OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS Advanced Placement An AP course is a full-year, college-level learning experience that culminates in taking the College Board AP exam in May. Over 90 percent of colleges and universities give college credit or advanced placement to students whose AP grades are considered applicable. AP courses are challenging and stimulating, and compared to regular high school courses, they take more time, energy, independence, and commitment and have greater depth and scope. It is recommended that students enrolled in an AP course take the AP exam. They are 1 1/2 to 3 hours long. These exams contain both multiple-choice questions and free response questions that require essay writing and problem solving. Presently, Leavitt Area High School's Advanced Placement program offers AP Junior and Senior English, AP American History, AP Calculus, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and AP Computer Science. Prerequisites for these AP courses are listed in this Program of Studies under the description and course titles. Articulated Courses Leavitt Area High School and Central Maine Technical College are currently working to provide students, who will continue at CMTC, an opportunity not to duplicate courses already taken at LAHS.

Time Management You've been told numerous times to use a planner in order to stay organized. At the start of every new year, be it a new school year or as a New Year's resolution, you tell yourself "this year will be different, this year I will be organized". You may even have purchased a spiffy new planner/organizer/calendar. And then what? Most of us aren't effective end-users of these spiffy planners. A little preparation can make all the difference in the world. Students in school especially need a long term planner to keep up with class papers, projects and homework assignments all of which can have extended time frames. Assigned early in the term, these assignments are frequently forgotten until a day or two before they are due. Unless you have a planner. For students, the best planner/organizer is one that covers an entire term, either semester or quarter. Use one that is organized by weeks. Or you could make your own. Take a blank schedule (like one shown below) and schedule in all of your regular weekly activities. Include everything that is fixed for the term (classes, labs, rehearsals, practice, etc). Then make copies (one for each week in the term).Once you have the fixed activities scheduled you can place due dates for long term projects on the calendar and work backwards to schedule work time for each project. This visual aid also helps you "see" how to fit it all in. Or see what won't fit on certain busy weeks.

Tests and promotion: Graduation requirements New state requirements for earning a high school diploma have been phased in since 1996, with the shift from the old way to the new causing some confusion. In 2005 the New York State Board of Regents approved a score of 65 as the passing score on the state Regents' exams required for graduation. However, that too, is being phased in gradually and the year your child enters 9th grade will determine how many exams he needs to pass with a score of 65 and how many at 55 ( see chart below). Students in New York City need to earn 44 course credits in addition to the Regents' exams. Note New York State graduation requirements refer to units, each of which represents two New York City credits. Some specialized and alternative high schools have additional graduation requirements such as extra courses or completion of a portfolio. Talk to your child's guidance counselor to find out what is required. There are five types of diplomas: Regents diploma; Advanced Regents diploma; local diploma; an IEP, or special education diploma; and the GED, the General Educational Development diploma.
