In teaching English for specific purposes (ESP) to students in the business school at the university, one of the most common problems has been that of learning technical vocabulary. For example, a well-known term in business English is turnover, a word referring to the total value of the goods or services a company has sold during a particular period of time. However, this word also refers to a delicious small piece of pastry. This is an example of a vocabulary problem in language activities. Our objective has been to minimize these confusions by using visuals with written and spoken words, and to find effective ways of promoting learning and generating motivation. In this article I outline an activity that has helped our students learn by association and has allowed them to enjoy the activity as they do it. Stock market vocabulary activity University teachers often believe that learners may find a task childish if it involves using imagination, games, or drawings. However, we discovered that the more amusing the exercises, the better and more successful were the learning results. Since our preliminary goal has been to introduce students to the specific meanings of business vocabulary and to avoid confusions, we have used visual illustrations.

community diaries shop A Good Investment Teaching Kids How to Invest in the Stock Market By Doris Keeler Bethany Murphy, an 11-year-old in Mt. Laurel, N.J., is as comfortable around the stock market as most kids her age are around video games. She got her interest in the market from a fourth-grade school project two years ago when she entered the local newspaper's stock contest. "We chose five stocks, and the newspaper tracked them for us," says Bethany. Even after the contest was over, Bethany kept an eye on "her stocks" and eventually bought shares in one of the companies. For Bethany's parents, their daughter's investment venture is about more than just making money, it's about teaching her the value of money. Tom and Marie Murphy opened an account for her with Stein Roe Young Investor Fund, a custodial account geared toward teaching kids about investing. "I set out with the investment with the objective of her learning," says Tom Murphy. "Every quarter Stein Roe sends out a newsletter written where children can understand it." The newsletter includes investing terms, games and company profiles. It's information that has piqued Bethany's interest. Since her initial investment, Bethany has won an essay contest with the company, which added another $5,000 into her portfolio. Her dad says the money in Stein Roe will stay there for the next eight years and will help with his daughter's college costs.

The Role of Metacognition in Second Language Teaching and Learning
Neil J. Anderson, Brigham Young University
During a National Public Radio broadcast in the United States in March 1999, a sixth grader explained what she was learning from playing the Stock Market Game, an activity designed to help children become familiar with how the stock market functions. She said, "This game makes me think how to think" (Prakash, 1999). What this statement reveals is that this young learner was beginning to understand the real key to learning; she was engaged in metacognition. Metacognition can be defined simply as thinking about thinking. Learners who are metacognitively aware know what to do when they don't know what to do; that is, they have strategies for finding out or figuring out what they need to do. The use of metacognitive strategies ignites one's thinking and can lead to more profound learning and improved performance, especially among learners who are struggling. Understanding and controlling cognitive processes may be one of the most essential skills that classroom teachers can help second language learners develop. It is important that they teach their students metacognitive skills in addition to cognitive skills. Rather than focus students' attention solely on learning the language, second language teachers can help students learn to think about what happens during the language learning process, which will lead them to develop stronger learning skills.

World Wide Web Resources for Teaching and Learning Economics. ERIC Digest.
We live in an information-rich society, one in which, via various forms of technology, information on almost any topic can be obtained nearly instantaneously. The proliferation of such information technology has begun to make its way into the nation's schools in the form of, among other things, instructional resources such as videodiscs, CD-ROMs and other computer-driven materials, and the nearly ubiquitous World Wide Web (WWW). Indeed, in 1996, 64% of schools nationwide had WWW access (Coley et al., 1997).
INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS
Teachers who use the WWW as an instructional resource are interested in acquiring knowledge of economic concepts and principles (e.g., supply and demand, marginal cost, etc.) and in identifying instructional plans that might be used to teach these various economics concepts. The following WWW sites are excellent examples: * THE NATIONAL COUNCIL ON ECONOMIC EDUCATION (NCEE) WEBSITE
INFORMATIONAL RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS
When students use the WWW to acquire knowledge and gather information, they can "expand their understanding of important concepts and communicate these ideas more effectively" (Leu, et al. 1997, 14). Indeed, one of the most powerful aspects of the WWW is its ability to provide access to the most up-to-date information available. Carr (1994) indicated that the use of current information about economics found in newspapers and magazines could enhance all students' understanding and appreciation of economics. Several of the following student resource sites provide access to, in some cases, up-to-the minute economic information.
