools are out of your minds." Who chases this thrill? Who, when they wake up on a beautiful, sunny summer morning, look in the mirror and say to themselves, "I think today is the perfect day to lay down on a piece of wood riding on skateboard wheels and go ripping down a hill at speeds approaching 55 mph?"

By Dara Chadwick There comes a time in the life of any rational adult where one must ask him- or herself a fundamental question - is there enough money in the world to make me slide down a steep hill (including a 90-degree turn) at a speed of more than 70 m.p.h. on an 8-foot-long aluminum sled only an inch off the ground with only the soles of my feet to stop me? Apparently, for the 32 "pilots" who took part in the Dual Downhill Street Luge competition of the 1996 ESPN X Games Monday June 24, $30,000 - and the sheer thrill of hurtling down the half-mile College Hill course in approximately 60 seconds - is enough. Many of the spectators lining the course during the noon hour, however, had their doubts. Not one of a group of four Brown University employees who came out to watch the luge competition during their lunch break said they would try it. "It looks dangerous," said Sandy Monty, an administrative assistant for Phi Beta Kappa. "There's a lot of risk factor involved." But it's the risk factor that drives many of the athletes who compete in these games - they don't call the seven X Games sports "extreme" for nothing. Street luge racing, which is quite similar to Olympic-style ice luge competition, evolved from skateboarding, when the first lugers decided to sit down on their skateboards sometime during the mid-1970s. Today, there are both amateur and professional street luge racers, and the sport is regulated by the Road Racers Association for International Luge (RAIL).
