This program contains one of education's hidden treasures.
WELCOME TO THE BEST PHONICS E-SEMINAR ON THE WEB Does any of this sound familiar?
"How do you spell faucet?" "What's this word?" "I don't get it." "I can't read this." "I don't want to do my homework.
I don't understand what to do. I can't
read the directions."
Would you like to be able to help
your child become an independent
reader without spending a fortune
on useless programs and
worthless gimmicks?
Are you willing to learn a few
simple phonetic principles?
"Yes" to these questions means that this phonics
e-seminar is a must for you. The information contained in this program,
some of education's best kept secrets, has been around for at least forty years. Very few teachers know about it. Certainly you parents have been kept totally in the dark. Whether you are a parent, an elementary school teacher, an ESL teacher, a tutor or an older brother or sister trying to help someone learn to read,
YOU NEED WHAT THIS PROGRAM HAS TO OFFER. LET ME TO TEACH YOU WHAT I LEARNED 40 YEARS AGO.

Posted by manda under News for Homeschool Lessons No Comments Scientists have long speculated that small moons, hidden among the many strands of the F-ring could be responsible for the odd structure of the region. The question is, are these clumps just disturbances in the ring structure caused by interactions with larger moons nearby such as Prometheus, or are they moons in their own right? Dirty Dustball
Posted by manda under News for Homeschool Lessons No Comments On 4 July, about 80 telescopes on Earth and in space trained their sights on Comet Tempel 1 when a 370-kilogram copper impactor was sent hurtling into its path. Just after the smash, a bright vapour plume spewed from the surface at about 5 kilometres per second, followed quickly by a stream of particles that spread into a cone.

NATIONAL WOMEN’S HISTORY PROJECT
From a Grassroots Organization into a National Institution
25 YEARS of Writing Women Back into History
In 1980, we were a group of women who noticed that women were absent from our texts. No more than 3% of the content was devoted to women.
Girls had few role models. Girls and boys and many adults assumed women did nothing important. This perception needed to be addressed.
We convinced Congress and the White House of the need for our nation to celebrate and recognize women’s role in history on an annual basis. As a result of our efforts, the week of March 8th (International Women’s Day) was officially designated as National Women’s History Week. In 1987, we led the successful campaign to have the entire month of March declared National Women’s History Month.
We mobilize and unify the national celebrations of Women's History Month in March each year by choosing an annual theme.

Interview with Philip Bigler
Philip Bigler teaches history and social studies at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Northern Virginia. He began teaching more than twenty years ago and has taught at a number of different high schools in the Washington metropolitan area. He also took a two-year break from his teaching to serve as historian for Arlington National Cemetery. That work led to his publication of two of his four books: Hostile Fire: The Life and Death of Lt. Sharon Ann Lane, and In Honored Glory: Arlington National Cemetery, the Final Post Washington Post
I. STARTING OUT
1. What drew you to history teaching? Were you, for example, drawn by the subject matter, by particular teachers, or something else? 3. Where did you go to college? Why did you like/dislike about the history classes you had in college? I went to James Madison University for a B.A. and M.Ed. (Secondary Education/History) and to the College of William and Mary for a M.A. The professors I had in college were truly outstanding and inspiring. We had a group of history majors who loved our subject and we all bonded over our classes. Usually, we went to the Student Center after class and talked about what we did that day. 4. When did you start teaching? What are the places you have taught?

“I have not seen a better program for many of our minority under-represented youth."
- Ramon C. Cortines, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education
Breakthrough Collaborative is a national non-profit that increases educational opportunity for high-potential, low-income middle school students and inspires outstanding college and high school students to pursue careers in education. Breakthrough boasts a proven ripple effect of positive results: 82% of Breakthrough student alumni are accepted to college preparatory programs and 72% of Breakthrough teachers, many of whom were Breakthrough students, go on to pursue professional careers in education. Drawn from the public school system, 89% of Breakthrough's students are students of color and 65% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch programs. English is a second language for 27% of our students, and most will be the first in their family to attend college.
Students commit to a minimum of two years of intensive six-week summer sessions and after-school programs in which they take classes in core academic subjects, and participate in elective courses ranging from astronomy to African-American literature. A tuition-free program, Breakthrough's classes are rigorous and small (a maximum 7:1 student to teacher ratio) and full participation is expected of every student.
