NATURAL RESOURCES COMMISSION POLICY 1042 - MICHIGAN RECREATIONAL LAND TRUST FUND Issued November 3, 1978 MICHIGAN RECREATIONAL LAND TRUST FUND Act 204, Public Acts of 1976, created a State Recreational Land Trust Fund to be funded by the sale of oil, gas, and mineral leases on certain State land, and from royalties accruing from the oil, gas, and mineral leases sold on certain State lands. Money from the fund is to be used to acquire lands for recreation purposes. The Act also created a Board of Trustees to determine which lands and rights in lands should be acquired with fund money. The Board submits a list of lands to the Legislature each year. This list is compiled in order of priority and is accompanied by a statement of the guidelines used in listing and assigning the priority of these proposed acquisitions. The Board consists of five members, including the Director of the Department of Natural Resources, the Chairman of the Natural Resources Commission, and three citizen members appointed by the Governor. One of these citizen members must be from a group representative of sportsmen's interests. Birds of Prey Campgrounds Fishing Hunting ... State Parks When it comes to nature Schuylkill County has every other county in the southeast region beat. We have over 31,000 acres of state game lands which include three state parks. We have several dams that offer great fishing as well as three lakes. When it comes to outdoor recreation we have to look no farther than our own backyard. State Parks Our most popular state parks are Locust Lake and Tuscarora State Park. There is another state park in Schuylkill County that is my favorite, Swatara State Park. I am very fond of Swatara growing up in an area that is now part of the park. Locust Lake State Park The park is two miles southwest of the PA Route 54 Interchange of I-81 or SR 1006 from Saint Clair to Mahonoy City. Locust Lake offers a variety of things to do biking, boating, camping, fishing, hunting, playgrounds and swimming. The lake is very good for trout and is stocked several times a year with brown and brook trout. The bass, pan fish and pickerel fishing isnt bad either. Boats are allowed and you may use electric motor. You can also rent a boat for a few hours or for the day at the boat concession stand. Concession stands are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There are 282 camping sites, some with electricity. Modern restrooms and a wash house which has showers are available. If you want to try hunting, there are designated areas equaling 1045 acres of land open to hunting. You can find white tailed deer, turkeys, rabbits, squirrels, grouse and ring necked pheasant in these woods. There is also a special regulation area for bow and arrow and flintlock muzzleloader hunting only.
