Richland District 1 sees decrease in dropout rate By Keita Alston Edited by Aubrey Fitzloff When Toni Kelly-Campbell, coordinator of social worker services for Richland School District 1, saw the district's 2002-2003 dropout report, she was happy with the results. "This is the first time in a long time that the statistics are below the state's average," Kelly-Campbell says. The state's high school dropout rate for 2002-03 has not yet been determined by the dropout report and will be announced in August says Aveene Coleman, education associate for Dropout Prevention and Attendance at the state Education Department. Every fall, Richland 1 provides nine middle schools and seven high schools in the district with a list of dropouts. Social workers then follow-up on those students to see if they've actually dropped out. The S.C. Education Department collects information in a report on the number of dropouts from the previous school year by Oct. 1 of the current school year. The purpose of the report is to show how many students have actually dropped out and to collect accurate data from each of the schools in the district.
