Prior to 1925:
Creation Science was the prevailing belief system before the rise of geology in the late 18th Century. The early European scientists, from Copernicus to Galileo to Newton believed (as did almost all Christians in their time) in a literal interpretation of the Bible's account of creation. Historians have made m any estimates for the date of creation , including 3761, 3928, 4004, and 4456 BCE. The most generally accepted date was by Bishop Ussher: 4004-OCT-22 BCE Belief in Usher's date continued among Christian scientists, until the early 18th century, when it became obvious to most researchers that geological processes were exceedingly slow, and must have been accomplished over incredibly long periods of time. A 6000 year old earth was not possible. As geologists promoted theories which indicated that the earth's age predated the Biblical creation story, opposition arose in many religious organizations. For example, Ellen G. White, an early prophet of the Seventh-day Adventists, reacted to the debate about the fossil record of past species by stating that they were deposited by the flood. Friction between science and theology increased when Darwin published The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection (1859) and The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex

Few things are more helpful in planning a course than seeing how others have laid out similar courses. Sharing syllabi is one of the most fruitful uses of the Web, and a number of Victorianists have made course plans available online for the benefit of both students and colleagues. If you would like to contribute a syllabus for posting here, either as a link to a website or as a text file, please contact the A variety of additional materials, many of which are especially suited for use by primary and secondary school teachers, can be found below under Other Teaching Resources . C.V. for a faculty member in the humanities
This candidate writes that, while he is interested in teaching at research institutions, he would also consider working at a small, liberal-arts college in the right setting. But his CV, he admits, "reveals an obvious research/publishing bent. Do you think this may hamper my chances with smaller schools that might be skeptical about my desire to stay there long-term?" This is a reasonable concern, and it's probably a good idea for this candidate to have two versions of the CV, one for research institutions and one for liberal-arts colleges. Many four-year colleges want to hire excellent teachers who are also fine researchers, so the presence of research is not a problem, but the absence of detail about teaching might be taken as a relative lack of interest. The corrective is easy, and we offer some suggestions in the footnotes.

Teaching with Historic Places is a program of the National Register of Historic Association for state and Local history, the National Park Foundation,
http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/twhp/about.htm
About TwHP
Who We Are and What We Do

Teaching with Historic Places (TwHP) is a program of the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places. Over the years TwHP has developed a variety of products and services. These include a series of lesson plans; guidance on using places to teach; information encouraging educators, historians, preservationists, site interpreters, and others to work together effectively; and professional development publications and training courses. Initially created in collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, TwHP grew out of a desire by both organizations to expand educational outreach. Coinciding with a widespread review of American education in the late 1980s, this interest led to consultation with a wide range of educators, resulting in the launch of the Teaching with Historic Places program in 1991. Why We Do It
Real historic places generate excitement and curiosity about the people who lived there and the events that occurred there. From ancient ruins, homes of presidents and poets, and battlefields that comprise national parks, to the main streets, factories, and farms listed in the National Register of Historic Places because they make a state or community special, places grab our attention. They offer experiences and information that help make the past real for anyone who visits or studies them. Rooted in this certainty, Teaching with Historic Places promotes places as effective tools for enlivening traditional classroom instruction.

United States Government: History and Organization History
One of the first precursors to the American Revolutionary War against British rule was the Declaration of Independence, 1776 , written by Thomas Jefferson and signed by representatives of the 13 British North American colonies. The Declaration declared the colonies independent and called for the liberty of the citizens of the United States. The war lasted from 1775–1783 and ended with the Treaty of Paris , where Great Britain recognized the independence of the United States. In 1789, George Washington was elected the first president of the United States of America. The Constitution of the United States of America, 1789 , outlines the fundamental powers the U.S. federal government and guarantees individual liberty for the citizens of the United States. Limiting the powers of the federal government, the Constitution empowers the states and citizens to govern themselves. The most significant limitations to government's power over the individual were added in 1791 in the Bill of Rights , the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. Included in the Bill of Rights is the freedom of speech and religion (I), the right to bear arms (II), the right to due process of the law (V) and the protection against cruel and unusual punishment (VIII). The Constitution has been

Brown opened and integrated the department even further. He concentrated particularly on creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm, excitement, and engagement by promoting increased interaction between faculty members and the hiring of a number of new faculty. Hard work was put into increasing undergraduate enrollment, which resulted in the creation of an undergraduate advisor position to manage the 200 students who flocked to the discipline. This lead to more on-campus recognition as more faculty were rewarded for both their teaching and research efforts. It was during this period that the NRC ranked the OSU Geography Department as one of the top five in the country.

Activities to Help Your Child Learn to Write Things to Know Pointers for Parents Activities to Do Acknowledgments
American children must be ready to learn from the first day of school. And of course, preparing children for school is a historic responsibility of parents.
Should you help your child with writing?
Yes, if you want your child to:
Do well in school
Enjoy self-expression
Become more self-reliant
You know how important writing will be to your child's life. It will be important from first-grade through college and throughout adulthood.
Writing is: Practical. Most of us make lists, jot down reminders, and write notes and instructions at least occasionally. Job-Related. Professional and white-collar workers write frequentlypreparing memos, letters, briefing papers, sales reports, articles, research reports, proposals, and the like. Most workers do "some" writing on the job. Stimulating.
