    Stamp Collecting
Stamp collecting can be a most satisfying and educational hobby. But, given two stamps of the same issue, what makes one collectable and the other worthy only of pushing the mail to its destination? We'll look at those differences here by following one person's oddessy of collecting stamps from day one to three decades later. Along the way, I hope we'll all be fulfilled. Stamp collecting is a most satisfying hobby for me for two reason. First, because I am an historian and most stamps commemorate or represent some aspect of history. Second, because the artist in me can appreciate the often fine engravings and delicate colors of many stamps. I began collecting stamps as a young boy when my grandfather gave me a cigar box full of stamps he had soaked off of envelopes over the years. I thus began collecting used stamps and I just pasted them in a beginner's album I had gotten for Christmas. Gradually, in comparing my collection with those of other boys I knew, I learned that it was considered to be better to use stamp hinges to mount the stamps in the album. I didn't know why, but I bought some and discovered the stamps I had pasted in the album couldn't be removed to be hinged without ruining the stamps, the album, or both. I saved my allowance (25 cents a week) and bought a new, even larger album and started over. Somewhere along the line, I discovered that

It is one of the world's most popular hobbies , with estimates of the number of collectors ranging up to 20 million. Collecting is not the same as philately , which is the study of stamps. A philatelist often does, but need not, collect the objects of study, nor is it necessary to closely study what one collects. Many casual collectors enjoy accumulating stamps without worrying about the tiny details, but the creation of a large or comprehensive collection generally requires some philatelic knowledge. The stamps produced by these countries far exceed the postal needs of the countries. Some collectors, observing the generally rising prices of rare stamps, have taken to

How to Start a Stamp Collection
Stamp collecting, or "philately," is an interesting way to chronicle the history of the world. Here's how to begin your collection. Steps: Go to the post office and purchase new stamps. Take used stamps off your old mail. Note that it's sometimes more valuable to collect the entire envelope rather than stripping off the stamp because of a unique postmark date. Ask friends and family for their old stamps. Their saved envelopes also can be valuable. Purchase stamps from dealers, who are often listed in newspaper classifieds and offer stacks of assorted stamps. Order stamps through the mail or via Web sites, either by approval or by want list. "Approval" is when a dealer sends you assorted stamps and you choose which ones to keep. A "want list" is when a dealer checks his or her stock and quotes prices for specific stamps you want to collect. Bid at stamp auctions or philatelic exhibitions. Take the time to look through the merchandise and make educated deals.

Postage stamps are adhesive labels affixed to letters or parcels to indicate that a specified amount of postage has been prepaid for delivery. Stamps are usually issued by a government or an agency representing a government, such as a national post office. The collecting and study of postage stamps and related items such as postcards is known as philately , a word derived from Greek meaning, literally, “love of what is free of further tax.” Stamp collecting is one of the most popular hobbies in the world.

Collecting Rock Stamps Rock and Fossil Stamps of the United States The United States Post Office has not been a prolific producer of mineral specimen stamps compared to some other countries, but the eight that have been issued do US rockhounds proud. The United States has issued other stamps topical to the interests and subjects of the earth sciences, including stamps depicting US volcanoes and other mountains, the Grand Canyon, Old Faithful, prehistoric mammals and dinosaurs, and US silver and gold centennials, and others. Check out the topical catalog page for the United States , featuring thumbnail images with links to higher resolution, 300 dpi scans of each stamp. Mineral Stamps from Around the World Many other countries have issued gem, mineral, fossil, mining and other stamps with subjects appealing to rockhounds. The number of collectable stamps of interest issued by various countries numbers in the hundreds, if not thousands. Particularly notable are the extensive commemorative sets depicting mineral specimens and mining which have been issued over the years by a number of African governments, some of which have already been outlived by their stamps. Shown far left is a stibium (stibnite?) stamp, which was issued as one of a set of 6 mineral stamps of various denominations by Romania on October 28, 1985. Included in this set are a 50b quartz with calcite (Scott 3324), a 1l copper (3325), a 2l gypsum (3326), a 3l quartz (3327), the 41 stibnite that's shown (3328), and a 5l tetrahedrite.

TrackBack Print E-mail TalkBack Living along a remote stretch of Northern California's redwood coast, Oliver Seeler painstakingly tracks down stamps from around the world. But not just any stamps. He collects only those with images of bagpipes. Seeler, the 60-year-old chief of the Albion-Little River Volunteer Fire Department, came to his hobby through his work selling bagpipes and bagpipe music. Pursuing such a niche might once have required a trip to a collectors' convention, or a chance find at a shop or show. Now, he uses auction sites, catalogs and other Web resources to identify stamps that can augment his collection, which he showcases online. "The stamps are often difficult to find even after you have identified them," he said. "If you had to track them down by phone or by mail, it would just be prohibitive in terms of time and money."

    EDITOR'S NOTE:
I t is doubtful that Rowland Hill fully realized the consequences of an idea he first suggested in 1837 to Her Majesty's Government. He thought that postal rates were too high and the whole system far too cumbersome. In those days a letter was still just a sheet of paper folded over, addressed and sealed. Then the rate had to be determined according to the distance to be travelled as well as the weight before the letter could be postmarked and sent on its way. The economy of a rapidly industrializing Britain would benefit hugely from a greater ease in circulating the post. Out of Hill's suggestion emerged the deceptively simple concept of a printed paper label with its own adhesive to be sold by the government and valid for the postage of a single letter throughout the country. O n 6 May 1840, Britain issued the first "postage stamp," a one penny (1d.) denomination printed in black. It proudly bore the portrait of young Queen Victoria. Following soon after was the two penny (2d.) in blue. Gummed on the reverse, they could easily be affixed to letters, but first they had to be cut from their sheets, as they were issued without perforations. P ostage stamps proved to be immensely successful. Within a few years other countries imitated the British. The first United States postage stamps, a red brown 5 cent depicting Benjamin Franklin and a black 10 cent with George Washington, appeared in 1847. By 1849 twelve countries or colonies had issued a total of 181 different stamps. These early designs were mainly portraits of sovereigns or deceased heroes, coats of arms, or even just plain numerals.
