Taking Standardized Tests
Now is not the time to roll out of bed, throw on whatever's closest to you and make a mad dash to your testing lab. Standardized tests like the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and American College Testing (ACT) Assessment are important variables that can round out your college application or put you on shaky ground. Standardized tests are an important part of the admissions process at many colleges. These exams offer colleges a consistent measure of your academic potential against other students. So all other factors being equal, these tests are likely to heavily influence your chances of getting into a particular school. Your SAT and ACT scores need to be up to the standards of the university to which you're seeking admission. Some schools admit only those with the best scores and encourage students to take the test more than once. To ensure the highest possible score, it is very important to prepare for the tests. The Tests PSAT SAT 1 SAT II: Subject Tests ... Test Taking Tips The Tests There are several types of standardized tests. The two major tests used for college entrance exams are the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and the American College Testing (ACT) Assessment.

The Low-Down on College Admissions Tests
SAT this. ACT that. Throughout high school, you are repeatedly bombarded by teachers and guidance counselors telling you how important these tests are to the college admissions process. Well, your teachers and counselors are right; you have to take the SAT and/or the ACT in order to be accepted into college. So, since the SAT and ACT are so important to your future as a college student, here is some information that will help you better understand and prepare for these college admissions tests. SAT vs. ACT The SAT and ACT are standardized tests that allow colleges to see where you stand academically in relation to other students. The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) measures math and verbal aptitude. The highest composite score for this test is 1600. The ACT (American College Test) measures English, math, reading, and science reasoning. The highest composite score for this test is 36. Both tests can be taken as early as a student’s junior year of high school. The SAT assesses critical thinking and problem solving skills, while the ACT is more content-based. Since most colleges now accept both the SAT and ACT, this may be the deciding factor for you to choose between the two. You may even want to consider taking both tests at least once.

All applicants to Dartmouth, including those who apply from foreign countries, are required to take the following: Please Note: Students may submit scores from either the old SAT I or the new SAT I (with writing). Similarly, students may submit scores from either the regular ACT (if taken prior to February 2005) or from the ACT with writing (if taken in February 2005 or after).
  • Any two SAT II Subject Tests The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is strongly encouraged for foreign students for whom English is not the principal language of instruction and for non-native speakers of English. TOEFL is given at centers throughout the world and must be taken early enough so that the results are reported to Dartmouth by January of the year of intended entrance.
All testing must be completed by January of the senior year in high school. If standardized testing is repeated, the Admissions Committee only considers your highest scores. Information and test registration forms may be obtained from your high school guidance office or by writing to the College Board or the American College Testing Program. Dartmouth's College Board number is 3351, and the ACT code number is 2508.

What do I take? What should I take?
Every college or university to which you apply will require that you submit scores from one of two standardized tests, the ACT or the SAT. Most often the tests are taken during your junior year and may be retaken as frequently as you like through February of your senior year. They are given at national test centers (high schools/colleges in your area) on Saturday test dates. To assure that you can take the test on your preferred date(s), you must register by the registration deadline. When completing the registration form either on line (www.act.org or www.collegeboard.com ) or on paper, be sure to enter your high school's code number . This way your high school will receive your test results. Make certain the you enter your correct social security number, as well, thus fulfilling one requirement for TOPS . Also on the registration form you have the option to send your test results directly to three or four colleges. Once your registration has been processed, you will receive an admission ticket in the mail, which you must take with you on the day of the test. You must also bring proper identification (driver's license or school id). Please see the charts below for test dates and registration deadlines. If, after the late registration deadline, you decide that you want to take the ACT, SAT, and/or Subject Tests, you may be a "walk in" for the test. You must bring with you a completed registration form, the regular fee for the tests PLUS a $30.50 stand by fee, a completed registration form, and acceptable identification.

Early Action is more competitive than the Regular Decision process. To be admitted through Early Action, a student needs to be superior in curriculum, grades, test scores and extracurricular activities. For the last two years, 35 percent of the students deferred from Early Action to Regular Decision were eventually admitted. Students who apply through the Early Action process do not have an advantage over students who apply Regular Decision.
2. Regular Decision
Because Early Action is more competitive than Regular Decision, students who apply though Regular Decision are not at a disadvantage. For fall of 2003, 80 percent of our applicants were competitive and 61 percent were admitted.
There are six factors which will be used to evaluate applicants for admission to JMU. The order of importance for our decision process is: Program of Study Academic Achievement Standardized Test Scores Secondary School Report Form ...
