Streetluge a.k.a. roadluge, landluge... Gravity powered excitement... Streetluging has become a popular alternative sport after years as a renegade non-sport thrill. As long as there have been skateboards, daredevil speed seekers would lie down on their rides and bomb the steeps. From those ground breaking high speed Signal Hill runs of the 1970s to the dozens of professional Gravity Sport races held worldwide today, streetluging has a place in sports history and is here to stay. Streetluging is often featured in movies and TV, streetluge pilots are treated like celebtrities and there are even toys featuring streetluge vehicles and actual pilots in miniature. As a result, more people want to experience the thrill of the streetluge for themselves or perhaps even build their own "sled". The streetluge is a long vehicle (up to 8.5 feet long!) meant to be operated in a laid back position. Riding on craft built up on skateboard style wheels and trucks, pilots clad in motorcycle helmets and full leather suits are rarely more than two inches from the asphalt. The low profile streetluge design allows for speeds as high as 80 mph, however, this sport is still exhilarating and fun at 25 mph! Search Street Luge Table of Contents History Other Resources History Street luge began with skateboarders racing one another downhill while sitting on their boards. It was called "buttboarding" or, sometimes, "land luge," "road luge" or simply "downhill skateboarding." The name "street luge" was apparently coined for the X Games The first formal race was staged in 1980 down Signal Hill on the Glendora Mountain Road in Southern California. There were a lot of crashes, injuring both competitors and spectators, and the California Highway Patrol gave tickets to many of the racers. Within a short time, Los Angeles and other cities passed ordinances banning skateboards from any hill with a grade steeper than 3 percent. A group of racers, led by Roger Hickey, then formed the Underground Racers Association, later the United Racers Association. The URA conducted 10 races a year for the next eight years before merging with the American Gravity Racing Organization (AGRO). URA races were often shown on local cable television and they were covered by Skateboarder magazine.
