Celebrate our 100th Anniversary!
Biology at Boston University is a broadly-based department with faculty interested in biological problems at the molecular, organismal, and population levels. Thus we have a rare strength in addressing questions at all organizational levels of Biology and in ways that combine our knowledge in these areas. The Department has five graduate program areas: Ecology, Behavior and Evolution; Physiology, Endocrinology and Reproduction; Neurobiology; Cell and Molecular Biology; and Marine Biology. Each program area has unique strengths and suggested curricula. The Department offers both master's and doctoral degrees in Biology that emphasize independent research on the part of the student, and a nonresearch master's degree. Many Biology faculty participate in interdepartmental programs that offers graduate degrees in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry , and in Neuroscience The undergraduate program leading to the B.A. degree in Biology combines both a breadth of education and training in Biology and the opportunity to concentrate in one of these areas: Cell and Molecular Biology; Physiology, Endocrinology and Reproduction; Marine Biology; Neurobiology; or Ecology, Behavior and Evolution.

The Texas Education Agency has created a clearinghouse that provides information about school districts affected by Hurricane Rita. Check this site to learn which districts have closed or reopened. Transportation Support for Hurricane Evacuees
Transportation support will become a priority today and over the next few days as the State of Texas deals with moving evacuees from the hurricane shelter areas back to their home cities. This will be especially true for the elderly and mass care patients. The State Operations Center is encouraging local school districts to offer transportation assistance (buses and drivers, if available) to their respective Disaster District Center (DDC) to meet these prospective needs. A map of the State of Texas DDCs has been posted to the TEA website under the heading “Hurricane Information”. Government
Our department is strong, with ten talented and dedicated faculty. We all love to teach, and as teacher-scholars we bring cutting-edge scholarship into our courses. We support undergraduate research through the supervision of independent studies and honors theses, and we take academic advising very seriously. Finally, our faculty offer a great diversity in areas of expertise and pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning. Two Majors: Government and International Relations The Department of Government offers two majors. The Government major requires nine courses in Government, including at least one in each of the standard fields of political science: United States politics, comparative politics, international politics, and political theory. International Relations (IR) is an interdisciplinary major administered by the Government department. It requires six government courses (including at least one in each of three fields: international politics, foreign policy, and comparative politics); an economics course that focuses on international economics; a history course; two additional non-government courses; and a higher proficiency in a foreign language.

Our mission: The Kern County Sheriff's Department is committed to work in partnership with our community to enhance the safety, security, and quality of life for the residents and visitors of Kern County through professional public safety services. Formed in 1866, the Kern County Sheriff's Department is the oldest law enforcement agency in the county. The Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer in the county.
In addition to providing police services to the unincorporated portions of the county, the Sheriff has the responsibility for the jail system, providing bailiff and prisoner transportation service to the courts, search and rescue, coroner services, and civil process (serving lawsuit papers).
Usually a city has its own police department, however, several smaller cities, Tehachapi, Maricopa, McFarland and Wasco, contract with the department to provide police protection within their community.

Education
A s we mature we think about the teachers who have inspired us to reason, to question, and to create. Good teachers are as varied as the methods they use, but they have common characteristics. They are caring individuals, they want to make a difference in the lives of others, and they never stop learning themselves.
PHOTO: Anne Reeves '94 teaching at Morningside Elementary School
Meeting Licensure Requirements Because no college or university in Virginia offers a major in education, students seeking teacher licensure major in a liberal arts or sciences discipline and also take a sequence of education courses. When you graduate from Hollins, you'll be prepared to meet licensure requirements in Virginia and most other states. Hollins began the first graduate program in the Roanoke Valley to allow college graduates in the liberal arts to earn teaching licensure and a master of arts in teaching at the same time.
Students may seek endorsements in elementary education (prek-6), or in the following areas in secondary education: art (prek-12), biology (6-12), chemistry (6-12), computer science (6-12), English (6-12), French (prek-12), German (prek-12), Spanish (prek-12), Latin (prek-12), history and social sciences (6-12), mathematics (6-12), choral music (prek-12), and physics (6-12).
The Hollins Program Education courses emphasize content knowledge, principles of teaching and learning, and specific skills. Not only will you learn more about art, history, math, science, and other disciplines yourself, but you'll also learn how to present these subjects to children in ways that encourage their interest in learning.
